PS4 due before next Xbox - Report

Source claims the next PlayStation will ship ahead of Microsoft's future-generation console; PlayStation Vita to work as PS4 controller.

The PlayStation 4--believed to be called the Orbis--will ship before Microsoft's next-generation console, according to a mystery source speaking to VG247.

Gamers will have a PS4 before an Xbox 720, according to the source.
Gamers will have a PS4 before an Xbox 720, according to the source.

The site's tipster said the design ambitions for the PS4 were set "at least" two years ago, and Sony is "confident" that it will release the console ahead of Microsoft's next Xbox.

Release windows for forthcoming machines from Sony and Microsoft have yet to be announced, but a new report suggested the next PlayStation would ship as early as holiday 2013.

The site's source also notes that Sony has clued in select partners (Ubisoft was specifically called out) about the console, and these developers are "already working on it." This falls in line with previous scuttlebutt, which suggested certain studios were developing titles for next-gen Sony technology.

Additionally, the site has learned that parts of the PlayStation Vita's launch hardware were altered to make sure the PS4 and PS Vita could interact in a similar way to the Wii U and its tablet controller. PS4 games will be playable using the PS Vita controller's twin sticks and touch screen, according to the site.

As of press time, Sony had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

In January, a Sony executive said the company would be last to announce its next-generation technology. Thus far, of the three major console makers--Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony--only Nintendo has taken the wraps off its new tech. The Wii U is due for a worldwide release this holiday season.

Gamers aren't likely to learn anything official concerning the PS4 anytime soon, as Sony previously confirmed it has no plans to bring the system to this summer's Electronic Entertainment Expo, which runs June 5-7.

So, in other words... More rumors. The Vita as a controller would make sense though.

@ all of you who think Sony priced their console too high.

Did any one of you check the pricing of Blu-Ray players when the PlayStation 3 was released? The Blu-Ray players were priced from $300 to $500 (if I remember correctly) and they didn't play games. Full backwards compatibility, built in blue tooth and wi-fi were also reasons of the PS3's pricing. Perhaps Sony should have released a more dumbed down console to keep pricing lower, because if you add up the elements of the PlayStation 3 and compare it to those same elements on the 360, the PlayStation three actually ended up cheaper in price overall. The Xbox 360 had an HD DVD player (I feel sorry for those of you who actually bought it) for those of you who wanted an HD movie experience and the Wi-Fi card cost extra. The Wi-fi card sold for around $80 at launch, and the HD DVD player was $150. So take Microsoft's premium console with the 20 gig hard drive for $399, add $150, then another $80 and you have a comprable hd console that is on par with what the ps3 offers. The problem? Gambling on an HD DVD player that is now a failure of the past. So for $630.00 before taxes, you get a more expensive bundle with a equivalent to higher failure rate. Don't get me wrong, I have a 360, but saying that Sony priced their PlayStation too high at launch is ignorant considering your alternatives, which were priced just as high. Did I mention that Sony offered a $60 gig hard drive which was three times the space that Microsoft offered with their Xbox 360? Add those extra two 20 gigabyte attachment drives and now your price is soaring into around $900.00. Where does the Wii stand in all of this?? Well let's see, extra controller and numb chuck would cost you around $60-$70, no HD gaming, no Hard drive and no HD/DVD media player. Did I mention that the type of hard drive used in the PlayStation 3 was a simple Laptop Sata based drive which is EASY to replace and cheaper at that? Sony's console could have been cheaper yes, but in order for it to be cheaper, they would have had to gut out a lot of what made it expensive...and buying mine for $599.99, to this day, I still feel like it was a bargain.

Just like some guys said below me, the PS3 is the third best console in the US, cause Sony released it 1 year after the 360 release, and overpriced it to like 500/600$

<< LINK REMOVED >> The 60 gig console in its launch form was not overpriced. The fact that Sony bundled a bunch of "extras" inside the console is what made it expensive. Call it what you will, but Sony actually had Blu-Ray players that sold for just as much and to top it off it had built in Wi-Fi, Blue Tooth, and a 60 gigabyte hard drive. Also, if you bought one of the launch consoles, you had the option to install an external OS, (something that Sony took from us through firmware/os updates) which was pretty cool while it lasted...

I wonder how many ppl didn't buy a ps3, like me, b/c they never made a FF7 remake.... That's the title I was waiting for. I have a feeling the PS4 and the next xbox will look great on paper, just like the ps3 and xbox360, but real world results will not be anywhere close... I'll keep my pc thanks.

After this they will need more than just graphics to sell these things. most people won't even upgrade to next gen for the next 3 to 4 years after these consoles come out. They need something like vr head sets that we can also use on our 360 or ps3 and the new consoles. this was not the best gen at all I see a dark future for console gaming if they don't start making good software and stop this whole dlc parade. Used games hurt no one ask Mr Pac at gametrailers.

Sony will probably end up making the same mistakes they made with the PS3, But this will still probably be better than the next Microsoft console, even at launch.

@OldKye: And it works both ways... the Battlefield 3 "Unlock Everything" DLC is £27.50 on Live but £31.99 on the PSNetwork.

@OldKye: It's all generic though.. if you're daft enough to pay for map packs you deserve everything you get... like the character pack on Capcon's latest. The only reason Sony don't charge for online play is they know the service isn't up to Live's standards... if they thought they could get away with it they would, after all they have always tried to get as much from users as they could... £28 for a 2Mb PS2 memory card put the £60 Microsoft 20Gb hard drive into perspective.

@ YukoAsho I agree. I don't play nearly as many video games these days since this generation's games haven't been as "magical" for me as they were previous gen. I always wondered why Nintendo fans couldn't let go of NES / Super Nintendo days but now I feel the same towards PS2 :-/

The PS3 is number 3 in the US because they released third and because they priced it too high. Obviously this time they'll rectify those mistakes. The generals always base their plans on what happened in the last war.

@TTDog you realize my original comment was in agreement with yours(hence no angry thumbs down lol) your clearly out to pick fights and i gave you the online system as a whole costs more if that's not a example what is? lol(or COD map packs from way back were free on PSN and cost points on xbox you can look it up if you have that kind of free time i'll keep my post and list short but there are many more and i can't post screen shots which seems to be the what you need or everyone else is wrong lol) and anyone who feels they are right cause the other guy spelled something wrong has lost already hehe taken together who really failed?^^

@OldKye: So nothing specific... sure Live costs but you get a better service, no month long outage there... no losing personal details and not telling you about it on Live... I'm afraid you fail.

@TTDog first off I'm neither pro xbox or pro sony i own both and both have done many things wrong if it's not PSN being broke and rejecting my credit card so i can never buy anything it's xbox live needing me to call between the hours of 1pm and 2pm on Tuesday and give them my life history since i was three to get my card taken off so i can stop paying for things. second I'm dyslexic and your insensitive lol. third what doesn't cost more? can we start with idk xbox live? it's free on all other systems to play online but not on xbox map packs and freebies on psn costing money on xbox and if you pay for PlayStation plus(which is still cheaper than Xbox live even then) you get 25-50% off content that's full price on xbox and needs xbox live to play

I own a 360 and a PS3 and am very happy about that fact. I'd probably pick my PS3 over my Xbox if forced to choose because as much as Xbox fan boys may want to talk smack, Sony has a larger and overall, better stable of exclusives. Microsoft really only has Halo and debatably Gears of War (great gameplay, but the dude/bro aspect of it is pretty corny). That being said, Halo is REALLY awesome, so unless 343 jumps ship to sony (which will literally never happen), I'll always own both.

@Outer-Raven: The original Xbox never really stood a chance though did it. A new console in a PlayStation dominated market, releasing late (but packing more power/features as a result) and they screw up on the price front as well (later rectified with a drop and a giveaway for those who'd already paid... didn't see that happen when Sony released the massively over-priced PS3 in Europe) yet it still beat the Nintendo machine... with the PS2 we also saw how the worst hardware can sell most units, something the Wii has done this time around. With the 360 it launched in Europe a full 16 months before the PS3, Microsoft learnt from their mistakes (price, size, not having a controller the size of a telephone directory) and they'll learn more with the next one (ie... reliable hardware, something they copied off the PS2 last time around) and it's showing... Europe is not being dominated by Sony like last time, Sony still leads, but by a greatly reduced margin.

@Oldkye: Care to give us some examples of the content 360 owners have had to pay for that was free on other consoles? Nor are Microsoft the first to produce duff hardware... simply refer to all the trouble with DRE's on the PS2 that Sony had to be taken to court over before they admitted the fault... Microsoft owned up to their hardware problems and fixed them without the need for a lawsuit... You also need to check things out before posting... not all 360's have eaten or scratched disks... therefore it's NOT A FACT... if they all damaged disks then it would be a fact... but they don't... so it's not. Funny how all the "pro Sony" posts come with appalling spelling/grammar... must be the school holidays.

I would like to get both but the rumored restrictions are going to be the deciding factor if applied to the systems. Main concern for PS4 is that I do not want to use the Vita for a controller. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo stop trying to take away my controller and substitute it with touch and motion controls.

@DitchyJ it's true that in North America the dominant console is the Xbox360, but if you go to Europe in most countries PS3 is the most popular out of the three. Maybe it's because the Xbox came to Europe kinda late, or maybe it has nothing to do with it. But at least here in Portugal there's barely any Xbox360 players at all. Hell, even the Wii is more popular here!

Why are they rushing the new gen consoles? I say let them take their time and build something truly jaw-dropping awesomesauce. Better than just building a rushed PS4 that is actually just a PS3 with a couple extra features.

@TTDog yeah but MS has been shafting everyone from day one with the fact that their system eats disks and makes you pay for content free on other systems(with a mark up on the payed things) tell they break that business plan Sony is going to be able to get away with a lot more

@ditchy: PS3 mag bigs up Sony PS3 shocker... thankfully that sort of nonsense seems much less common in UK magazines these days... generally speaking I go along with the 360 winning in the US, more or less neck and neck in the UK where a lot of people took umbrage at the UK constantly getting shafted by Sony (delayed releases, much higher prices, features and models not even making it to the UK before being dropped) and the PS3 winning everywhere else. That said considering the huge global sales of the PS2 it must be disappointing for Sony that its taken this long to catch up let alone pass the 360. @Albaficas: Interesting way to submit your application for a job on the Sony Defence Force.

@ditchy - I would imagine you are thinking of US sales and exposure ... That is true, its clearly the winner in north america.... Overseas, however, ps3 is far more popular in certain countries, and overall has severely closed the gap, if not pulled ahead of MS in global sales... I have a subscription to British ps3 mags and they constantly talk about the global sales and report Sony as ahead or right there, which at first also gave me pause.... But on the article, I sure hope it's true, and they realize the benefit of a good launch, seeing as hat is practically the ONLY reason MS has had the success it's had this gen ... Price points and release dates.... If Sony DIDN'T have a new system ready to go when MS did, then I'd be worried.

@Albaficas Where is the proof that sony is outselling (link it please) the xbox. All i ever see is people buing xbox's, or xbox games. People jsut dont trust sony or its online interface, free doesnt mean better and that why they introduced PS+, to stop people going to xbox and give its hardcore members some sort of benifit. As for the topic: if it does release before xbox, i will get the PS4, i love consoles and games too much to be stubborn and wait for the new xbox lol...i want them all in the end (except the WII) :)

Okay, I get that you guys feed off of Kotaku's waste, but the hell is VG247? Since when did this site change from being the first to receive official comments from developers and system makers to relaying on "tipsters" gathered from random internet sites? I am REALLY tired of these rumors GameSpot instigates within the gaming industry with absolutely no proof or evidence in hand! I remember back when GameSpot used to get high page views because they get exclusive statements directly from the makers within the industry, now it comes to this... :(

Gamespot should lay off on these constant rumor reports. or at least put those kinds of articles on another segment separate from main stories. Sony Confirmed 7 times over that they won't even think about a console launch until 2014. Even if it is true and dev kits for the "Orbis" have already gone out, their marketing plan suggests competing with 720 and wii U a couple years longer considering the PS3 is fairly closest to being up to date with 2012 tech.

PS3 came and they been outselling the 360 ever since..... from 8.5mil they closed the gap to 2.0mil.....despite the RROD wich boosted 360 console even more. And the ps3 keeps outselling the 360...so plz do some research before talking You need to wake up...america is not the whole world.... Sony owns europe, asia, oceania sony will always sale in america well unlike microsoft in asia wich no matter how hard they trying they will NEVER do well there..better stop making consoles for there

To be honest I don't give this article a grain of salt. Sony have repeatedly, officially stated that they *want* to be the last group to release their next generation. They are building their marketing campaign around it. Why people keep believing these anonymous tipsters is beyond me.
