PS4 Games Will Play On PlayStation 5, Sony Says

And they'll run better.

Sony doesn't have the best history when it comes to backwards compatibility and allowing its community to play older titles on current generation hardware. The company has even dismissed backwards compatibility as an unused feature. However, Sony seems to have changed its tune in regards to its next generation console, presumably called PlayStation 5, as it includes backwards compatibility with PS4 games.

Mark Cerny, who was lead system architect for the PS4, says the next-generation PlayStation (which is still not technically named "PlayStation 5") uses a similar architecture to its predecessor, allowing for the feature. It will use physical discs as well, and Cerny expects some games to be released across both consoles.

Now Playing: Sony Talks PS5 Specs, Backwards Compatibility, 8K, And More - GS News Update

However, the PS4 games will run a bit faster on PS5, thanks to the inclusion of a solid-state drive (SSD). As an example, Cerny compared the load times for fast travel in Spider-Man. The PS4 Pro load took roughly 15 seconds, but the same sequence took less than one second on the PS5 dev kit. So if you upgrade your hardware, you'll probably have a nice smoother experience in some respects.

We still don't know exactly how far away the next-generation PlayStation might be. Last year the head of PlayStation, John Kodera, suggested the new system was still three years away. That would mean it's still two years away now, so either Sony is preparing a long ramp to launch or the timetable has been accelerated considerably.

The above article is not very accurate in backwards compatibility. IF you measure by one generation from the other Sony PS2 would be considered one of the first consoles to play its later generations games natively. Yes there were some of the earlier generation cartridge based consoles but those were more complicated as some were generational expansions, region upgrades, add ons, etc. A gameboy to gameboy color... ehh. Going from ps3 to ps4 was not architecturally compatible, while the ps5 is being built to extend what successes Sony has had with the 8th gen. But I am not someone who buys a brand new platform/console, with a focus of playing old games on systems I already have.

The risky and tunnel vision decision of Kaz Hirai to use the cell processor for the PS3 during 7th gen prevented any kind of backwards compatibility, not necessarily intended. At the time IBM, AMD, Steve Jobs, Sony, Toshiba were really contemplating which direction to take the CPU processor direction. Sony/Toshiba/IBM created a 'cell processor' architecture in USA for multi-tasks, moderate performance, power efficiency. Good stuff, and still used today.

Terribly hard to code for, expensive, didn't work with common western tools and even Asian developers were not fond of the cell processor architecture, made backwards compatibility hard for the PS2 games on ps3. Sony took the ps4 into a more mainstream architecture with easier tools, and western coding. One developer described it as the difference between diesel, gasoline, and hydrogen cars. Emulating the ps3 games generation would mean basically rebuilding the games from the ground up, it was not till late in the 7th gen before emulators and tools caught up enough to work well with the ps3.

I have no brand loyalty at all to consoles.. it is just a machine that plays the games I want to play, nothing more. Don't care about logos, kinect, ps live, nintendo's motion/tablet whatever. I just want games, great games made by developers who want to make the games that are burning in their hearts and that make us games go .... oh shit that is awesome. Publishers/ Console makers, accountants, are just obstacles that get in our way to those great games and what is needed to make that tv/screen play it. Whatever the 9th gen holds, see what console has the games you like playing the best and spend your money wisely...; no, spend it informed, because killing metal slimes for 150+hrs might not be the best use of my money, it sure is FUN though.

@Flyin3lvl: Well the first few PS3 SKUs played PS2 games, then they took it out because PS3 game adoption was going fast enough. I'm still sore I was too late to get one of those.

Are we really getting a next gen PS5, if it has the same architecture as the PS4 so that its backwards compatible? I like backwards compatibility but wouldn't it be better to do it via emulation (assuming the next gen architecture should be powerful enough to emulated it as if it were running on original hardware)? Just thinking out loud....

@rot05487: Well emulation is good when you need backwards compatibility on a completely different system. In here it sounds like they are upgrading you from, let’s say, Windows 7 to Windows 10. Both support almost all the same programs and use similar hardware.

@dagameplace: Yeah that's what I was going to say, it's not radical changes in hardware with completely proprietary processors anymore.

Every system from now on has to be backward compatible. If purchases are now mostly digital, your games need to be able to work with future versions of the system. Otherwise you have to rebuy the game over and over.

@Jag-T1000: I'm sure this was said when PS2 played PS1 games. It's not that simple with architecture changes. The way things are now is unlikely to last as current processors are nearing the ceiling of speed and power. Buying the game over and over is what they consider "a feature" not a bug.

@garbalen: Let's hope the upcoming PS and XBox consoles are the last ones that will be needed as we are nearing the limit of what human vision can handle. Going beyond 8K is a waste of time and effort. What is disturbing however is that some publishers still release games for the current and previous versions of the systems, like FIFA 19 (which is on PS3, PS4, X360 and X1), with one single purpose in mind of course: to make more money. They are encouraging and prolonging the "feature" by making some people, such as achievement hunters, buy the game over and over. Supporting this greedy practice by buying such games on PS3 and X360 new (or at full price) is shoveling coal into the fire.

@ChrisAnetkaC: These won't be good enough. You are still going to walk into a room and take 3 seconds to figure out it's a game (or CGI) and not live television. There are some games I've considered repurchasing for convenience, but generally I don't have time to play through my back catalog already, and usually pass. Besides, I'm not worried about the ones in my garage as much as having nearly all games tied to a couple services that decide if I can play what I bought 20 years from now, and whether they will even exist as a business that far.

Everyone saying this is the news they were waiting to hear. Not see, but hear. Yet, they haven't told us anything. What's so exciting about playing ps4 games on your ps5? If they went all the way back.. then yeah, get hype.

Maybe they don’t want to call it a PS5 because it looks too much like PSS and people will make stupid jokes about it.

What was the last code name from before the PS4 was release? The PS Orb? Looking forward to more details. My temporary abstinence from this gen of consoles seem less fun, but I have been saving a lot more money b/c of PC game deals.

Maybe if they were Microsoft. Now that's a company that would've done way better (and made things less confusing) if they'd just adopting a numbering system.

When they say PS4 games will run better, will it mean PS4 Pro better? Because that's a big deal. I was skipping the Pro because I was hoping the PS5 would do the same thing except now I get access to next gen as well.

@Barighm: Not better. Just loads a bit faster due to the SSD.

I doubt the PS5 will run PS4 games better or make them look better. That would require every developer to go and patch every game to include a PS5 performance profile. That's a lot of work that I doubt they will do.

What you can expect to see is games that use dynamic resolution will stay at the higher resolution and not dip (much). And if the game has an unlocked framerate as opposed to solid 30, then it will spend more time at 60 fps.

@eli150: PS5 will likely release 2020. I don't know how significant a jump it will be over PS4 Pro but it will be a very significant jump over old PS4 which will be 7 years old if PS5 releases in 2020. The faster I/O and included SSD will be a big leap over the existing HDD drive that PS4 Pro uses.

@eli150: I never got a PS4 Pro for the same reason as the OP, dismissed it completely as a joke as the only difference between the original (or slim) PS4 and PS4 Pro is the slightly better GPU. The PS5 will have a better CPU and GPU, plus probably more and better performing RAM than PS4's 8GB GDDR5. The difference will be a lot more visible than between PS4-PS4 Pro but you'll only see it in the next generation titles.

@eli150: I agree, that's why I never got the Pro and never will. It was Sony's quick patch to cover the 4K base without releasing a new-generation console which they were not ready to do back then. I forgot to give Mark Cerny the credit for his checkerboard rendering which was another thing PS4 Pro got over the base model. I don't like being deceived (and that's what it's doing to my eyes) but the fact is it's good. It will still be present and upgraded in the PS5. I don't plan on getting the PS5 anytime soon though as long as my PS4 slim still breathes. Then it will get replaced.

@Barighm: Yes, that could be, although there are rumors it could have GDDR6. But it will definitely have more than just 8GB. And there is no doubt they will again want to set a part of it aside for non-gaming use, like they started doing in PS4 Pro. This thing is not even gonna break a sweat on a 1080 display which is all I have right now.

@BassMan: That's not likely. It's a big ask to get every developer to go and patch their games.

Games with unlocked framerates will run smoother, and dynamic resolutions will stay higher. That's about all you can expect.

@BassMan: The Pro 4 was capable of doing that, but then they would patch in the 4K stuff and that would knock the FPS down in favour of resolution. And you'd have no choice in the matter.
