PS4 Halts Full Game Download Sales At Physical Retailers

Go straight to the source.

42 Comments

Sony has confirmed that it will cease selling game digital download codes through brick-and-mortar retailers. The new policy went into effect on April 1, but you'll still be able to purchase digital games without putting your credit card info into Sony's PlayStation Network storefront.

"We can confirm that as of April 1, 2019, Sony Interactive Entertainment will no longer offer full games through SIE's Global Digital at Retail program," a PlayStation spokesperson told The Verge. "This decision was made in order to continue to align key businesses globally. To support full games and premium editions, SIE will introduce increased denominations at select retailers. DLC, add-ons, virtual currency, and season passes will still be available."

Now Playing: Marvel's Iron Man VR, No Man's Sky VR, And More In PlayStation's First State of Play - GS News Update

You can still purchase digital currency through retailers, as well as add-ons to other games, but not download codes for the games themselves. The company has not detailed what new denominations of currency will be available, or where. Still, this will make it more difficult to gift digital game purchases to friends, since that option does not currently exist on PlayStation Network.

The word of the change in policy first circulated from the Wario64 account, which noted a policy memo given to retailers. The change also impacts some existing pre-orders for upcoming games like Mortal Kombat 11 or Days Gone, as the memo says there will be a one-week period after release to buy a download code in the store. It seems as if retailers themselves will be responsible for helping transition to the physical copies for games that will no longer have a digital option.

The move would appear especially risky for GameStop, as both new and pre-owned sales have been hurt by the rise of digital downloads across all platforms. The company has recently attempted a pivot towards pop culture collectibles. It recently began looking for a buyer, but stopped the effort without finding a buyer. Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter suggested at the time that rumors of disc-less consoles and streaming services could have a severe impact on GameStop's business.

Sony recently announced a spate of new games during its debut State of Play stream, and if you're looking something to buy right now, be sure to check out the best current deals on the PlayStation Store.

I hope it doesn't come to it, but if buying digital becomes the only option in gaming, these console developers are going to have to increase their storage capacity.

The day consoles go digital only is the day consoles die completely. Physical media is the biggest advantage that consoles have over PC and when that is gone, I see a vast majority of gamers switching to PC as their platform of choice

@samurai1: But console gamers just don't play on consoles because of physical media. I think that reason ranks pretty low on the scale. It's more about ease of use, accessibility, and the exclusive games.

I think what would more likely happen is the majority of players will just fall in line because there's a majority of casuals. They may not be happy about it, buy they'll do it. Then you'll have people that completely stop gaming (like myself), and some that switch to PC, like you said.

I only buy digital if it is super cheap or not available physically, however with so many limited game publishers out there now, eg Limited Run. I just wait till the game is made physical.

People should always have options. They should be able to buy digital or physical, there should always be an option for both.

Some people just prefer physical copies and I'd be one of them. The reason GameStop are doing bad is because the majority of games they sell are overpriced. It's not because people are "moving to digital". That's a load of lies. Gamers want options, they don't want a digital only future. Anyone who says they do can go and f off.

They're completely wrong. It's all about having options and letting people do what they want to do. If a company tries to force something on people then they will be damaged as a company. Remember the Xbox one always online idea, see the damage that did to them and Don Mattrick that tosser. It damaged their reputation and gamers didn't forget.

Doesn't really matter, a heavy part of costumers including myself only buy physical copies, and will never go only digital. Only digital consoles will never happen as a standard, they will be optional.

@Tidus1012: hope you can sustain that. In PC we don't have something nice to put in the shelve since 2004.

I pay digital? yes, but in discounts and sales even for worthy products. 59.99 for a digital game you don't really own is (almost) unnaceptable.

@santinegrete: What year did, Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King come out or Cataclysm, or Diablo 3, or Starcraft 2, or Tera, or The Secret World, or Watch Dogs, or FFXIV, or Battlefield 3, or Portal 2, or Empire Total War. etc etc etc. I've got those sitting on my shelf right now at this moment and I'm pretty darn sure those came out after 2004. So clearly you are blowing a lot of smoke up someone's backside with your "In PC we don't ahve something nice to put in the shelve since 2004."

@Decoy77: ok, I'm going to put it like this so you can follow: does any of those game have some kind of online DRM? because if they do, the box and disk are pretty useless when validated. Don't you miss the times when you could keep those things for the actual purpose of reinstalling them? Now they're tied to an account.

Please follow up that line, the one citing that since online activation being essential to play your game, the beloved boxes and dvds/cds turn into trash as soon as the cd key is used, hence leaving a shelves, real wood or metal shelves, are empty.

Edit: my bad, F.E.A.R. came in 2005 and was retail was DRM free. Next to my retail Half Life 2 that doesn't work anymore for obvious reasons, but game is too good and anything from it is a piece of gaming history.

I never got buying digital games at a brick and mortar store. You go to a physical store to buy physical games. If I wanted a digital game, I could get said game without leaving my couch. Why would I drive to Gamestop to buy something I could get at home?

@thomaswmak: I suppose. Someone must.

I'm just as confused as to why people buy digital codes from someplace like Amazon. "I'm going to go click on a screen so that I can get a code I will then enter on another screen." Just seems redundant. But, again, people must do it.

Guys, I have a few questions:

If my steam account gets banned, and I bought a digital game, will I loose access to those games just like in PSN?

Does steam allow digital game sharing?

Does steam allow digital game gifting?

Lastly, does steam sell physical copies of games?

Thanks.

@joey2010: Typically no, in the cases of account bans your account would usually be locked out of all social features and from buying any further games but games already bought would still be available. Unless you commit some kind of fraud or other major offence against Valve/Steam then account bans are unlikely. Social bans, trading bans, game & VAC (anti-cheat) bans are the more typical kind of bans for offences.

Steam allows digital game sharing but their implementation of it is awful. You can share your library but only one game from a library can be played at any one time, so if you're playing one game nobody else can play any games from your library.

Steam does have gifting yes and is fine as long as the recipient is in the same region as you. However should they live in a different region you'll likely be unable to gift them.

Steam does not sell physical copies of games it is a digital store.

No thanks, I don't fancy spend £70 on a digital game when I can get it for £35 physical and then resell when I've completed it.

I've seen people that own a digital game, with tons of add-ons and dlc, get banned and lose access to the entire game and all purchased dlc. Why would anyone want a full digital atmosphere when it can be stripped away from you? At least if you own the physical copy you can play it offline.

@Vodoo:

There’s also a biggest problem here: lack of competition.

I always buy physical copies where possible and they are always cheaper than the digital version due to companies like JB HiFi selling games pretty much at cost price. Once physical copies are gone you’ll have a “choice” of one retailer only: PlayStation store.

@joey2010: Blu Ray was supposed to be the last physical format yet 4k Ultra Blu Rays just came out. I think too many of us don't want digital only. I know I'll be passing on the PS5 or 6 if it's digital only.

@joey2010:

Possibly less than that. They have been talking about digital-only games consoles for at least the last 2 generations of console hardware. The market is not quite ready because of slow internet in some of Sony’s key markets.

It must be a very attractive option for Sony: no more expensive manufacturing and distributing physical media, no more sharing profits with retailers. They have built huge market and now they’re going to make it an absolute monopoly: if you want a PlayStation game you need to buy it from Sony at a price they set. No competition or price matching. No second hand games market. No manufacturing or distribution costs.

@el_swanno: It's an attractive option for everyone that makes games, including the publishers/developers, as there's one less piece of the pie to dole out. That said, the intense backlash against MS when the X1, which hadn't even been released yet, had no disc drive (where you at, Adam Orth?) isn't all that far in the past. Sony, MS and Nintendo know that gamers want nothing to do with the digital only future. We ain't gonna "deal with it."

Cuz man, if they thought we would deal with it, everyone would have gone digital years and years ago.

@olddadgamer: I was just going to bring up the XB1 backlash, but over the course of this generation gamers have been buying digital copies more and more. Like someone else said, they've been conditioning people to be more accepting of it just how people are somehow "ok" with buying an unfinished game at launch. These "Live Service" games are basically an all-digital game even if you have the disc because you can't play it offline.

For sure but it hasn’t stopped them from trying to condition gamers to accept the idea.

In an ideal world the developers would get a bigger piece of that pie but a digital only model is really only there to serve the publishers.

@shadowwarrior4: The first day of the next month after announcing a new policy is a standard day to put it into effect.

It's also the first day of the next fiscal quarter, which would simplify bookkeeping.
