PS4 Morpheus Core Hardware Has Been Finalized, Says Sony

SCE Worldwide Studios President says that there are currently no plans to release a wireless version.

The core hardware behind the PlayStation 4's virtual reality headset Project Morpheus has been finalised, Sony has confirmed in an interview with GameSpot. Speaking at the Game Developers Conference, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida described the Morpheus' core hardware as "pretty much done," although "lots of tweaks and improvements" still have to be made for both the hardware and software leading up to launch.

Yoshida also confirmed that there are no plans to release a wireless version of the Morpheus, saying that sending 1080p experiences at 120Hz to the headset required a data transfer speed that only a wired connection can provide.

Thus far all experiences Sony has showcased on the Morpheus have been comprised of standalone demos. According to Yoshida, many of Sony's studios are working on actual games for VR, some of which will "probably" be shown at this year's E3 alongside more developed demos.

"It's so easy to create bad experiences that make people sick."

On the subject of hurdles which Sony has encountered in regards to VR, Yoshida said that trying to convince larger publishers to take an interest has been a challenge. "Large publishers tend to wait until there's enough of an install base," he explained. Yoshida also listed making comfortable VR experiences that are enjoyable as a challenge, saying "It's so easy to create bad experiences that make people sick." This comes as no surprise, given that Yoshida himself revealed at GDC last year that experiments with Driveclub had made him feel motion sickness.

The Morpheus will launch in the first half of 2016. GameSpot will be getting hands-on with the latest version of Morpheus at GDC. Stay tuned to the hub for our impressions of the hardware.

Well most of the people hating the product before it even is on the market simply have absolutely no idea what they are talking about, cause they never experienced the matter themselves. This has absolutely nothing to do with 3D (which is basically good but was destroyed by James Cameron himself) it´s AWESOME but hard to describe.

Also they do not seem to have the slightest idea about SONY´s product lines. Forgot they own also a handy department? So you already get a good idea of VR with the Samsung Note 4 and Gear VR. If a handy alone is able to do so, the combined power of the PS4 AND a small box with hardware should not to be able to?

Also Project Cars and EVE V. are proof enough for me (already played Eve on the first Morpheus and it was already AWESOME) so these are no AAA titles?

Furthermore the advantages of a close environment are obvious and make it a lot easier for devs to get good results. I don´t want to buy a 1500€ PC and the OR just to find out that 3-6 months later an improved version of OR is out and so on. In the PS4 life circle I bet there will be 4-6 “newer versions” of OR in between. And don´t tell me the games are cheaper afterwards, so the price difference will get even in time – tell me first where I could sell my PC game for a proper price then.

The Oculus is done and gone in my eyes anyway unless they change the product drastically. No 360° tracking, no walking around, bad specs and so on. The VIVE has definitely more chances to win the match. But I personally wish ALL Devs good luck with their products as THEY exchange their experiences and partly work together to improve the whole thing to make VR a better experience for ALL gamers – PC and console. THAT is something the fanboys could and should learn from.

I've been playing videogames since the early 90s, and I've seen many gimmicks come and go. Virtual reality is another gimmick that will do good at first and eventually die off. I don't know why developers seem to think there is a better way to play games besides a controller and a tv. For 40 years this method has proven to be the most effective way to play games. I wish they would have used the time and resources to create virtual reality towards making better games.

VR in consoles won't give your 1st-person views of AAA games, maybe with small indie games only. If it struggles reach 1080P at 60fps for a few games already, how can the PS4 handle 2 screens at 1080p with 60fps per eye? It cannot fall short of providing a stable 60 fps because that will cause major sickness to viewers.

As stated, Morpheus will be limited to small indie games.

Sony are focusing on bringing VR to the mainstream on the Ps4, and with over 20 million consoles ready for VR right now and closing in on 30 million by launch date in 2016 i think it¨s safe to say that Sony are in a very good position to get anywhere with the Morpheus on their own platform.

Here is something i found from the developers behind Project Cars btw >> Project Cars is taking its ultra-realism to the next level by working with PlayStation 4's newly announced Project Morpheus - Sony's virtual reality headset.

You already know that << LINK REMOVED >>, and if it can iron out the currently arcade-like physics, it has the potential to be the greatest racing game of all time. With Project Morpheus, gamers will be immersed even deeper into the beautiful world.

Sony has literally no competition because they have the whole console market for them self with 20 million consoles out there ready for VR and by the time the Morpheus will be released in 2016 it's probably 30 million consoles out there. I would be more worried about The oculus rift now that Valve are releasing their own VR headset this summer.

It's not a 120hz target, really. The frame instancing "reprojection" technique Sony is using gives them the cheat to get there, effectively doubling the image(s) out of the frame buffer. This is also about interpolating headset motion updates with frame updates mid-render. The difficult target nonetheless remains 1080p at a flawless 60 frame update or the integrity of VR crumbles. As others have mentioned, however, there's certainly a potential market for smaller and medium-sized Morpheus games that employ stylized visuals and cleverly-reduced complexity to achieve that performance, yet still manage to look great.

You say doubling the images, doesn't that mean 120fps from a 60fps game? Also i believe we will see bigger games as well, i really do believe we will see games like No man's sky, Silent Hills, Project cars as i have mentioned earlyer in this thread, and also you should look up Dying Light with Morpheus support, the developers behind Dying Light are mentioning they might support the morpheus and probably many other high demanding graphical games will in the future. Just my thoughts on that.

Sony and developers need to actually MAKE and Support games in order for this to work as Yoshida said. So far more or less every hardware addon Sony has done has been a huge flop, latest for me was the MOVE. Its an amazing concept but F all REAL games came out for it and no one supported it. I fear the same will be for this.

Oculus has a huge support behind it and it can be modded to work for games, ie Alien Isolation and modders are already planning to get GTA V on PC working with Oculus. I cant see this 'morpheus' doing things like that. Its going to take a s**t load of money to throw at developers to support this device to work with 3rd party games. As much as i like Sony they clearly are just jumping on the bandwagon from Oculus Rift and i really fear it will fail, HARD.

<< LINK REMOVED >> fair enough, but i still cant see many developers actually making unique games just for this / adding this to existing games, unless many MANY units are sold, unlike Oculus for PC. That saying, no point supporting / developing something with no market behind it.

yes VR goes beyond games, but 80% is focusing on gaming. i want it to be successful i really do, but on a closed system with no modding i just scares me compared to the Oculus which is basically on a open system with already a huge support from developers and independent devs etc.

Well tbh if VR ever gonna hit the mainstream consumers it wont happen because of the modding community or indie developers, you really need large gaming companys to back this with high quality games if it ever gonna hit mainstream and by seeing how Sony are really pushing this technology and investing a whole lot of money and resources into it i have no doubt in my mind that Sony are fully commited to make this happen with AAA developement studios probably in the making of VR games right now as we speak. Sony are allways quiet about stuff like this, and developers who works for Sony are not alowed to say a word about it untill Sony gives them the green light. It's all about marketing strategy and up untill now i think Sony has done a really good job. It's alot at stake here and Sony knows if VR ever gonna succeed for consoles and also for VR in general they need to make it right the first time and i predict we will see some mindblowing stuff at E3 this year coming from Sony, maybe games like God Of War VR, No Man's Sky with VR mode, The Last Guardian VR etc... They really need to make a huge impact on us as the consumers to make VR attractive and im allmost 100% sure this is what they are planning to do. We just have to wait and see. Sony are truthfully speaking the one company that are in the best position to make VR mainstream with over 20 million consoles out there ready for VR.

Here is something you all should read from a Oculus Rift PC guy at the Oculus forums named Cambomcfly.

"How slow do you guys think the PS4 is? Do you not think they knew about the Morpheus when they were designing this? 1080p is FINE. and i say this wishing we could get 4k and all that in the eyes but we CANT right now not unless you wanna run a 4000k PC set up and THEN buy a 900 dollar HMD. It's not gonna happen. With the right screen and tinkering 1080p PER eye is fine.

The PS4 is a STOUT machine. Play The Order. Nothing your PC can do right now will look as good moving as the order does on a 1080p 60fps screen. People arent being hyperbolas saying its the best looking game ever to be seen running.

W'e're not delusional about getting that quality gfx on a VR game. However the total power of the PS4 is behind just running the headset which we dont even know may have a hardware accelerator inside itself. Even if it didnt 1080p per eye OLED running 60fps with next gen gfx isnt something the PS4 isnt capable of.

You cant compare a console to a PC. The specs are different even if you recognize them theyre not working the same as if they were in a PC. The power is shifted around differently than a PC. None of us here work on consoles but the PS4 bashing is ridiculous. Play The Order is all I can tell you. We can achieve PS4 style graphics on Morpheus. Mark my words."

<< LINK REMOVED >> The Order is NOT 60fps. It's 30 (for that "cinematic" experience). And it's NOT 1080p; it's letterboxed 1920x800. Let's get all that straight first.

No, the PS4 isn't going to produce hi-fi visuals at 2x 1080p60, or 1080p90, nor especially 1080p120. However, that doesn't prevent games from having beautiful aesthetics. I would argue that "surrealistic" graphics are better than realistic graphics when it comes to VR. Visual styles like in Grow Home, Minecraft, Rime, or Okami can provide attractive easy-to-render graphics that aren't as taxing on the hardware, with the added benefit of surrealism to prevent any uncanny valley problems.

The first generation of games that come out for VR will be simplistic in visuals by necessity. And I'm fine with that.

There is a significant difference between Aiming for 1080p/60fps and achieving it. They still haven't achieved it yet, because they would have already stated to the public and too the press.

Also, what makes you think that the resolution and frame rate on the TV, will be the same as on the VR set, because it most likely won't. I can guarantee that there will be a big difference, because devs haven't even learned to wield the power of VR yet. Let's be honest. Coupling that with the fact that the game has been delayed more time that I can count of my fingers, with more bs excuses than I could think off, I don't see this as a feature which I would hold the publishers and developers on.

For your information, the games which have released so far are quite simplistic in visuals. The games produced in 6 years time will be far from that, and I don't think I need to promise you anything, because everyone will know how much better the console(s) will be down the line.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Let me break it down for you, ojmstr: Graphically stunning games on the PS4 don't run at 60fps, and rarely do they even run at full 1080p. There's a trade-off to be made with regards to graphic fidelity, resolution, and frame rate... and something's gotta give.

And then we talk about VR wherein 60fps is the absolute minimum you need. Not only that, but the resolution of the display itself is a pair of 1080p screens according Wikipedia, and the PS4 has to effectively render 1080p at 120fps at least. That's higher than any game on the PS4, and much, much higher than any "gorgeous" game on the PS4 like The Order which ran at a solid 30fps at sub-1080p.

I don't find it illogical to say that a developer choosing to make a VR game for Project Morpheus would choose to target 90fps at full resolution with simplistic graphics, than to target Project Cars style graphics at questionable framerates.

Therefore, building upon all the techniques and features we’ve pioneered in our previous games to simulate a sensation of speed, distance perception, changing focal points, and physically-accurate cockpit and helmet views, we’re proud to announce today that Project CARS will be supporting Project Morpheus giving players a totally fresh and exhilarating new perspective on what it feels like to sit in the cockpit of a high-performance machine screaming around a beautiful location.
