PS4 Report Card 2017

Good, but not great.

Following up on 2016 was always going to be difficult for Sony, but it was crucial that the platform holder maintain its momentum, especially with its competitors both launching new hardware. With the launch of the PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation VR behind it, its focus fell squarely on new games. But was that enough, and is the PS4 heading in the right direction? Let's look back at the year that was for Sony's console.

Exclusives Aplenty

Last year brought what was, at the time, arguably the best exclusive game of the generation so far. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End dragged the Uncharted series into the PS4 era, matured Nate and co. into fuller characters, and came very close to winning our Best Game of 2016 award. Just a year later, we had another new Uncharted game in The Lost Legacy, which ditched our intrepid adventurer and pushed two of the series' supporting characters into the spotlight. And although this expansion-turned-full-release perhaps didn't move the franchise forward as much as its progenitor, it did show that the Uncharted series can survive away from the Drake estate.

Sony's other big exclusive this year brought the return of Guerrilla, the Killzone developer that has for much of its life been criticized for making games that arguably look better than they play. Horizon Zero Dawn, however, at last harnessed the company's outstanding technical and graphical capabilities, and painted them on a distinguished underlying game. Let's hope this is a turning point for Guerrilla and it continues to defy expectations. With an outstanding, non-Killzone game finally under its belt and an owner in Sony known for encouraging development of unique first-party titles, the Dutch company could become the developer of exceptional games it should always have been, and we--the audience--will hopefully reap the rewards in years to come.

The remainder of PS4's exclusive lineup in 2017 was one of the most diverse third-party selections in recent memory. Nier: Automata, Nioh, Yakuza 0 (and Kiwami), Persona 5, and Hellblade (if we're counting console exclusives) were all niche, but superb examples of a platform broadening its appeal. That's in addition to a healthy collection of console-exclusive indie games, which expanded this year with games such as Matterfall, Pyre, and Nidhogg 2. Not only that, but Sony continues to aggressively tie up exclusive content for some of the biggest games around. Resident Evil 7's VR edition, early Call of Duty DLC, and exclusive Destiny 2 maps and gear often make PlayStation the obvious platform to play your games if you own multiple consoles.

All Sony needed was a big hitter for the end of the year to reinforce that PS4 really is "the best place to play." It's a shame, then, that the holiday period has been so disappointing for the platform: the only notable exclusive to launch in the most important season of the year was GT Sport. While by no means panned--it currently holds a 75 rating on Metacritic and earned an 8/10 in GameSpot's GT Sport review--the first PS4 Gran Turismo game launched with little fanfare, especially for a series which was once one of PlayStation's premiere titles. The smaller car roster, heavy-handed approach to online racing, and less-than-perfect reception might be the confirmation that Gran Turismo has been overtaken by Microsoft's more exuberant Forza series.

PSVR Is Under-Supported

GT Sport's lukewarm launch is doubly disappointing for Sony, as Polyphony's racer was billed to moonlight as PlayStation VR's big game for the end of the year. Unfortunately, the virtual reality platform is still awaiting the fabled "killer app." Between Resident Evil 7 in January and GT Sport in October, few big titles launched for PSVR, two promising PSVR games--The Inpatient and Bravo Team--were recently delayed to 2018, and the picture looks bare in 2018. Doom VFR and Skyrim VR help, but will ports of years-old games satisfy those who shelled out $400 / £350 / AU $550 for a then-seemingly groundbreaking new gizmo? More to the point, will they--in the absence of more big, high-profile titles--convince people who haven't yet invested to get out their wallets? This year has been a disappointing one for PSVR, which--if not supported better with landmark releases next year--is in danger of going the way of Kinect.

Nostalgia Is A Powerful Tool, But It Can Only Go So Far

In the gaps between big 2017's releases, especially during the arid summer months, Sony attempted to satisfy gamers with repackaged, repolished versions of older games. We received PS4 remasters of Patapon, LocoRoco, Parappa the Rapper, Wipeout, and the meme-spawning Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, in addition to the announcement of a Shadow of the Colossus remake, coming next year. Sony has realized that many PlayStation gamers--whether lapsed or loyal--who owned and loved that grey brick in the late '90s suddenly, in 2017, find themselves with disposable income, and they're an audience that is a ready-made nostalgia sponge. It was this susceptibility to childhood games being reborn that made the Crash Bandicoot remaster one of the best-selling games of the year, and it's surely a note Sony will play once again next year, especially with PSX just around the corner.

However, the company can only rely on nostalgia for so long. The original Xbox was only a few years behind the first PlayStation, so Microsoft's nostalgia push surely won't be far away--in fact, it might have already begun. For those already wearing green-tinted spectacles, Xbox is doing a more consumer-friendly job at harnessing the power of our childhood memories than Sony with its backwards compatibility program. PlayStation Now allows you to play PS3 games on your PS4, but you have to pay extra for the privilege, and it's no good at all if you have a dodgy internet connection or don't live in a handful of specific countries. Microsoft, on the other hand, allows hundreds of past games available to play for no extra cost on Xbox One, thereby expanding its game library and winning favor with its audience. It's time Sony started doing the same--properly.

If Sony's reluctance to make PS1, PS2, and PS3 games playable on PS4 is a potential sign of arrogance, then its refusal to allow cross-play with Xbox is a definite one. Microsoft wants cross-play to happen, but Sony says it's a "commercial discussion" as to why it won't allow it at present. It's an unfortunate, but understandable decision: in this generation, Sony is on top, so why would it throw its primary rival a lifeline?

Other Matters, In Brief

  • PS4's 5.0 update arrived this year, in case you'd forgotten. You'd be forgiven for not remembering, too, since so few meaningful changes came out of what was hoped to be a big update. Parental controls aside, the patch failed to address a concern that lingers more than a decade after PSN's launch: why can we still not change our usernames?
  • 2017 appeared to be the year the PS Vita finally died. The underappreciated handheld saw few new games this year, as Sony eventually threw in the towel with first-party support and publishers moved on to bigger and more powerful machines. Rest in peace, my little Spelunky machine.
  • E3 2017 was disappointing for Sony. The biggest game show of the year brought few genuinely exciting announcements (including, crucially, any update on The Last of Us: Part II).
  • Following North America last year, Europe and Australia saw their PS Plus prices increase in 2017, despite the output of monthly games showing little improvement in number, stature, or quality.

Verdict

Last year, the good ship PlayStation sailed into the distance as Sony launched an affordable virtual reality platform, a new, upgraded console, and some of this generation's finest games. In 2017, the company has by no means undone all that hard work, but it has perhaps allowed the ship to coast slightly too far. A continued lack of backwards compatibility and cross play, a PS Plus price increase in some territories, half-hearted PSVR support, and a mediocre E3 showing signify a platform holder that may be a little too comfortable in the lead, and it's a small, but worrying step towards Sony's arrogance we saw post-PS2.

That said, exclusives like Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy don't come along every week, and they exceed anything Microsoft has been able to muster in the past 12 months. So despite a number of stumbling blocks this year, Sony is--for now, at least--proving it's the games that matter.

The GoodThe Bad
  • A broad range of exclusive games, headlined by the impressive Horizon Zero Dawn and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.
  • Many third-party games still receive exclusive content on PS4.
  • Nostalgia-fueled games brought the PS1-era memories flooding back.
  • Lack of backwards compatibility and cross-play.
  • PS4 Pro's graphical capabilities have been surpassed by Xbox One X, which has stolen Sony's "most powerful console in the world" claim to fame.
  • PSVR has received few quality games.

Ive always known this site favours there beloved sony machine, and I'm not surprised with there summaries for the respected machines, but I have to say the way the reviewer has written both pieces is terrible journalism.

Take them rose tinted glasses of, the xbox x is a truly stunning piece of gaming hardware!.. its as if the reviewer finds it hard to compliment the machine. For example in the microsoft yearly review for every xbox mention there is sony mention, just to get the name out there as a way of distraction, its truly pathetic!..

Now in the sony yearly review ms is mentioned once!!... how much dollah are sony paying for this propaganda..?? and why mention the UI..? its a lot better than the rest..? really GS has stooped to a new and unfathomable level.

Gamespot continues its crusade against PSVR and it is starting to look really silly right now, after a year full of best VR experiences across all platforms and right after Sony announced slew of amazing looking VR titles, including likes of Firewall and Moss. Take cue from IGN and stop your resistance and enjoy something different for a change.

worst 2017 summary I have seen on any gaming site.
You have no clue what you're talking about.. disappointing year for PSVR?!? First full open world RPG in VR (ie: Skyrim) came out along with Resident Evil 7, along with Doom VFR along with Farpoint etc. etc..

Sir, you clearly are an idiot.

"PlayStation Now play PS3 & PS4 games....internet connection"

"Microsoft, on the other hand, allows hundreds of past games available to play for no extra cost on Xbox One"

Except you need the same internet connection just like PS Now to download the games on XB-O since you can't play them off disc....how's this point you are making even a thing Gamespot?

Gamespot ignored a dozen exclusives. Everybody’s Golf, FF12, Gravity Rush 2 And tons more.

They also ignored Farpoint for VR which was a “decent to good” shooter according to reviewers.

Sony killed it this year. And his complaints about Backwards Compatibility are a joke. It has been proven with multiple studies/surveys that only less than 1% of gamers use BC.

And when they do use it, they play the game for roughly 20 minutes before remembering why they stopped playing those old games. Gamers want new games which Sony provided.

PS Now is available and can play hundreds of PS3 games. If people want their nostalgia fix bad enough, they will spend the $20-$50 To buy a PS2/PS3 and whatever game.

Seriously, who is this writer in this article? U honestly suggest buying an Xbox all in part due to its backward compatibility program (all the while knowing no quality games are being released by Microsoft) and then u criticize Sony for nostalgia-filled games being its sole focus. So, despite that PS4 has the best games of the past, present & at this time, future titles, you still feel its noteworthy to even mention Xbox on PS4's 2017 Report Card, although Xbox wasnt in any way a factor for PS4 or Sony this year? And do you honestly think Sony would offer cross play for Microsoft? The only people who even want that are Microsoft players so Sony has absolutely nothing to gain from that. I dont blame Sony either cuz Microsoft is just as guilty of trickery & the type of dirty tricks that Sony usually gets accused of doing.

@Jimbowesker: His point about BC was that MS don't charge you if you fancy a bout of nostalgia while Sony are releasing remasters of PS3 games and charging you even if you own the original. They also charge to play non remastered PS3 games even if you own them beforehand.

I had to delete some completed games off my hard drive to make enough room for all the great titles I got from PSN on Black Friday, and it will likely take me all of 2018 to get through them. This is a golden age to be a gamer, and we owe that to not just Sony but the highly competitive market all of the Big 3 have fostered.

@Dav3vsth3World: Why is cross play an issue with those games? Are you finding the pool of PS players so low you can't find a game? With over 65+ Million PS4s in the wild, I really don't think Sony is "lagging" behind anyone. If adding crossplay really benefitted the company, sure, why not. But in this case, Sony doesn't need it. Microsoft has sold HALF of what Sony has sold, in terms of consoles, so sure, MS would love to bolster their online pool of players. But again, Sony doesn't need to do crossplayer and it's not hurting their players.

@Dav3vsth3World: MS isn't clean in this either, they do not have cross play in all of their play anywhere titles that are also on Steam. Thus fragmenting the PC user base. They chose their battles carefully to be impactful on Sony. Also they could have a crossplay title with Sony, FFXIV, but have not chosen to agree to let Square port it to the Xbox. Their commitment is minimal at best. More to poke at Sony then for the gamers.

@creation0:

That's such a load of crap. Backwards compatibility should be a requisite feature of any game platform. Having to leave behind all your games each time you buy a new console sucks. That's why I love the PC: all your games stay with you and they look and perform better with each major hardware upgrade.

The fact consoles don't have consistent backwards compatibility is extremely annoying. Microsoft is doing better in this regard and they should be commended, but even the Xbox One has limited backwards compatibility. Both Sony and Microsoft, but especially Sony, need to do better in this area.

@creation0: Old games are often from genres that are dead or near extinct now. Lootboxes, clans, chest-high walls.... games like Super Mario World and Final Fantasy VII offer something distinctly different.

Personally I've noticed that with a rotation of about 50 games, by the time I reach the last one I can go back to the first one and it feels almost like a new game. Plus retro gaming is a real thing, whenever they relaunch TMNT Arcade or something, it's an event.

This is the year that the PS4 finally arrived in my opinion! The PS4 started very slow with mostly remasters until Bloodborne was released (this is of course tied to my personal preference of games). Even then it took some time to really get going. 2015 had Bloodborne and the Witcher Wild Hunt, 2016 had Dark Souls 3, Uncharted 4, and Dishonored 2... that aren't many games over the course of 2 years. Then 2017 started and we got Nioh, Nier, RE7, Prey, Horizon, Hellblade, Death of The Outsider, Lost Legacy and the Evil Within 2. So there were more interesting game releases this year as in the last two years combined. Again my personal preference of course (i value gameplay over story, but i like games like the Witcher to fill the story void that games like Bloodborne leave). I wonder what 2018 will bring and if it can match 2017 in any way. So far i haven't heard of anything interesting, short of God of War, for the PS4 for next year.

Memorable Indie-Games for me during the PS4-era: Transistor, Don't Starve, Darkest Dungeon. Though i'm not sure about their release dates, i seldom buy indie games on day 1.

I don't give a damn about backwards compatibility and I reckon the cross-play thing is a trap. all I care about are games, especially exclusive experiences I can't have elsewhere. thus, the PS4 has been admirably fulfilling for me. I'm about to grab a Switch and then I'll have everything I need in terms of gaming needs.

@juninhotorres: Exactly, backwards compatible is completely pointless, a gimmick at best. If I wanted to play a PS3 game, I'd switch it on. Its sitting right beside the PS4 all it needs is a button press just like the PS4. I don't press that button or very, very rarely do.

I know others that have Xbox One's and they all say they don't use backwards compatible but they say its a nice feature to have! So, they have the feature but don't use it but then say its good to have it. I am conpuzzled.

@Salt_AU: Exactly. In the words of one Ned Stark: You don't simply sell your ps3. Although i gotta admit i barely touch it, even though i got 2 or 3 games to finish up. Mostly because it's really hard to go back to the Dualshock 3. That thing seems so cheap now. I still use the ps3 to listen to audio cds from time to time.

I think this has been one of the most impressive years in gaming ever. How much of that is ATTRIBUTED to PS is definitely up for debate, but PS has certainly been a big part of the red letter releases. On weak years, the "grade" for these platforms seems more relevant, but this year I don't think any gamer on any platform did anything short of "win" - everyone's got at least a few things to cheer about

Got the PSVR recently - this thing is quite incredible. You can't really get the impression of how it works by looking at web videos, the experience inside is much more impressive and thrilling than I would've thought.

It's true that most games aren't very long, except Doom, Resident Evil and Skyrim, but there are pretty brilliant games out there, and the pricing is like a third of a full priced AAA game, or even much less than that with discounts, so it's fair and I'm actually pretty happy with the selection of games so far.

MS- B-

Sony- B+

Nintendo- B

MS gets the lower grade barely but the X kept it away from getting a C from me, in my opinion. MS struggled software wise against Sony and Nintendo. However, their hardware is undeniably a beast. I just picked up an X. BC is good and free but I need some exclusives like Scalebound. MS didn't continue the momentum the 360 had. They got greedy and they paid for it. But they rebound. I suggest the S if you have a 1080p TV, the X if you have a 4K/HDR.

Sony gets a B+. It is the must own system for 3rd party exclusives, indies and JRPGs. Nier, Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, Tales of Berseria and many others came out this year. This is my go to console and their list of exclusives are great. The Pro is a deserving console in its on right which I own but the original PS4 will do. Get it if you have a 4K TV like the X. The BC is an issue. They charge where MS doesn't. Sony made up for the debacle in the PS3 charging $600 for it and the 360 took off. Plus Sony has a lineup in 2018 with Spiderman, Days Gone, God of War and many other exclusives in the pipeline. It is a good time to own a PS4.

Nintendo gets a B. The tragedy of the Wii U in which I owned. The Switch is a very capable system and I love it. Their exclusives once again carry their system. 3rd party has migrated to the system like Doom and Skyrim. The system lacks in power compared to Sony and MS but Nintendo makes up for it with great exclusives. The downside of the Switch is games like Xenoblade that suffers in handheld mode tremendously and none of the big boys are on the system. Yet, it's a great system to own and I am enjoying mine wholeheartedly.

Choose the system or systems for yourself. They all have their positives and negatives. I am fortunate that I can afford all 3 and the games I like. Not a fanboy I just call it how I see it and to me it's not necessary to upgrade to the mid gen consoles unless you have the TV and the money to do so.

@dhaynes25: I wish more gamers would have this notion. Imagine real conversations and opinions about games, instead of "fanboy this", "fanboy that" that fill half the comments on (not only) exclusive releases. We all like games, isn't that something that should connect instead of divide? Of course we are a competitive species (even more so, because 90% of all gamers are male) and of course Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo need to be competitive so we consumers get better products, but all that infantile BS you have to sift through on sites like these (or let me say the internet in general) is getting so annoying.

@RaveNRolla: I agree with you. This fan boyish attitude is not necessary. I like to see the 3 compete like you said to make their products better and get better exclusives

This was definitely a good year for PS4. Honestly, before Uncharted 4, there just wasn't a lot there that seemed extraordinary. This year alone has given them more notable exclusives than previous years combined. Great timing, too, because the Pro and PSVR last year seem disappointing and overpriced.

Thankfully for Sony and fans, they now have a handful of exclusive games as at least one actual argument, if paltry, against the incredible Xbox One X, which is really the place to play games. It has remarkable power for its price and size, 4k media, some of the best exclusives in the gaming industry, a top-notch controller and online platform, and most importantly, the best place to play the vast majority of great games on the market due to tremendous third party support combined with excellent hardware.

But still, this year has definitely been good for PS4. Horizon alone is a fantastic game. Kudos to the Killzone developers for releasing an excellent game.

I give ps4 an amazing rating of "A". Personally sony strategy is working for me, heavy hitter exclusives 1 half of the year and some great 3rd party games for the rest kept me on the system. More than switch which is new and have great games on it. Having some of the best japanese games this decade on the system does help the score. Really can't wait for persona 6(hopefully) and nier sequel! Oh can't wait for yakuza 6 and kiwami 2! Damn great year!

Boy, if this guy gives the PS4 an average grade, the heck would he give the Xbox One?

That trash barely has any AAA exclusives, and the cycle for this generation is almost over.

Twice as many PS4's are being sold, so I'm not sure what the average score is about.

@Gliave: It has Forza and... I think that's it as far as AAA exclusives.
