PS4 Ships 3.9M Units in Last Three Months, As Sony's Game Division Slides

Game sales increase, but not enough to offset the effect of exchange rates and PS4 price drops.

Sony today reported earnings for the three-month quarter ended September 30, announcing it shipped 3.9 million PlayStation 4 consoles during the July-September quarter.

That's down from 4 million PS4 consoles shipped during the same period last year. With the 3.9 million new consoles shipped, the PS4 has now shipped 47.4 million systems worldwide as of September 30. As announced previously, Sony expects to ship 20 million PS4 systems during its current fiscal year, bringing the console's lifetime shipment tally to 60 million by March 2017.

Sony's Game & Network Services division overall saw its sales slide 11.3 percent to ¥319.9 billion ($3.2 billion). The decrease, which Sony labeled as being "significant" was mainly attributed to a difficult foreign exchange rate and PS4 price drops. PS4 game sales partially offset the downturn, Sony said.

Operating income for Sony's Game & Network Services division fell to ¥14.9 billion ($188 million). Again, this decrease was attributed mainly to the PS4 price drops as well as lower PlayStation 3 sales. Partially offsetting the decrease were PS4 hardware cost reductions and the aforementioned increased game sales.

On a wider angle, Sony Corporation overall saw its sales for the quarter fall by 10.8 percent to ¥1.7 trillion yen ($16.7 billion), a downturn that it attributed "mainly" to the impact of foreign exchange rates. Operating income dropped as well, coming in at ¥45.7 billion ($453 million).

The next gaming product launch for Sony is the PlayStation 4 Pro, which goes on sale on November 10, priced at $400. GameSpot received a unit this week and we'll have lots more coverage in the days ahead.

Microsoft's Xbox One has been the best-selling console in the United States for three straight months, running July through September. October's numbers will come in later this month.

For more on how other gaming companies are doing from a business perspective, check out GameSpot's reports on the latest earnings below. Electronic Arts report earnings later today, November 1, while Sega, Take-Two, Activision, and Ubisoft are scheduled to do so later this week.

That tends to happen when you have a new console right around the corner. The only thing is that the XB1s seems to be bucking that trend even though the scorpio is on the horizon.

I'm guessing Sony is getting ready for Black Friday Christmas sales. I have no clue why so many people are buying nex gen when the games aren't very good. All I see is rehashes of older games and First Person Shooter blandness that has been done to death over the past 15 years. Personally I think it's still too soon to buy a nex gen console, but then again I am in my early 30s and am more than content playing my old school NES, SNES, n64, PS1, PS2, even PS3 Xbox 360 games. The market is just flooded with games right now and the modern games are more focused on graphics than gameplay. I want fun platforming, RPGs, racing, strategy, simulation, not bragging rights of the most superior graphics having 4K resolution.

@gameroutlawzzmjonk2pc Those games are good, but seriously you can't justify a purchase without a really good AAA title like Gran Turismo had on the PS2 or Halo on the Xbox. Maybe for some people who have $300-$400 to throw around or kids who always get what they want I say go ahead. I cannot justify a purchase over mediocre titles. Go back and look at how many great titles were released on previous game consoles within the first 2 years of its life. We're in the age of the best specs and graphics. I don't care how fast my console boots or loads a game. If the best games are from previous generations remastered and only available to be downloaded digitally why not invest the money in the original game system and game for considerably less money.

@burnedandfrozen: Bloodborne, dark souls 3, Fallout 4, Salt and Sanctuary etc. all brilliant games worth playing on the new systems.

@gameroutlawzz: Just the difference in speed with the PS4 makes me cringe when I turn on the PS3 in my bedroom. Can't wait to get my PS4 Pro and toss the PS3 to my kids.

It's worth noting that this year customers have been waiting on the slim and its $100 price cut as well as the PS4 Pro, so it's no wonder that the sales have lagged. The fact that they've only lagged by 100k units is surprising given the influence from those factors.

@jerjef: They wouldn't of shipped 3.9 mil is they hadn't just sold about the same amount. I doubt stores are stocking their shelves with ps4s right now since the pro will be out in a little over a week.

@joshrmeyer: Xmas is coming. Stores are logically stocking up just like they will with XB1S's. Doesn't mean they're all going to sell.

um.. Im not sure the writer understands those numbers if you think that is a bad thing, there is always a downward trend in console sales. Only thing to counter that would be a huge exclusive title, so going from 4 to 3.9 million is not bad at all.

@jpeters36: No, you're the one that doesn't understand the numbers. Their total earnings dropped 11.3%, which Sony called "significant". IF you're going to trash Eddie about an article, make sure you know what the f you're talking about, otherwise you come off as a moron.

@jpeters36: Taking it further, this year's sales lead to an 11% drop in revenue for various reasons. Sony labeled it as significant, even if the number of plastic boxes shipped is pretty much the same, the result of shipping those boxes is seeing a lower return on investment.

Also, the trend with console sales isn't a decline and shouldn't be. As game libraries increase and prices drop sales should increase.

Actually, I'm amazed they're shipping that many after having announced the Pro. You'd think people would be smart enough to just wait a couple months and get the better system.

@esqueejy: it's not just the console. You'd have to buy a 4k hdr capable TV set of you don't already own one in order to make full use of the ps pro. I don't think the ps pro is going to sell that much at first.

@chris120379: Almost every game I've seen has better "perks" running a game at 1080p 60fps, and downsampling for 1440 or 1800. 4k would be nice, but I'd much rather keep using my 1080p tv with a native 1080p 60fps until 4k tvs drop (the good tvs, not the crap at walmart).

@joshrmeyer: Check cnet.com for tv reviews man. Some of the best TVs out there in terms of performance are Vizio and LG at this point and you can get 4K at a surprisingly reasonable price if you intend to skip silly bells and whistles that most of us never use and don't intend to use if the primary purpose is going to be using it for games and cable tv (can you tell I've been doing my research hehe?). I mean, who bothers with all the smart tv crap on them at this point instead of using your PS4 for Netflix? And heck, even most cable companies at this point provide Netflix, Hulu, etc., applications. If you're basically looking for just a monitor on which to run your 4K stuff, let me put it this way: the Vizio's are on the best tv lists for picture quality, black levels, etc., and you can get a 70-incher for like $1600-$1800 (if that gives you any idea how much more reasonable the smaller ones are). If you want to make the jump to an OLED instead of just LED with local dimming, you'll pay out the arse, so just go with the LED.

@esqueejy: True, I'll need to do more research. My second tv was a Vizio and looked good for the price and time I bought it. Then spent 3x as much on a LG 55" and it was a huge improvement. I really like the oled tvs but yeah, they're expensive right now. I just noticed in the past that the models Walmart sells are the bottom of the line models for that particular brand. I've also heard that Vizio uses LG screens lol. So who knows. Either way, I'm still happy with my 1080p for now. Maybe the following black friday I'll be more interested in 4k.

@chris120379: I'd buy a pro even without a 4k TV, stabilised/improved FPS in games, a 900p game on a Pro and HD TV will also be improved and 4k TVs are always coming down in price, people may upgrade their TV shortly and then they would regret not having the Pro over the standard.

It's pretty remarkable, IMO, that a full year on, with the popular X1S out and the Pro on the horizon to dampen sales, that the PS4 only shipped ~100,000 fewer units over 4 months than it did last year. Of course the decrease in revenue is unfortunate for Sony, but on the consumer end it appears to be more-or-less as popular as it's always been, which is surprising.

@sellingthings: that's a bit of a silly thing to say, IMO - for one thing, clearly it does continue to sell (yes, I know these are "Shipped" not sold through numbers), regardless of how damning you think Evo Studios closing is. As for WHY it continues to sell? I can't say for certain, but it's certainly not true that it isn't getting games... I'm not sure why Sony closing down an underperforming studio that made one commercial (and critical) failure of a title for the PS4 means the PS4 has no games. For one thing: multiplats. Multiplats everywhere. Let's not kid ourselves: most of what people play on either the PS4 OR the X1 is multiplat. For another - indies and the other exclusives don't exist because sad ol' DriveClub bombed?

At the end of the day, it has numerically more games than the competition (despite the tricky pants phrasing in the latest XBox ad that hinges on the fastest network point).

Still, it's not really here nor there - my point isn't about the games or fanwars. It is about "wow, they continue to ship the same number of units to stores despite all this time and the competition?"

@sellingthings: yeah I hear you. I don't care about the hardware sales either, except from an academic standpoint - as long as the systems sell well enough that a) they get developer support, and b) the company can stay afloat, then for me it's just about the games as well
