PS4 Slim Out Now

The $300 system is 30 percent smaller than the previous model

Sony launches new hardware today, as the PlayStation 4 Slim has officially arrived at retailers.

The $300 system is 30 percent smaller and more energy efficient than the previous model, which is being replaced by the Slim. It sports a 500 GB hard drive and sells for €300 Euros and £260 in other markets.

One of the better bundles available now is the Uncharted 4: A Thief's End package, which comes with the system and a copy of the Naughty Dog game for $300. Go to Sony's website to see a full rundown of available packages.

The launch of the PS4 Slim comes more than a month after Microsoft released the slimmed-down Xbox One S, which also starts at $300. For more on these two consoles, check out GameSpot's comparison gallery.

Also launched this week was PS4's 4.00 update, which introduces some major changes to the look and feel of the system, while it also adds folders to help you organize content.

The PS4 Slim isn't the only system Sony will launch this year, as the PS4 Pro comes out in November. This $400 system is more powerful than the existing model and has a somewhat different design.

Welp, I don't have a PS4 (or a console at all these days), so I'll get this probably once both Horizon and the new Spider-Man are out. Those are the only console exclusives I'm interested in at the moment.

Yeah, upgrading from an OG PS4 for this would be silly. I mean it is not aesthetically pleasing and it's lacking an optical audio port. Unless you don't have a PS4...not sure how many people are left, this is a pass I think.

they need to reduce the old model pricing to around 250 dollars in my opinion. I would possibly buy it since I prefer that look anyways

EDIT: I was going to buy the PS4 Pro but honestly its just a Disappointment all around. So I think ill just get the PS4 slim ( or the original Model)

It's not the sexiest thing out there but it's functional. Amazon pushed the ship date out on mine to the 27th. I can't wait to replace my launch PS4 that sounds like a 747 and I certainly am not complaining about the faster wifi.

It's a good option if you don't already have a PS4. However, for an extra hundred bucks, you can get a top of the line console, so I don't know why you wouldn't just go for the Pro model.

With the PS4 priced at $300 I don't see the Xbox winning until the Scorpio. Maybe Gears 4 and Forza Horizon 3 will help who knows .

@freeryu: Honestly, no one really expects Xbox One or this called Scorpio will make a difference and since all Xbox One games are now playable on Windows 10, no point in seeing Xbox One reaching PS4 sales. But however, it'll still be a successful console in MS eyes and MS still have gamers who enjoys the console, no matter what.

@davillain-: Doesn't matter if the games are on PC. If I want powerful console and don't want to build a PC(like many gamers this gen) I'll just buy the Scorpio. The X1 still has a few exclusives btw.

@davillain-: But...but.. we don't know if the Scorpio will be as good as promised/hyped by M$ ! 6 Teraflops means bollocks if the games don't look good or run as well on the device. So I am not at all hyped by the Scorpio until I see a tech demonstration by M$ sometime in the near future.

@freeryu: If next gen is only going to be 6Tflops, it will be a sad gen. By the time PS5 is ready to go, in around 3 years, it better be pushing over 10 because Graphics cards will be way above it. Scorpio isn't supposed to be counted as a new gen though, all xbox one games are supposed to be compatible with all the machines. There aren't supposed to be any exclusives for the newer machines. Microsoft will probably break that though.

@mjonk2pc: Phil said it was part of the X1 family but people keep calling it next gen. As long as the game looks good idc how many teraflops these consoles are. The PS4 is 4.2 teraflops and PC gamers are laughing at it. I have yet to see a PC game look half as good as GoW 4 or Horizon Zero Dawn on PC.

If that is the case then it is an even more precarious situation. Sega did something similar with the Dreamcast. Marketed as next gen and far more powerful than anything at the time of release, but woefully underpowered by the time their competitors were ready to upgrade. And let's not forget that Sony will be riding on the success of the the PS4 by the time their next console comes around, much the same as they were with the PS1 moving to PS2.

Anyway, that's not the case. Microsoft have already said their business practice regarding the Scorpio will be very similar - if not the same - to Sony's with regards to the Pro.
