PS4 VR Headset to Be Priced "As a New Gaming Platform," Sony Boss Says

Plus, Sony says it will have more than 10 titles ready for launch in 2016.

Sony has revealed a rough price estimation for its upcoming PlayStation 4 virtual reality headset, the newly branded PlayStation VR. PlayStation president Andrew House tells Bloomberg in a new interview that the headset will be priced "as a new gaming platform," though he did not provide any specific figures.

If he's talking about a traditional home console like the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Wii U, House's comments would suggest PlayStation VR will cost around $300-$400 or thereabouts. Sony has previously said that it was aiming to go "as low as possibly can be done" for PlayStation VR pricing.

No Caption Provided

Whereas the Oculus Rift and ViveVR headsets require a gaming PC for the best performance, PlayStation VR will play directly off the PS4 you may already own. By comparison, Oculus has said you should expect to pay around $1,500 for an "all-in" setup, which includes a gaming PC and the headset itself (which comes with an Xbox One controller).

PlayStation VR will launch in the first half of 2016, though a specific release date has not been announced. Also in the interview, House confirms that Sony will have more than 10 titles available for PlayStation VR at launch. He did not name these outright, however.

"VR rewrites the rule book on how you can create games," House said. "You're seeing a large amount of interest and work happening among smaller teams, because it's possible to create something in VR that is very simple but still very magical."

During Sony's Tokyo Game Show briefing this week, the company officially announced that PlayStation VR would be the name of the device, replacing Project Morpheus.

What is the sweet spot for PlayStation VR pricing to you? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

So I guess 2016 is the year of VR. We need another Nintendo thinker that doesn't focus on specs but rather good content. Then well have a console. Even though the wii gets abused (by people) because you can't control it as much as you want to. It's still like in my top 5 best gaming consoles list ever. Soley for the unique experiences it could bring so simply to the table running on a Texas Instruments calculator.

1. PS2

2. Xbox 360

3. PS3/1

4. Wii

5. Gameboy/DS

I mean I didn't even put the PS4 up here even though I spent the most money on that system. [Even more apparently (Morpheus)] Because it doesn't have nearly as much content as the systems listed above. Granted were about to get kick ass games like JC3 and Battlefront (Hopefully. I'm not being sarcastic I am literally pouring my soul into hoping that it doesn't flop and only bothers to care about the specs factor EXAMPlE: putting everything to scale from the movies but not having campaign or…sniff…sniff…Clone Wars…Disney already butt fucked the name of the animated Star Wars series with that new shit that revolves around a guy no one cares about with a Peter Pan weapon) and NEEDFORSPEED (I can't believe no one is excited for this game that much. IT'S BASICALLY UNDERGROUND 3 BUT COOLER) oh and my most beloved games (of 4 years ago) COD ASSasins creed and Halo ( Halo. I love you to DEATH man after Halo: Reach but now I have to get a $450 Xbox one [including the game] and I'll probably only have that one game for the whole console. And even if they did make the game on the 360 I wouldn't have as much as the drive to get it cause I know I would be playing sub par halo) but STILL there is no content on the PS4 that's utterly worth while until a game like JC3 or Uncharted comes out. So I'll have to say that the Wii is better than the PS4. So in summary. MAKE ORIGINAL FUCKING GAMES INSTEAD OF GAMES THAT FEEL LIKE THE PS4'S TOUCHPAD IN AN EMBODIMENT (cause its ONLY function is basically to serve as the select button in which you pull up maps and swith cameras. That's it. On triple A games anyway)

About what I expected, and probably a good price point for VR at this time. The people who are interested are willing to pay more than that.

I can't make any decisions until I see what Nvidia is working on. They're in the perfect position to develop an incredible VR headset.

The main thing I want to be assured of is that it will work with the playstation 5. $400x2 is a lot of money for a console per generation.

@dunk_420: By the time that PS5 arrives, VR technology will have advance to the point that the current PSVR headset will look like a dinosaur and you probably won't want to use it anymore.

@dunk_420: They probably only have vague inklings of what the PS5 will be like. That's likely a good five years away and there's a lot of tech that's likely to show up between now and then.

@speedfog: It is virtual reality that is actually cheap price quote from sony to be honest. You have no idea what you are talking about. You think that kind of technology will be $200 dollars or less. haha That is funny. Also they have been already doing demos in steady 60fps so what lies and you brought up. Regular ps4 games have been doing it but not xbox. Let's not just hate to hate for no apparent reason. Just say you don't want it. You spent money for a console so what is the difference. You buys tons of games that total thousands of dollars. You eat out at fast food which adds up more than that in a year. I will buy it 3 to 4 hundred is not bad. People will buy the occulus at $1500 or build expensive pc rigs so yeah it makes sense.

this isn't about a pricepoint for tech, this is about how everyone will eventually receive entertainment, full stop. If you wanted to listen to music 150 years ago you went to a concert, then you bought a grammaphone to bring the music into your home, then you placed it on your head so you could carry the music around. Same with movies. First up we had to go to the movies to see something, then on video tape, now on a small screen TV, next on your head so you can watch anywhere. This is just the next evolution of things. Price will start high, quality will be sus, prices will fall, tech will improve, inevitable people. I can't wait to read the comments when we are asked what price we will pay to have signals, both sound and image sent directly to the fastest, highest fidelity computer in the world, your brain. Don't laugh, its coming

@rauqraf: Uhhh, brains are really not at all fast. Otherwise I agree.

P.S. Watch out for scam artists that just pump the memory of having experienced the entertainment into your head instead of letting you live the experience! ;)

@rauqraf: So you're saying in the future that instead of buying a TV for everybody to enjoy I'd have to either buy a bunch of headsets for everybody or have everybody be mad when I have a headset and all they have to look at is a blank wall? No thanks.

@rasterror: We all buy our own pocket computers now (our phones) instead of only a single family computer like we used to. We still have computers and we'll still have living room TVs. But your coffee table may also have a few VR headsets when you really want to get into it.

Right now, they're bulky, are tethered to a computer, and are paired to markers/cameras for tracking. In the near future they will be completely wireless and all-on-system, last several sessions on a single charge, and be as easy to startup/enter as putting on a comfortable hat.

Way further out still, those $500 pair of prescription glasses you wear will be the computer with variable opacity lenses/screens. You'll barely take them off anyway.

@mjc0961: u could be right about move but the vita is actually one of the best consoles to date. Think about how great it is. OLED screen. 2 cameras. 2 touch screens. High res. great specs. I mean for 2012 it was actually pretty good. It's just that no one bought it(besides me) and there was no content. There are some decent triple A games though. They would just need like a ps2 emulator on the psvita to make it really boom.

So $300-$400, as well as already owning a PS4, with only ten titles? This is why VR is going to fail.

Anyone who calls this a gimmick and talking crap about it simply have not tried it yet. I have a Samsung Gear VR and as someone who owns a VR device I'm telling you it will blow you away. It's not a gimmick and it's not just an immersive gaming experience, its an all around immersive entertainment device.

There's a good reason Mark Zuckerberg paid 2 billion for the Oculus Rift. I watched a movie demo in virtual 3d where i can see behind me and all around me. I've driven a car where I turn my head and can see outside the side window and the back seat of the car im in. I feel like i am in the virtual world and easily forget about the real world around me.

This is nothing you guys have ever seen, trust me.

@mjc0961:

You couldn't be more wrong. I have own every gaming system since the Atari 2600 and every handheld as well as build new PC every 2-3 years because I can easily afford it. I'm not bragging about my finance. I am just fortunate to experience the best life have to offer while fanboys fight over which systems are better I'm enjoying every exclusive gaming has to offer.

You are right about one thing, I'm not special, but I sure the hell am one of the luckiest person in the world. I take nothing for granted and know I'm fortunate to be where I am in life. I was just like everyone else being the most skeptic of VR. That was until I tried it myself.

I currently have a $4500 PC gaming rig, PS4, Wii U, X1, 7.1 surround sound system, and so much more I don't need to bother listing just to show off. The last thing I need to justify is a measly $100 VR gear. You are a fool to think otherwise.

I've taken this thing to work to show it off and everyone loved it. Even the skeptic non-gamers who laughed at the way it looked was impressed when they put it on. Some even ask where to get one and one even said he was running out after work to buy it.

I'm not generalizing, I am speaking from experience. Come next year when these are officially release you will see for yourself how legit it is. So if you want to throw insults like a little immature and insecure kid, let me enlighten you the difference between our argument. I make my statement from experience while you base yours on assumption.

@knyght1008: Way to put him in his place, dude. As a current Rift DK2 owner, I couldn't agree more. This tech is revolutionary and nearly everyone who has had the privilege of trying it out is an instant believer. You poor bastards that have nothing better to do than skulk around here and post your blind ignorant hatred for a new piece of tech that you have never even tried will be eating your words very, very soon.

you won't need the camera, and I doubt anyone will actually develop for the move. I have two move controllers and I would love if they would make vr shooters and a vr star wars game with them, but they won't. It will only be the headset, and if you don't have a controller... wtf

@adamdroid: The move controllers represent your hands in the game and that's how you interact with the world around you. The camera is what is used to track the move controllers and the PSVR headset in a 3D space.

Why is it that people complain when Sony prices their product but when Apple releases something everyone's like "this is the best product ever", people fail to realize that Sony has put in a lot of money for research and development.

@ps4_ever: Exactly. People are flipping out about the price of a device that transports you into another world, yet nobody bats an eye at Apple's unbelievably stupid $400+ watch, a device that is not only expensive as hell, but requires another device (an iPhone) to operate it.

World is dumb.

@mjc0961: "PlayStation VR, which is just a useless brick without a PlayStation 4 to connect to and yet somehow costs as much as a PS4?"

"but at least get your facts right before you go spouting off."

I don't quite think you understand what really goes into developing a functional VR headset. Maybe YOU should do some research and get YOUR facts straight.

@mjc0961: yet the Iwatch is the highest selling smart watch already . . . . also with two 1080p screens inside the headset and all the technology it involves it is actually worth it's price tag arguably more because it is trying to pave the way into something new that has uses far beyond gaming.

I mean come on apparently architects are using VR now because it allows them to get a better look at the designs they create before going full development.

VR has many more uses than many give credit and it's the single minded gamers that believe this is a "Gimmick" especially seeing as almost everyone who has tried this has commented on how great it is.

@mjc0961: just like how MS hasn't supported either Kinect? oh right of course ALL console makers abandon sinking ships it's only natural in order to not lose more and more money after all why support something the consumer doesn't support?

either way looking forward to trying oculus, Vive and PS VR it seems it's only the people who haven't tried these devices who claim it's a "gimmick" try having an open mind
