PS4 VR Headset to Be Priced "As a New Gaming Platform," Sony Boss Says

Plus, Sony says it will have more than 10 titles ready for launch in 2016.

Sony has revealed a rough price estimation for its upcoming PlayStation 4 virtual reality headset, the newly branded PlayStation VR. PlayStation president Andrew House tells Bloomberg in a new interview that the headset will be priced "as a new gaming platform," though he did not provide any specific figures.

If he's talking about a traditional home console like the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Wii U, House's comments would suggest PlayStation VR will cost around $300-$400 or thereabouts. Sony has previously said that it was aiming to go "as low as possibly can be done" for PlayStation VR pricing.

No Caption Provided

Whereas the Oculus Rift and ViveVR headsets require a gaming PC for the best performance, PlayStation VR will play directly off the PS4 you may already own. By comparison, Oculus has said you should expect to pay around $1,500 for an "all-in" setup, which includes a gaming PC and the headset itself (which comes with an Xbox One controller).

PlayStation VR will launch in the first half of 2016, though a specific release date has not been announced. Also in the interview, House confirms that Sony will have more than 10 titles available for PlayStation VR at launch. He did not name these outright, however.

"VR rewrites the rule book on how you can create games," House said. "You're seeing a large amount of interest and work happening among smaller teams, because it's possible to create something in VR that is very simple but still very magical."

During Sony's Tokyo Game Show briefing this week, the company officially announced that PlayStation VR would be the name of the device, replacing Project Morpheus.

What is the sweet spot for PlayStation VR pricing to you? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Damn, I was hoping for $150.00 or something close to that. That Simulview tv was cheaper than I thought it was going to be. Turned out to be defective but still. The Vita was cheaper than I was thinking it was going to be as well. Hopefully they pull a Nintendo and keep the price low.

I'm interested in it, but due to budget issues and it being such new tech, I'll be waiting a bit before getting one. Especially if it is over $150-200.

I didn't plan to buy it for, at least, the first 5 years after it's release anyway...

I'll wait for the news about people getting sick, nauseous, getting nightmares, having hallucinations...drops down to even think about getting into VR.

People shouldn't be so upset about the price.. Most of these VR HMDs are likely going to be around $300 for the first generation hardware, and could get cheaper as more hardware comes out. That's a lot better than the $1000s that VR HMDs used to cost, on their own, and they were no where near as good as the new VR we have now.

$300 is the price of a good gaming-display. Whether it's a fast PC screen, or a decent TV, $300 is about right. And these are MUCH higher quality, more functional displays, and the end result puts you INSIDE the videogames, you truly feel like you're inside the game-world. I think they're more than worth that price.

There will be plenty more games on the way, once the hardware gets out there, and 10 is not a terrible number for a console. Of course the Oculus Rift on PC will have a lot more games available, which is why I'm getting that, and I already have a beefy PC. heh

@NikoKun: Yeah, but unless I can actually use it for more than JUST PS4 games, than the price isn't justified.

I need to be able to use this as an HMD for other systems, or no dice.

I think VR technology would be more as a training sims for many professions like you r in cockpit and get ready to takeoff or a soldier on a battle ground have to complete his objectives, so if beside gaming it can be something more as a professional simulation hardware.

Bad Move.

Should have sold it with an HDMI input and marketed it as a TV replacement instead.

I won't be buying this for a long time.

@jb34304: Can you elaborate?

I have an old HMD that only accepts the Composite Red/White/Yellow inputs, and it's amazing. My only problem with it is that I can't plug in an HDMI.
it simulates an 80" screen at 6' away I believe.

Really, the main reason I want one is just to shutout everything else and be immersed in the game.

I played a little bit of the Metroid Prime Trilogy with the old HMD, but it's hard to read anything at a 480i resolution on them... I refused to play the game until a new proper HMD came out lol

@skyhighgam3r: Yea sure. The HMZ-T3W has wireless HDMI. Sounds really weird. The HDMI source from the A/V receiver or PS4 is transmitted to the wireless box/battery that connects to the headset via a wire. Linus Tech Tips CES 2014. And as I said before this is very expensive. I do not feel the viewer is a wise choice over the VR headset.

I hope that helps you.

@skyhighgam3r: Yes they figured customers probably didn't want kids and dogs tripping on the cables (not just cocaine, it's a helluva drug : :p ) They were trying to think "outside the HDMI box". Bwahahahaha real knee slapper there... I bet several of them went to head Project Morpheus (Now PlaystationVR....)

Sorry for the bad humor. But I had to, because it's there ;)

@BradBurns: That spin-off series and the entire over-sexism that permeates DOA is a travesty.

So many people overlook DOA because of the 'boobiez' nonsense. It's ridiculous, and unnecessary. DOA is the single best fighting game ever created... but no one knows that 'cause it's all a bunch of perverts oogling over scantiy clad women playing volleyball...

Did you know they were going to remove all that crap in DoA5? Yeah, but people complained so much ( I hate all of them ) that they decided to put it back in.

@skyhighgam3r: boo hoo hoo.

DOA5 is tame as can be.

Mainstream Western action games let your character have threesome sex with topless women.

DOA doesn't even show a nipple.

PS4 VR Headset to Be Priced "As a New Gaming Platform,"...kinda like what Microsoft did with the Kinect and Kinect 2.0? Sony completely abandoned those Move Controllers that were supposed to be compatible with the new PS4 Camera.

(I have a 2TB PS4 and 3TB Xbox One).

@flowingwind12: Meh, who cares? I mean honestly, would you rather use a nice new sleek controller like that or some old glowing dildo wands? And before you come back with, "Well I already have dildo wands that I want to use." I'm sure Sony has already thought of this and they will probably still work. Even if they don't I'm sure these new controllers will be bundled with PSVR and they probably won't up production cost by much anyway.

I think it will flop! I'm not hating on Sony, I love my PS4, but I just don't think it's gonna be as good as people seem to be making out. I'm lucky enough to be able to own a PS4 and an X1, but most people don't, why? Fanboys aside, it's because people think £350 is enough to spend on a console, why would people spend that again on something that will only have a handful of games, ever, because it's gonna be a niche thing, not mainstream like the core console, a la Kinect.... It will turn in to the Vita and Kinect where it slowly just gets brushed inder the carpet, because people like to sit with their controller playing the console they've just spent a fortune on and a nice tv to go with it. It's first attempt, it won't be as great as Sony are making out, disagree all you want, i will be right. They should stop with the gimmicky stuff and put that money into more first party games for their consoles people have already spent money on, because even Sony have been honest and admitted their first party lineup is 'sparse' this year

That's me done :-)

@birzinga:Compared to the last video headset Sony released, This one is a BARGAIN!! No joke the PlayStationVR will be half to 1/3 the most recent iteration of video headset immersion. And the one before that was $1400 USD... The PlayStationVR will have 1080P resolution with a 120HZ refresh rate where the previous models did not. All it will take is some quality surround headphones or a a home theater setup :).

So Sony rather focus on PS VR over the PS Vita? That's like if Nintendo focus on the Virtual Boy over the Game Boy.

Morpheus is a way better name, guys.

I was actually expecting a lower price for this one with Sony eating a little of the cost to help get the system off the ground.

That's a pretty reasonable price, actually, if accurate. It's a lot of raw dough, but for a quality VR experience (if it turns out to be one) that is a low point of entry. I had the pleasure of using an early OR model, and even with its many limitations it was a fantastic and exciting experience. This (and the new OR revisions) are so far beyond that
