PS4 Zombie Game Days Gone Features An Impressive Open World, But Could Use More Original Ideas

Lookin' for adventure.

Days Gone goes out of its way to make it feel like you're in an oppressive and bleak setting. With many scattered survivors, bandits lurking in the streets and dense forests, and undead roaming among the remains of civilization--the zombie-apocalypse is a constant struggle to survive in. And the only thing keeping you going are the meager resources you can scrape together, and a motorcycle that's seen far better days. Coming from Bend Studio, the same developers behind the Syphon Filter series and Uncharted: Golden Abyss, the upcoming open-world game is a massive departure for its creators, which shows some solid signs of ambition.

We recently got to check out the early hours of the PS4 exclusive, and saw some promise in the large open-world of this zombie shooter. You take on the role of Deacon, a motorcycle-riding drifter who's lived through two years of the apocalypse and counting--the game literally has a counter that shows how many days have passed since the outbreak. As he travels deeper into the wilds of the Pacific Northwest, he'll encounter bandits, gangs, dangerous wild-animals, and other ruthless factions seeking to claim what's left of the world, all the while finding out just how far the infection has spread.

Now Playing: Days Gone Has Desperate Survivors - Gameplay

No Caption Provided

In order to stay alive, you'll have to stay prepared and on the move, and Deacon's most valuable tool to do just that is his motorcycle. Not only is it his go-to mode of transport, but it also allows him to haul materials to various safe havens. During our session, we started out in one of the many safe-zones scattered around the world. In these areas, Deacon can meet up with several NPCs who can give him quests, trade resources, and upgrade much of his gear--including his bike. In familiar open-world fashion, you'll be able to explore the map and take on a number of side-missions from NPC characters, as well as minor encounters that lead to some minor rewards. With a world size that's similar in scale to Horizon: Zero Dawn, the map encompassing the six regions that you can explore will gradually become more diverse in layout and design, while also slowly growing more hostile.

I enjoyed the way Days Gone presents its world, but I couldn't get over how familiar it all felt. With the fantasy of the zombie apocalypse being a very common premise--survivors being pushed to their limits while dealing with life in a chaotic post-civilization where bandits and the undead are out to kill you--it was hard to find something really unique in Days Gone. It often traversed a very well-worn path in the hour I spent with the game. Moreover, the exploration was constantly bogged down by some noticeable performance drops and odd bugs throughout, most of which occurred during moments of heavy action.

No Caption Provided

Eventually, we found ourselves searching an abandoned laboratory facility operated by NERO--Days Gone's more sinister take on the CDC--which happened to be filled with the undead. While bandits and other hostile factions will be on the look out for other survivors--the larger threat to everyone are the numerous 'freakers' lurking about in the world. The freakers are essentially traditional zombie fodder, and can be easily taken out when only dealing with one at a time. However, they can be especially deadly in packs. In one of the game's more interesting moments, large swarms of freakers moved in unison like a ravenous wave shifting through the woods and streets of the world. Even when driving your bike at high-speed, they'll literally throw themselves at Deacon to knock him off--resulting in him getting swarmed by others when he's left scrambling.

In most cases, it's best to stick to the stealthy approach when entering areas swarming with bandits and zombies. Much like any other open-world action-game, Deacon has an assortment of skills that range from crafting, melee, long-range, and stealth. As he collects experience from quests and taking out enemies, he'll level up and gain skill-points to unlock new perks and buffs. These upgrades includes longer use of breakable melee weapons, improved aiming, and more efficient crafting skills for better rewards. With resources being so scarce, Deacon will have to scavenge supplies found out in the wilderness, and from derelict buildings and vehicles left on the side of the road. An ever helpful survivor-sense also allows him to hone in on points of interest in the immediate area, such as hidden caches and hostiles.

No Caption Provided

In recent times, the survival aspect has become a key pillar in many open-world games. Whether it's managing your character's intake of resources like food and water, or simply just trying to keep them in one piece while exploring the land and trying to make it back to safety. Days Gone tends to stay within that middle ground. Not too overbearing, but still placing you in situations where you're against a swarm of zombies with low ammo and healing. Deacon, while resourceful and capable of handling himself in a fight, isn't able to sustain himself for long out in the wild.

Days Gone shows a lot of potential when it comes to offering a large world to explore. There are some trace echoes of other Sony exclusive titles like The Last of Us and Horizon to be found in its presentation and environmental design, which aren't bad influences to have on this open-world title. Even though it was a brief demo that only scratched the surface of what we can expect in the final game, I was impressed with how much of content and sights there were to see. While you can follow the story missions pretty closely, there are a number of cool side-objectives and challenging moments to be found off the golden path--such as trying to sneak through a freaker-infested lumberyard, which went horribly wrong in my case and resulted in me having to high-tail it back to my bike.

No Caption Provided

But we still have some concerns about whether it can find a more meaningful way to distinguish itself, apart from some cool moments riding the motorcycle and the amazingly detailed zombie swarms. With a release in early 2019, there's still some time for Days Gone to get itself into shape on the technical side of things, and hopefully show us a stronger sense of its own identity.

They give good scores to the same generic FPS released each year, yet they criticize this game for lack of original ideas? How many open world AAA action survival games are actually out there compared to FPS, which haven't changed in like a decade?

This game looks ok, but I can't help but feel that it got way past its intended release date.

That would explain why it feels generic and unimpressive by now. I mean, it was first featured by Sony alongside GoW and Horizon. These other games came out to public acclaim and clearly raised the bar. So Days Gone seems kinda late to the party.

And how ironic the title sounds when coming from this perspective.

take one of the most overused narrative concepts today - zombie apocalypse - and combine it with a genre that has seen little innovation since GTA3 (2001), and, yeah, the result might feel a little generic.

I think the author might just be suffering from zombie fatigue. Horizon seemed to get pretty high praise from this site and it was pretty boiler plate open world design. Still a great game, though.

@Ish_basic: Finally someone says it about Horizon. Good game, I enjoyed it, but it really was very boiler plate.

Isn’t the game coming out next year? So, plenty of time for adding and changing? C’mon Gamespot. Too early for your analysis no? Plus, all games that have been delayed till next year I bet you it has something to do with matching god of wars production values? Days gone will be fine come release.

i'm glad they got rid of the infinite ammo, because when i saw that in the e3 demo i immediately lost all interest. also the horde seems to be more aggressive and when you get caught in it you're dead, which i think is how it's supposed to be. in the demo the horde followed Deacon around but never really attacked him (even when there were dudes standing right next to him). so gameplay-wise this looks a lot more interesting now.

i'm not sure i like the voice actors, not that they're doing a bad job, but Deacon's and Boozer's voices sound so alike, i had problems defining who's talking during their dialogues. Might just get used to it if i play it for a while though.

i agree with the others here, it doesn't need to reinvent the wheel, but the production values are gonna make or break this game.

I do agree with the criticisms to some extent but then again Last of Us didn't exactly have any original ideas itself other than a strong and emotionally moving story. If Days Gone can do just that, then there is no way it can flunk, especially since it's Sony we're talking about.

@Ali_Asif:

Exactly. You don't need to be original if everything you do is top-notch quality. If the story is well written, the gameplay is fun, the graphics are great, then nobody really cares whether your idea was the first ever or not...

I still like zombies. I still really enjoy open world games. I'm always down for some light crafting/survival elemtns. And I'm always a sucker for filling up a bar with XP to unlock new skills/abilities. Days Gone doesn't need to reinvent the wheel, it just has to be competent at what it's doing.

What concerns me isn't a lack of originality, but Bend Studio's ability to deliver a game that looks, runs, and plays as good as it needs to to overcome that lack of originality. I wasn't really a fan of Syphon Filter - and those games were ages ago - so I'm leery of just how capable the team is. I'd feel more optimistic if this was coming from a more seasoned studio with some experience in tackling these sort of projects.

But even if the game has technical issues and the controls are sloppy/clunky, I'd still give the game a chance if it had strong writing. Two words: Deadly Premonition. That game looked horrible, had wonky controls and poor UI, and suffered from all manner of ill-conceived design choices, but the writing, the sheer insanity of the story and the cast of oddball characters, made that game something special. So, if nothing else, I hope they've put a strong focus on that aspect of the game, crafting a bugnuts crazy story or, at the very least, filling that open world will some truly unique, memorable characters that, I'd hope, play some greater role in the main story. Because if they just pack the game with generic post-apocalypse tropes that any fan of the genre will immediately recognize, that'd be a huge bummer.

This may be well-worn territory, but there are a number of ways they can still make Days Gone a damn good game worthy of my money and my time. I just hope they can deliver.

Man I dislike the constant quips and talking from the protagonist. When I play a game, I end up making those kinds of comment to myself, live as I play, having the game do it for me just kinda irks me.

@cfscorpio: Horizen’s concept of technologically advanced robotic animals you have to fight with primitive weapons is much less common/more original than a zombie apocalypse / survival game.

Still, I’m still excited to play it.

@cappy: Sure but Horizon is still post apocalyptic with gameplay elements we've seen many times. The setting is fairly unique and the way you fight the enemies is as well.

Days Gone seems to be a bit unique in the way you can use the environment to defeat enemies, the motorcycle that you have to maintain, the zombie animals and the way the Freakers hoard up together.

@cfscorpio: Good points. I do get what you mean, but also get the reviewers point, especially because I was feeling similar when watching the clip.

I just started playing Horizon Zero Dawn and have to say it does not feel like any other game I have played. The closest thing to what I have played is probably Assassin's Creed, I guess, but the combat and storytelling is waaaay better and more interesting. And the climbing is not as good or central.

Its great that the game is a year away. The gameplay preview by easy allies is really unstable with framerate jumping up and down and overall a bit buggy. Hope they can fix that and listen to feedback closely. I dunno if I want another zombie game with TLOU 2 ever closer but as with all other games I will wait for reviews.

I recently watched the one hour trailer (of the developer playing with game informer) and yeah, what can I say? We'll all I can say is the Zombie train narrative Sony was once renouned for is now finally coming to a stop.

Yeah maybe it's somehow connected to "last of us universe" Sony's flagship killer(if you call it that) but it's definitely not going to over shodow state of decay 2, I dunno feels like gears of war 3 just with out the chainsaw.

The best zombies are the ones that smash into objects and scream your name crawling over each other furotiously wanting to maim and murder you with high intent.

It looks okay. However, I don't like the protagonist (from what I've seen so far), and the world just seems kinda boring. It's like Uncharted with Zombies...which is just kinda 'meh'. Time will tell, I guess.

How many kinds of enemies are there?

Humans, zombies, robots, demons, dragons, monsters...

All of them were used to exhaustion in games.

And I personally don't care if I'm fighting a zombie, a human or a demon.

The only thing that matters is whether the game is good, or not.

Complaining about "yet another zombie game" is pretty much the same as complaining about "yet another human game"

And if you want original ideas, just buy a Labo and have fun.

@gustavob: I am excited for the game, but it was not just the fact that it has zombies in it that gives it a "been there, done that vibe," it seems to be that the game play (combat, scavenging, crafting, survival) all seem very very similar to other games and the storytelling/character does not seem amazing, so there may not be enough to make it the game shine. It does not seem to do anything really really well.

I think it's a valid point to watch for, but we definitely don't know enough to say it is absolutely true. We've not even seen much of the game yet. At least I don't think much has been released. Could be the great stuff is yet to come. But the horde zombie movement seems to be the most novel aspect and that does not seem enough.

Still, I am hopeful.
