PS5 And Xbox Series X Scalpers Are Charging A Big Premium

Ebay is filling up with scalpers selling off the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.

After a busy week of launches, the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have so far been difficult to come by, with new stock being bought up almost as soon as it drops. Some have blamed the stock shortages on bots buying up consoles for scalpers, and while we can't know how many of the purchases were made by bots, there sure are a lot of next-gen consoles being listed for high prices on Ebay.

While it was inevitable that the consoles would end up on Ebay with inflated prices, it looks like the re-sellers are doing a decent trade, too. A look through the PS5 listings that have sold in the day shows the consoles going for between $850 and $1200 in most cases. The console's recommended retail price is $500 for the disk edition or $400 for the digital-only console.

One of the highest-earning recent listings we found was a digital-only PS5 with its price pushed up to $1645, thanks to 34 bids made through Ebay's auction system. Another more lucky customer found the PS5 digital version for "just" $850.

Listings seem to have gone for up to a staggering amount of $14,493, which one Ebay user paid for a preorder of the PlayStation 5 digital edition back in September--before the console had actually released. Some listings are still offering to pawn off their pre-orders, without actually having a console in hand to sell.

The Xbox Series X and S have seen slightly more reasonable prices on resale. Sold listings show people buying new Xboxes for around $800 for the Series X, or closer to $450 for the Series S, with the official pricing sitting at $500 for the X and $300 for the S, the cheapest of the new-gen consoles.

No Caption Provided

While Ebay's unsold listings show people still asking up to $10,000 for the new consoles, the sold listings show most people aren't willing to pay too much more than $1000 for the resold consoles. The fact that people are paying scalpers' inflated prices shows how much demand there is for the next-gen consoles.

It appears Amazon isn't currently allowing third-party sellers to list PS5s for sale, likely to cut down on the kind of price-gouging that's taking place on Ebay. If you want to try your hand at getting a next-gen console without paying an inflated price for it, check out our PS5 buying guide or Xbox Series X and S guide.

If you're trying to decide which next-gen console to buy, here are our reviews of the three new options:

Ironically, if MS or Sony had stated the initial console price were $600 or $700, gamers would have thrown a fit. Resellers selling for $1000+? Okay, I'll buy it!

If either were serious about scalpers, they'd have enough supply and sell direct only with a limit of 1 per household (no PO boxes). Retailers don't care, as long as they sell. Some guy buys 10 or 10 guys buy 1, it's the same to them.

If Sony can barely manage communicating how and when consoles will go on sale it seems unlikely that they will ever be able to do much about scalping. I also don't see much incentive for them or retailers to do anything either as long as these fancy new consoles (with next to no games) continue to sell out instantaneously. Part of me wishes that gamers were more demanding with these companies and the type of support and purchase experience they provide. There is incessant complaining on the internet yet we still seem to have no qualms about handing over thousands of dollars to these companies.

I had the Xbox Series X ordered from Walmart, for store pickup. I waited almost 24 hourus for it to fill, just to have it cancel 1 minute before the 8PM "fill by" time the next night. I was quite upset, went to an online marketplace and got one for $200 over retail -- something I've never done before. It was driven by frustration and defeat. I can't believe that I did it.

Yesterday morning I received an email from the Walmart I ordered the Xbox One X from. Almost a week after the cancellation, they said there was a "system error" that caused the cancellation and that my Xbox will be waiting at the store until the 20th, if I still wanted it. Just goes to show that patience would have served me better.

Since I have a few days though, I am going to see if any of my daughter's college friends have been trying to buy one and just let them get it for cost. If not, I'll let it go back on the floor for someone else to get. I'm just not one to put it online for an overpriced, quick buck.

Besides fanboys, microtransactions, and greedy companies practices, the scalpers are some of the top lowest I dislike about the gaming community. I have the money to buy a sx but there is no sx in sight here in South Florida, and once I don't have money that's when they want to release more stock. These companies find a way to sale us consoles in ways that is more secure for us, I'm tired of waiting for 4 to months just get my hands on any next gen console because of low supply

while scalpers are a problem, the ones that fuels these problems are the people who buy from them. Its a new console generation, yes, we know its exciting, we know many wants to experience what these new consoles can do, and yes we know they are sold out everywhere. But that doesn't mean it will never be in stock. Just wait patiently, no need to rush in to get these new systems, they will restock.

I'm surprised this is even an article. An illegal business making headlines like it should be the normal.

This happens every gen. Its just amplified now because of Covid online only shopping. Going up against the bots is futile unless you also are using a bot or get extremely lucky.

And people prove again and again, they will pay any price for a hot item. The must havers.

This online selling only was a bad move. People were still flocking to stores. Hell that's how I got my PS5, the old fashioned way. A little luck and getting up early day after release to stand at Target.

Tell people not to buy from scalpers. Problem is, they ain't gonna listen.

People are paying $800-1000 because we aren’t even at peak Christmas shopping season. They can add on another $200-400 or more to this price and resell in December, a nice cool profit.

@esqueejy:

Agreed. Any asshole that supports these assholes is an asshole.

The most passionate gamers in the world missed out new consoles at launch so some twat can charge $2000 for a pre-order. They may as well be standing over register and demanding we pay them for the right to purchase a console from the retailer.

In other news...water: still wet.

Of course scalpers charge a markup. That’s kind of the definition of scalping. It’s the fault of people being unwilling to wait a little while for a piece of hardware as though no more will ever be available.

This is like paying 2x the price for a scalped concert ticket, except in this case the headliner band won't even be performing at the concert, only a few opening bands.

Scalpers wouldn’t exist if there wasn’t a market for their services. Don’t blame the supply, blame the demand.

But this goes to show what hapless low achievement minimal scale losers scalpers are. I earn a decent living and I laugh at spending hours to acquire and flip a console for a few hundred bucks. My passive investments yield a higher return in a shorter time than that. Spending hours to make a few hundred dollars of profit is a waste of time and opportunity cost for me.

As much as I blame scalper for their typical predatory business practices, I equally blame buyers who are so impatient as to give opportunities for these scalpers.

@Oogazi: beautiful capitalism... i blame neither, because if a person got disposable income to throw at these things that AREN'T essential to life then all power to them..

Sadly, gaming has become more instant gratification based than in the past...

Seeing those prices on Ebay, I am willing to wait till 2021 to get either a PS5 or Xbox Series X. There's really nothing on either system that I couldn't get on PS4/Xbox One. I know my brother was able to get a PS5 for $550. He had a PS5 preorder but ended up selling it for $700 to someone. I guess if people are willing to pay a premium for a next gen console then so be it.

@xnshd: "absolutely nothing"? You must have been fortunate, in that you acquired the system so easily and don't have to worry about shipping the extra unit. I think it's safe to assume you didn't provide any warranty to your custiomer...

Some people have more money than common sense. I hope the scalpers are stuck with excess systems...at this point there's no real incentive for me to buy either system. My current system works just fine and I don't have to migrate my library.

@CBTDesigner: Nobody will be "stuck" with sealed NIB systems. They will absolutely sell, even if it's at retail rather than a profit. The only way scalpers get stuck with inventory is when the supply massively increases and the MSRP drops. Neither will be happening anytime soon.

@asneakypoptart: Much will depend upon where the scalpers acquired their stock. Who knows, the people charging $1200.00 may have paid $650 - $700 (replace dollar sign for whatever your currency), figuring they could still make a profit. Idoubt the scalpers they bought from would entertain any returns. It's a safe bet they'll wait until after Christmas to attempt any returns...while whatever return policy time limits run out.

It boggles my mind people are so fervent in their pursuit of systems that won't reach their potential for at least a year.

@CBTDesigner: i don't think its about potential... ps4 got person hooked so they see not reason not to get one early with the price being affordable for most..

Most have backlog ps4 games... Trade in the ps4 now while its worth something then just play those backlog while you wait... If you do the reverse and wait until next yr, your ps4 trade in value (if you plan of selling it, which most games do) would have decrease so great that it'll probably get you turn-off from trading it again...

People paying twice the retail price or more for consoles that have very few games that can't be played on something else. They're either stupid, stupidly rich or both. Imagine paying $1200 for a PS5 just to find out its one of the 5% with a defect. LOL. $1200 to have to wait for a replacement.

Not knocking you, but i hear the same comment from alot of persons.. its like they are angry with the rich or fortunate for being fortunate

@thecupidstunts: Sigh. The average failure rate of electronics is 1%-5%. I never said the PS5 failure rate is exactly 5%. But it can be as high as 5% given the average for consumer electronic failure rates. Nobody knows the actual failure rate atm. Not even Sony. Hence the reason I went with the typical consumer electronics average which can range from 1%-5% unless you have a serious fault.

I assumed that since the console has only been out for a couple of days and that we can't possibly know the failure rate for months to years, people would understand I was just picking a number out of the air for sake of the comment. Feel free to add your own number.

During a conversation about graphics card scalpers, I was told that there are also bots people were using to drive up the bids and then not pay so the scalper has to go through the resolution of that process and can't sell the item for a while. Seemed like a good counter attack of sorts.

I doubt people are actually paying. It's a traditional past time to drive those sales sky high and then not pay. I would imagine some dumb people are paying up to $2k but any more is probably a sale that isn't getting paid.

I managed to land a Series X order from Microsoft, having a blast with Dirt 5. They're truly next-generation and an extreme value, at retail (or sale) cost. It baffles me why they don't give priority to established gamer tags with activity/purchases.

I'm also a PC gamer, and had bought a 3090. It used to be night/day difference, but now with native solid-state and 4K resolutions, am very impressed.

@santinegrete:

I haven't been using the quick resume- but I will say load times are insane! My PC has a WD Black AN1500, which allows for 6500MB/s on Gen3, and is comparable.

I'm going to be selling off my XB1-X consoles to buy the memory expansions. I may keep the GOW5 SE console, but that's more for aesthetics. However, I'm really trying to hold out until they put out a 2TB+ card.

Do let me know if you have a PS5 and want to sell!

@santinegrete: Yes it works. And it works well. You can have 7 games running at a time. I have the Series X and the PS5, haven't opened my PS5 yet thou to compare, but so far the series X is awesome. Load times on old games are mind blowing in many cases, can't wait for true next gen games to come.
