PS5 Exclusive Final Fantasy XVI's Next Big Reveal Coming Spring 2022, Development Delayed

More info was supposed to come this year, but complications arose.

Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida says that the game's next big reveal will come in Spring 2022. Yoshida originally said that more information would come later this year, but due to complications around COVID-19, the game's development has been delayed by almost half a year.

The development team is comprised of employees across the world, and in order to offset the effects of COVID-19, the workforce had to decentralize and work from home. "This has unfortunately hampered communication from the Tokyo office, which, in turn, has led to delays in--or in extreme cases, cancellations of---asset deliveries from our outsource partners," Yoshida explained.

Despite these challenges, Yoshida hopes that they will have a minimal impact by the new year. The team is working on increasing graphic resource quality, refining combat mechanics, fleshing out individual battles, touching up cutscenes, and increasing overall graphical optimization.

The goal now is to have the team get as much hands-on time as possible with Final Fantasy XVI so it can be fully polished upon release. You can read Yoshida's full statement below.

Not much is known about Final Fantasy XVI right now, but we do know the names of three characters: Clive, Joshua, and Jill. It is also confirmed to be more action oriented. The game did not show up at the Tokyo Game Show this past September, but at that point the story had been finished and the English voiceovers were almost done.

Final Fantasy XVI will launch for PlayStation 5 as a timed console exclusive. Other platforms have not yet been announced.

I like how the so called "journalist" who wrote this article actually said the game is a "PS5 exclusive" in the headline when the Nvidia leak proved it will only be a timed exclusive before it comes to PC.

@Simulator_Shock: At least they indicated timed exclusive in the actual article, (even though it's kind of easy to miss).

Final fantasy games passed 10's dead, rogue like elements are not what define square-soft but most certainly square-enix.

Remakes are fine.

They should return to their roots.

@pharoe777: I thought it was PS5 exclusive. Maybe a PC version down the road?

They could tell the diehard FF community in-game details like new weapon types or tidbits about the new lore/characters/locations.. Instea dof using COvid as an excuse..

Th ereality is work from home should be more productive as they dont have to worry about clothing, lunch breaks, drive time blahblah. but the reality is when nobody is watching =we dick off ;D

@sippio: I watched a youtube video where a guy brought up some good points that I had never thought of. Things like when a dev is all in the studio together, they can just upload work and assets to their LAN. But working from home, imagine having to upload like a 5GB file of code and assets over your home internet. Several times a day. Then someone else may have to download it, and reupload again several times a day. All on their possibly potato home internet.

No matter how dedicated or talented of a developer you may be, something like what ISP services your home is 100% out of someones control. Im sure there are more than a few things like that many of us arent aware of.

@sippio: "Instea dof using COvid as an excuse."

I mean, as far as excuses go, that seems like a pretty legit one to me.

@sippio: Honestly, only getting set back 6 months after having to get acclimated to working a different way than they have their entire careers, in a giant studio, on a massive project, with hundreds, if not thousands, of people working on assets across the entire globe, is a minor miracle.

I'm a teacher at a small community college, and we NEVER got fully acclimated to remote learning. I think there's a lot hurdles in this process you're overlooking- and the majority of us are probably ignorant to.

@sippio: Official console development kits are only licensed to companies, not personal computers at some dude's house. THAT'S why working from home is slowing them down because they don't have the usual access to official console code (or so they have said in the past). That and Square is legendary for being inefficient.

I imagine if they were ONLY developing for PC, Unreal would be enough, but it's a PS5 exclusive.

Square Enix could change their name to “Development Delayed” and everyone would still know who they are.

I could ask someone, “Can you tell me the name of a video game company that recently changed they’re name to Development Delayed,” and they’d be like, “Hmm… I didn’t know a company did that, but I’m guessing it’s Square Enix.”
