PS5 Official Teardown Video Gives Great View Of Internals

An official teardown video shows off how to attach the stand, where to add storage, and even how the cooling works.

Up until today, we hadn't gotten a really detailed and up-close look at the PS5 directly from Sony. That changed with the release of an official teardown video, showing off the ports, components, and massive size of the next-generation PlayStation.

The video was conducted by Sony's Yasuhiro Ootori, who serves as VP of the mechanical design department in the hardware design division. After showing off the ports on the edge of the system, including a USB-C port, Ootori turns his attention to the nifty stand. When the PS5 is vertical, it's attached to the stand with a single screw, similarly to how it attached on PS4. When turned on its side, however, the screw is removed and stored in a compartment under the stand, and two hooks attach the stand to the side.

Now Playing: Sony - Official PS5 Console Hardware Teardown Trailer

Either way, the length of the PS5 and its curved design may make it a little tough to fit into your entertainment center. The PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro also featured the screw-on design for the vertical stand, but didn't require one for placing it flat. Likes most of its predecessors, that console didn't feature curved edges.

The white panels on the side of the system are very easy to remove, only requiring a corner to be popped up before the whole panel slides off. You don't need to use any tools to do so, either, though it appears secure enough to avoid doing it accidentally.

It's here that you'll access the PS5's storage, with a screwdriver revealing a slot for an additional SSD without having to completely open up the console. It's also where you'll vacuum dust from the system through special "dust catchers." That's true next-generation engineering.

As you'd expect, the inside of the console is a bunch of chips and boards, but one interesting component is the disc drive. It includes two layers of insulators that are intended to both reduce vibration and noise when discs are spinning. The PS4's drive could get fairly loud, and coupled with the design of the fan and the console's large size, the PS5 should be very quiet in comparison. Additionally, the SSD in place of a spinning HDD will cut down on noise. It should be even quieter on the Digital Edition, which lacks the disc drive.

The CPU and GPU are both fairly small for their performance, and the GDDR6 is arranged in an adorable circle on the main board. There's also a liquid metal cooling mechanism attached to the board that Ootori says has been in development for more than two years. Coupled with a giant heatsink which he says is as high-performance as a vapor chamber, you'll hopefully never see your console overheat.

The PlayStation 5 releases on November 12 alongside games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Destruction AllStars, and Demon's Souls.

I have always modded my consoles since the 5th gen. My first plan was to switch out the ps5's fan with a noctua silent fan, until I seen him pull out that behemoth of a roll fan. I do like that the top shell is easily removeable - I imagine a ton of custom shells will be out within a few months.

Good luck everyone on getting a 9th gen console, whichever you buy, looks like its gonna be a great console 9th gen war from the start. Awesome.

I seems that the real cost of PS5 is very well over the $499 MSRP, at least at launch.

The internal SSD is soldered to the PCB so no replacement (in case of failure) or upgrade option there.

idk It's so damn big, and 1/3 the size is just the ventilator being on top and then just a huge heat sink, I'm scared there will be a Pro version in 1 year with half the size.

I'm very glad they put thought into cleaning the system. This thing looks like it'll be super easy to maintain. No more consoles that sound like jet engines after a year!

I can't get over the design and I love Playstation. I know that's a shallow way of looking at it but it's too much. DS remake be damned I just can't. I'm leaning Xbox.

It looks like a sterile PS3 phat, just the only difference is, someone sand pappered the shell and added a newer shell

And Holly hell did the PS3 phat way a ton, sadly never bothered researching what that's backwards compatible with PS2 and 1

This confirms that i'll go all-digital this time, even though I support disc media - mainly in movies. It is $100 cheaper, lighter and on my PS4 - I was basically all digital after a couple of years anyway. Yes - free and cheap games help move it along for me. Now that I have super fast internet - downloads are no thang!

Not gonna lie, I'm a little concerned about that Mimetic Polyalloy. ;)

I'd counter the argument below that the stand is a poor design choice. I might prefer to not have a stand in general but it's a smart design and is well implemented. I also like that it should prevent any random scratches to the exterior.

Speaking of the exterior, I may not like the overall size and design of the PS5 but I'll be damned if we aren't going to see mods with LED's slipped behind the blades within the first few weeks of it coming out. I may even need to find a small battery powered remote controlled set of LED's for myself. It looks like it will also be quite easy for someone to construct and sell alternate covers. Good thing too cause that white is a bit blinding in my home theater.

They missed an opportunity not turning that CPU support or whatever it was into a throwing star. :)

It's nice to know that between that turbine looking fan and the monster heatsink, this thing should be quite and cool.

Props.

I was just wondering can anyone think of a console that has needed a stand attached when sitting horizontally in order to keep it stable.

It's like a bad April fools Day joke except it's real.

What were the console designers thinking?

Look Sony just forget about it if you want me to jump ship to Xbox you only had to ask.

Between this and the lack of communication about whether or not you can play PS4 games, the lack of proper support for game save transfers, the price of games, the Spiderman issue, the lack of any kind of giving a f*CK about gamers outside Japan.

I prefer the way Microsoft are doing things at the moment.

Sony are half assed and don't seem to give a damn.

And I see Sony can do no right in your eyes. You accuse Sony not caring, being half-ass and not communicating well and here they are tearing their console apart revealing everything inside. wtf?

@drsw36: It's a cool video and all but Microsoft did the equivalent of this months ago. They got youtubers to take apart the console and put it back together.

People got mixed messaging on whether they'll be able to play their PS4 games on the console. First it was top 100 then it was 99% then it was top 100 again. Does it enhance PS4 games or make them load faster? I'd presume it has media player functionality like the PS4 but who knows. Can you switch between multiple games at a time etc. None of that has been addressed.

I say it how I see it.I'll give credit where credits due and I'll criticize if I feel it's warranted.

I'll admit after looking at the entire video it was interesting to see what's inside it. I think it's a step in the right direction.

@afromakka: As poor of an argument changing consoles based on the stand is, it's far more pointless using the whole "life has more important things" angle.

One persons bloody stubbed toe may not compare to someone's gunshot wound but unless they're both in the same ER consider them both just as import to the individual.

*Yes, this is a pet peeve of mine.*

@afromakka: Like backwards compatibility and price of games. I did mention that.

Good riddance to you too.

I don't get bothered by people trying to offend me online by saying stupid things like good riddance.

People think they can annoy me by trying to insult me online but I really don't care.

You can throw whatever insults and snarky comments at me you want to but you're just wasting your time and being immature.

People don't have to agree on everything.

really nice teardown.. but this only made me wonder: this liquid metal they're using is very custom. How long will this last before it dries up? This is a valid concern with the PS4 lifecycle being what? 7 years? Does Sony intend to support this? I've built many computers over the years, but liquid metal is something different entirely.. and how Sony did it is unique. Does Sony really expect us to trade these in, or just buy another one? I guess we'll see as years pass how reliable it will be. I wonder this because both the Xbox and PS5 are going to be generating LOTS of heat. It's a legitimate concern.. I do plan on getting a PS5 and after I get both consoles.. I really plan to have both for a LONG time....

I'm not knocking Sony here.. just a valid concern. After my warranty expired I was playing Wolfenstein on my One X and it locked up hard. I disassembled my One X and found the thermal paste had dried up. With the One X playing this game at 4K/30.. most of the time... there was no wonder. I replaced this dry thermal paste with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut and replaced the thermal pads, and never had a problem since. I mention this, and the One X and 4K because these next gen consoles are going to run even hotter. Hopefully Sony accounted for this, but it still doesn't tell us about the long-term life of the PS5.

@robertbyronz: why are you comparing a sony product (excellent hardware) vs xbone (questionable) since it appears there new box already has a heat problem. now if you compared it to other sony console then you might have a valid question

@naydazng7: whose comparing? I was only using my xbox one x as an example. Also, there's no heat problem. heat is supposed to exhaust out the top. This has already been shot proven by Microsoft and other Press. These new consoles.. including the PS5 are going to run hotter then the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X. It's a fact due to the more powerful hardware.

I raised this question because typically liquid metal lasts 2 years before you have to reapply it. I would just like info about this. Perhaps Sony created their own liquid metal with a formula that will last for 5 years. We don't know. I'm not comparing or talking bad. I'm just concerned.

@robertbyronz: obviously I can't speak to the longevity of the LM, and there is no details on athe allow makeup.

But...it seems your concern would be equally valid with conventional thermal paste, as both would dry out eventually, so whatever warranty policy Sony has in place would be no different whether they used LM or conventional paste.

@Oogazi: that's a good point, but normal thermal paste lasts around 5 years where liquid metal lasts around 2.. which is the reason for my concern. Maybe Sony developed a new formula for the liquid metal.. we just don't know. I guess time will tell unless this is later addressed somehow, and I hope it is.

After watching this tear down video, I will lay my PS5 down,She is Big, And I have to admit, Bigger is Better (That's what She Said)

I wonder if you can get a plastic top side with vent holes, so it can decapitate heat to help it stay cooler

Any suggestions??? Maybe a drill
