PS5 Pro Leaked Specs Reportedly Show Huge Graphical Leaps Forward

Sony's PS5 Pro could be ready to launch by the end of the year.

Similar to its PS4 strategy, a PS5 Pro is reported to be in development and arriving soon. According to The Verge, the rumored specs for this console will see it ship with a more powerful GPU and a slightly faster CPU mode, and Sony is reportedly encouraging developers to apply more ray tracing features in their games so that they can earn a PS5 Pro enhanced label.

The system will be equipped with more and faster memory, alongside improved GPU rendering said to be "about 45% faster" than a standard PS5, according to the full list of specs in developer papers for the PS5 Pro that The Verge has seen. Overall, it's reported that the PS5 Pro will have a significantly improved GPU, and while the CPU will be the same as the standard PS5, it'll benefit from a new mode that targets a higher 3.85GHz CPU frequency for around a 10% improvement. It's also worth noting here that the papers list a "standard mode" at 3.5GHz or a "high CPU frequency mode" at 3.85GHz for developers to take advantage of.

Now Playing: PlayStation 5 Video Review

Alleged memory changes will see a 25% increase on the PS5 Pro--576GB/s on that system when compared to the 448GB/s of the standard PS5--and Sony's new PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology will serve as an upscaling solution to demanding games, similar to Nvidia's DLSS and AMD's FSR for improving frame rates without big sacrifices to image quality. Sony has reportedly built a "custom architecture for machine learning" on the PS5 Pro, which supports 300TOPS of 8-bit computation.

The Verge added that if developers can get their games ready in time, a holiday season launch for the PS5 Pro is expected. A recent Digital Foundry feature also analyzed some of the leaks that began appearing online, with one of the main takeaways being that the rumored console will give users higher frame rates, substantially enhanced image quality, and improved ray tracing features.

This news comes not long after Sony revised its sales forecast for the fiscal year that ended in March, saying it expected to sell 21 million PS5 consoles by the end of that period instead. This announcement knocked $10 billion off the company's stock value, and Sony revealed that there will be no new "major" projects released until at least April 2025,

The 45% GPU bump will get closer to 60fps but not all the way. They will probably have a "performance" mode which will reduce the quality a bit via PSSR to get the 60fps.

Ok, first off this thing will never play 4k-60fps with these spec's secondly it's a crap system because it's not needed at this point. I know a lot people are thinking it's because GTA6, let me tell you right now GTA6 will never run at 4k 60fps on this thing. Sony is only doing this to make you spend more money than you need to that is all.

@acious: Did you miss the fact that you can add an ssd/nvme m.2 drive to your PS5? 2-4tb drivers have dropped in price recently, look into it lol.

@nickpeck36: PS5 Pro should be at least 1.5 TB.

it’s dumb that my PS4 Pro had more than PS5.

@acious: You aren't wrong, they really should come with more space, but I wouldn't count on it as it's a cost savings measure still. I tossed a fast 2tb NVME into my PS5 for like $118 on sale, it's not expensive these days.

I was going to do more, but I have fast internet so downloading big games only takes a few min anyways.

The PS5pro will be pretty pointless, the PS5 is powerfull enough for me and to take full graphics advantage of the PS5 you need a 4k tv and a good HDMI cable,I know people that own a PS5 the don't even have a 4k tv.,if you really in too good graphics build yourself a monster computer and add Reshade to your games, peace

Sony has really yet to make the case for the PS5 in general, let alone a Pro version of it.

What's the point if the games aren't there? And I say that for both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The switch lacks the power of each one of those consoles and yet it's been the most successful. Sony and MS should try to be more like Nintendo: focus on the games and less on the hardware.

@d3ad4ng3l: The CPU will make this thing pointless. They didn't upgrade the CPU enough to make a real deference. All those demanding games that require a good CPU or even both GPU and CPU, will still struggle to hit 4K 60fps.

45% more GPU performance most likely doesn't get 30 FPS to 60 FPS by itself, which is what I think most people are hoping for with this console, an ability to play the 30 FPS graphics modes at 60 FPS. If this is just 30 FPS with more ray tracing, which is what I fear they might actually be targeting, this is going to be a real disappointment. The one hope I have is Digital Foundry talked about the PS5 Pro having a proprietary hardware based upscaling tech called PSSR which might be able to get to a good looking 4k upscale at 60 FPS, but time will tell on that, and both Nvidia and AMD had issues with their first version of DLSS and FSR.

@azalis: sure it does. Cpus only bottleneck at super high frame rates or when loading massively amounts of scripted NPCs The faster memory will feed data to the pipeline faster too. Nothing going on in a ps5 that's being held back by the cpu right now.

So after not doing much of anything to push game graphics this generation, because Sony and Microsoft don’t want to move on from PS4/Xbox One, the expectation is that we pony up more for a mid generation graphical leap….yeah, they can eat a giant bowl of F****

What I find funny and is the rage on tech sites:

My 4930k that's older then PS4 and DVR Xbox run with with ddr3 16 gig on a 1366 LGA x79.

The only caveat is CPU's before 2019 can't utilise avx2, meaning can't play Alan wake 2.

Now I'm not bragging it's for everyone but running it at 4096*2160 with reshade, ray tracing and almost 768 mods.

Now here's the thing the same pc I have using a 770gtx could not run bioshock 3 at 1080p at adequate 60, it stayed at 45fps, the same system that's how huge of a difference a GPU makes especially with dlss.

I gotta say the 4090 is a demon.

Absolute demon, so if I was to spend $2000 on a pc I'd scrap the console keep the old pc and get a 4090 second hand, and slowly bring In newer components rather going all out.

Even my freakish built annihilates the consoles only because of the 4090.

Problem is when the 5090 arrives the 4 0 series will retain their price so hopefully that doesn't happen because I need to sell the 4090 for a 5090.

And yes I only used what I needed, theoretically I rented the 4090.

The console is still lacking in AAA games. Maybe they should focus on that instead.

@xgalacticax: PS5 looks better than the plain square black rectangle that is the Series X. Also better than the 1970's AM radio looking Series S.

@eni232: Not me. Sick of the square block box look that several generations have already had. Imo PS5 looks nice and sleek. Especially with the dbrand darkplates on it. Series X looks boring. Like I painted a brick black and sat it under my tv. PS2 was boring black box too, and PS3 slim, and PS4, and PS4 slim, and PS4 Pro. To each their own. :)

@xd34dl1n3rx: I think the series x looks better. It's also better put together on a technical level, especially given its smaller size. But admittedly that doesn't really matter at all since in the end both it and ps5 do pretty much the same exact thing.

@xd34dl1n3rx: Definitely disagree on that. I don't hate the look of the PS5, but I'll take the cleaner, symmetrical, and more reasonably sized Series X look for sure. Sony kind of went crazy with the design of the PS5.

One of the problems with the pros versions last gen was the lack of developer support. Beyond some games implementing a % of better performance, there were really no games developer to the architecture to take advantage of all that power. Especially the xbox 8th gen. If you look up side by side performances on youtube, like the THE LAST OF US 2 - PS4 vs PS4 Pro Graphics Comparison & Frame Rate Test or Halo Infinite Campaign – Xbox One, One X & Xbox Series X performance comparison. There is a difference, is there enough of a difference that mass consumers would be willing to buy these new consoles, and more importantly is there a sales incentive for publishers to spend more money into actually taking advantage of the extra power, to really use it.

If we look at 8th gen that answer was NO. Beyond automated small % improvements, most developers really didn't improve anything enough to be worth the extra costs. It may be worth it for a very few, but the price to performance is poor.

Like most on here, I would like to see more high quality AAA 9th gen games. There is just too few publishers that can really pump out AAA games timely, in the gaming industry. This industry is bigger then movies, music, and possible tv combined, yet we have, maybe, a dozen publishers strong enough to pump out yearly quality games. Nothing like 4 th gen, 5th gen, 6, or even 7th gen. And we really need more players in the AAA games platform space. I would like to see 4 strong players. All competing as hard as they can.

These console refreshes will not push the gaming industry to give gaming consumers what they want, more games, better games.
