PS5 Pro Release Date, Price, Disc Drive, Specs, And Everything We Know

After months of leaks, the PS5 Pro has been officially revealed and will launch later this year.

After several months of leaks and rumors, Sony has officially revealed the PS5 Pro console, a mid-gen refresh of its current console generation. That includes a confirmed price, release date, specs, lack of a disc drive, and more details.

This isn't unprecedented, as Sony introduced a PS4 Pro in the last console generation aimed at making 4K gaming more commonplace. The PS5 Pro builds on that idea, as this console aims to offer a more consistent 4K/60fps (or higher) experience. To do this, the PS5 Pro is equipped with some impressive hardware and software upgrades in comparison to a base model PS5. Here's everything that we know about the PS5 Pro so far.

PS5 Pro release date

You won't have to wait long for the PS5 Pro to release, as it'll be available starting November 7, 2024. Preorders will begin on September 26, 2024

The PS5 generation may be nearing the finish line, and while that'll still be a couple years from now, Sony's senior vice president Naomi Matsuoka is aiming to find the right balance between "profitability and sales" as PS5 hardware sales start decreasing. "Looking ahead, PS5 will enter the latter stage of its life cycle. As such, we will put more emphasis on the balance between profitability and sales," Matsuoka said in February. More recently, Sony acknowledge that PS5 sales growth is likely over.

PS5 Pro price

A side view of the PS5 Pro.

Unsurprisingly, the PS5 Pro will cost more than the regular PS5. The launch price will be $700 in the US, while other regions will see prices of £700, €800, and ¥119,980. That makes it a very expensive console, though inflation narrows the gap between it and that of older consoles. GameStop is also paying a premium for existing PS5s, presenting a potential upgrade path for some existing owners.

No disc drive

The PS5 Pro does not include a disc drive, but it does support the PS5 disc-drive attachment. That means existing PS5 owners will need to pick up the official PS5 disc drive for $80 to play their collection of physical games on PS5 Pro. The drive will also be necessary for playing physical movies.

Leaked PS5 Pro specs

While Sony did explore some of the big improvements to the PS5 Pro, it didn't reveal exactly what's inside the new console.

According to previous leaks, the PS5 Pro specs include a "High CPU Frequency Mode" that reportedly increases the PS5 CPU by 10% to 3.85Ghz. Digital Foundry also corroborated these claims and it posted a list of the reported PS5 Pro specs back in March:

PS5 Pro upgrades

Sony revealed the "Big Three" upgrades of the PS5 Pro on its blog, and between them, the console is said to be close to doubling the power of a base PS5. On the hardware side, there's an improved GPU, and for software, Sony is introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling tool similar to Nvidia's DLSS and AMD's FSR.

Upgraded GPU

"With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother."

Advanced Ray Tracing

"We've added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console."

AI-Driven Upscaling

"We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail."

PS5 Pro Enhanced Games

Similar to the PS4 Pro, the PS5 Pro will play all of the same games available on the PS5 console, but with enhanced features and better performance overall.

"Game creators are adding PS5 Pro support to new and existing titles and with the big three involved the results can be pretty amazing. With graphics showing something like Fidelity levels of detail but at double the frame rate," PS5 lead system architect Mark Cerny explained in the PS5 Pro livestream. "This goal of delivering almost Fidelity-like graphics at Performance frame rates has been achieved for a broad set of titles, including Marvel's Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. We can see that PS5 Pro is close to doubling the power of PS5."

So far, 13 PS5 Pro Enhanced games have been revealed, and the list includes a mix of first and third-party titles.

PS5 Pro design

The PS5 Pro has distinctive ridges in its design.

The PS5 Pro isn't deviating from the current aesthetics of the PS5 and its slimmer revision. The new model has several stripe-like patterns in the middle, and is roughly the same height and width as the original PS5 so as to accommodate the higher performance specs.

What's in the PS5 Pro box?

The PS5 Pro includes a 2TB SSD, DualSense controller, and a copy of Astro's Playroom pre-installed, just like the standard PS5. The Pro does not come with a vertical stand; that will instead need to be purchased separately.

PS5 Pro hardware compatibility

Sony says the PS5 Pro is compatible with the PS5 accessories currently available, including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, the DualSense Edge controller, the Access controller, Pulse Elite headset, and Pulse Explore earbuds. The user interface and network services will also remain the same as PS5.

What about the fucking plates? Why isn't anyone talking about the plates? Will the existing ones fit the Pro or will we be stuck waiting for a new size????

For all the blah blah blah from whiny teens on boards like this - what do you bet this thing doesn't sell out? Or doesn't sell millions of units?

If not, so much the better - it won't be a hassle to get one.

What is interesting to me is - will this induce NVIDIA to release it's new cards before Christmas. I would hope so, because I'm ready to upgrade my PS5 and my RTX 3080 PC. But I think it's the same thing with the NVIDIA cards - those will sell out anyway, as well, because Crypto sucks.

@Mickeyminime: That is what happens when you're gaming is reliant on a corporation. They will always have shareholders and board members in which to please, and they come first.

OMG ! $700.00 and NO DISC Drive ! Thats some B/S there. I have been waiting for this thing for years and now I'm not as excited as I was. So in order to get a fully functional PS5 Pro its going to cost Damn Near $800.00 and there aren't any games for this thing that I can't play on PS4 or PS5.

Think the price point going to be the least of the pros problems with sales. Biggest going to be the poor no game rollout of the ps5 and the lack of games that did much with the ps4 pro when it was released.

I mean those cheap people still playing on ps4 actually can brag because they have missed NOTHING by not having a ps5. That is if they upgraded to a ssd at least. Not a single game designed for ps5 only that is any good not one. They saved more than the price tag of the ps5 they saved a whole lot on all the wasted money on those ps5 games.

But heck even if you got a ssd. Most games back in the ps4 days that were multiplayer switched to loading the lowest common denominator making the SSD pointless too. I remember it happening in anthem. For a while i could have half the dungeon clear by the time the no ssd guys loaded in. They changed it so whenever you had a hhd player you not only had that long wait you had time wasted blocking him so you would never get him in group again.

if you already have a PS5, for an extra 50 bucks you could get both a brand new series x AND a switch, OR, make some leaves look a little better some times for the entire 1 second you'll look at them on a playthrough, sounds like a good deal to me

This has got to be the dumbest generation.

Hardly notice a difference between fidelity between the two. It's not worth $200+ more to have that experience.

The issue isn't devs being held back by the hardware, it's devs not making games around its own hardware. This generation isn't held back by low-end hardware. It shipped with great hardware with no bottleneck, unlike the 8th generation.

@Gaming-Planet: its for enthusiasts who care about resolution and fluid gameplay. i hate the choice of 30fps and stuttering on an OLED TV or 60fps and trash resolution. this would solve that.

the price is trash but I would want this system so I can play all the games at 4k 60fps.

Then don't design a game that is beyond the specs of the hardware.

How many times has sony asked the press to include the words "the big three" in their, coverage and articles about the ps5 I'm curious.

Seriously though £700 is a joke.

The fact it's up to the game developers to enhance their games with a slightly "high fidelity" mode simply means don't buy it if you already have a regular PS5. If you care to throw your money away that easily for graphics then consider buying a PC.

Im glad that they kept the design, for all the haters.. (its just a mchine, you dont have to make out with it)

But i really dont see a need for upgrading my PS5, until a PS6 comes...

EDIT: BTW Sony just gave Rockstar another way of selling a new "enhanced edition" of GTA5 :/

That $80 disc-drive is currently unavailable, by the way... It looks like scalpers are going to keep hostage the ability to play physical games on this thing. Crazy.

Let's be real here. There were few people that said they won't buy a PS5 until the Pro is released...this is for them, not for us who already owns the reg PS5.

No disc drive. No stand. Not twice as fast but yet twice as expensive. I’ll stick with my original PS5 thanks.

This might be Microsoft’s chance to pull their tail out from between their legs, grow a pair and release a beast of console to win the GTA6 performance benchmark (for consoles). That’s your only hope now, Phil ;-)

Xbox is dead otherwise.

Rediculous. Why not release this as the PS5 from the beginning? PS5 owners are left behind with their expensive standard PS5. It's a very bad and greedy habit of console makers to do this every time.

@bhagenbeek: from the beginning? Because the tech wasn't there in 2020 atleast to do it in console form.

Or would you rather they have waited till 2024 to start the next gen when the Ps4 launched in 2013?

this is no more powerful than Series X by 10% percent lol. Yep and I called the price at 700.00usd. you all need stop supporting Sony but that will never happen, and I know it.

So if we use logic the PS6 will 900.00usd at this rate.

@ceelogreen94: since neither Microsoft or Sony really lowered the price of the base consoles so any pro versions 700 was pretty much the minimum they go.

Puts them in a tough spot for next gen now. Since this is them trying to brace us and say expect 700 for next gen since those machines are gonna be more powerful than this.

Yet if this flops and alot don't buy it due to that ridiculous price then next gen consoles could be in trouble. Sony and Microsoft need to understand the upper limit is 500 for a console after that you start to lose even more enthusiastic gamers since after that price point people just start considering a PC.

@rogerexplodey: spec wise it comparable to the series and only beats by 10-15% at best. However, games will never take advantage of the hardware in it anyways which makes it a bad purchase by itself.
