PS5 Software Sales Could Be Struggling Because Of Scalpers

Sony's system is sold out everywhere, but physical game sales in Japan are low enough to suggest that many of them aren't being played.

The PlayStation 5 released worldwide in November, but right now it's very difficult to buy one, with stock in short supply. One issue since preorders opened has been the prevalence of scalpers, including bots that automatically buy systems to then resell at a higher price. Now, figures out of Japan suggest this might be an even more severe problem than first thought.

Bloomberg reports that strong console sales are not necessarily translating into software sales. Figures they've taken from Famitsu show that the system has sold 213,000 units in Japan since launch, but the sales for physical releases of the system's top 3 games (Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon's Souls, and an unnamed third-party title) come to just 63,000 units.

Comparably, the Switch sold 525,000 units in its first month, and saw that almost matched with 509,000 sales for its top 3 games.

Now Playing: PlayStation 5 Video Review

There are numerous caveats here--because of forwards compatibility, it's likely that many customers have bought PS4 versions of certain games for less money, and digital sales figures have been on the rise. The PS5 also has a digital only version, which would drive down physical sales, too. But the disparity is great enough to signal an issue, and because the PS5 is sold at a loss--as most consoles are at launch--Sony is reliant on software sales to make money.

This could have a long-term impact, too. Bloomberg quotes Morningstar Research's Kazunori Ito, who belives that the system "could miss a critical chance to get into a good hardware-software upward spiral." This could mean that "the platform’s total revenue earned won’t be as strong as we hoped for," he says.

Hopefully, PS5 stock will stabilize in the near future--or Sony (and Microsoft) will find reliable ways to deal with scalpers.

If you want to buy a PS5--and you're not a scalper--make sure to bookmark GameSpot's PS5 Restock Updates page. We'll keep you updated when systems appear for sale again.

If people cannot buy the console, they will most likely get games for it. I bought a PS5 for when I get the console. It actually a good idea to do this, so your wallet does not feel the strain when you buy everything at once. I got Sackboy's Big Adventure. Yes, I could have bought the PS4 version and have already played the game already. I wanted it to be PS5 experience. I wanted a motivator to get the console, so I bought the PS5 version to help me springboard to that future.

@laurenriley3332: Or you could have just you know, thrown that $60 into a side/savings account and held onto it and instead purchased the game when you actually got the console and maybe take advantage of any discounts that happened between now and then.

@fitzy_2812: That is if discounts happen. The game is still in the shrink wrap, so the full value is still there. My savings account is fine. I put $200 in there every month. I already made the $20 that I may lose. Why do people go to Reno, Vegas or Atlantic City to gamble, when the house makes sure that people lose? Because it is fun to gamble. My main reason for getting a PlayStation 5 is for the new Ratchet and Clank. The game is a guarantee for 2021. If I am getting a PS5 sometime next year, then obviously I am at least going to get some games at full price brand new. If I was really looking to save money, then I could just quit playing games, and that will save me a whole lot of money. Why get the console next year or in 2022 when most games will still be at a solid price? Why save $20 when I can save hundreds to thousands by not playing video games in the first place?

This is going to be my last console. I do not see myself being into games as much by the time I reach the age of 45. Go out with a bang.

@laurenriley3332: But your entire argument rested on the fact that buying it now put less stress on your wallet. But setting aside that money does exactly the same thing. Putting $60 aside effectively says, I plan to spend this money but allows you take advantage of any discounts that arise until the point you do actually spend the $60.

All you have done is convert $60 into a game thats sitting on your shelf and locked yourself into that price, when the smart option would have been to leave that $60 sitting on your game shelf with the notion to convert it to a game at some point in the future or even many games if the discounts allowed.

Its like being told a launch date for a game and the company saying if you preorder its going to cost you $100 but if you buy on launch day, it may only be $60. But regardless of which option you pick, both don't get to actually play it until launch day.

Also, many of the launch games are already on sale, I have picked up several with 30-50% off already. Apart from Activision that rarely discounts their AAA titles beyond 10%, most companies have discounts within a month after launch.

All I'm saying is why lock yourself into that price when you could have achieved the exact same outcome by simply setting the money aside and waiting and maybe taken advantage of some discounts.

@fitzy_2812:

What place discounts games half off a month after the game comes out on console? I find this hard to believe. Usually games take about 4 to 6 months to down in price.

@laurenriley3332: I grabbed both Spiderman and Demon Souls for about 30% on amazon recently, Watchdogs and AC Valhalla were both 40% off also recently (they still are 30% off on Amazon Australia I believe) and I just got Yakuza Like a Dragon for AUD $55, down from $100 right now on Amazon, not exactly new but its technically sold at full price for Series X.

@fitzy_2812: Alright, that explains it. You are in Australia where games are almost double the price they are here in the USA. Your 30-40% is my 10%.

@laurenriley3332: Not really double, once you account for the exchange rate and add tax (which is included in the advertised price in Australia and not added afterwards), it comes out roughly the same price.

@fitzy_2812: My point being is that America is not going to have 30 to 40 percent off of games a month after launch. Cool find for your territory.

@laurenriley3332: I doubt many people do this. Maybe they will snatch up other hard to find accessories like the Pulse 3D headset, but games are not in short supply. Plus there is a chance the games you want might be cheaper by the time you get your hands on the console.

And, finally, these numbers plainly suggest very few are doing as you have done. Buying the games before the hardware would drive up the software attach rate, but the numbers show the attach rate is lower than expected.

@laurenriley3332: Totally get what you’re talking about. I pre-ordered Cyberpunk a long time ago but I don’t want to play it until I can buy a RTX 3080, so I can get the best graphical experience. Fortunately for me, the game is kind of buggy right now so hopefully by the time the 3080 gets more stock, the game will be less buggy and ready for me to play. Sounds like I’ll be waiting till March for the 3080. You might have to wait the same amount of time for a PS5.

@laurenriley3332: There's a logic, but it's still not financially the smartest. SBA could drop in price by the time you have a console on which to play it. Meaning yes you split up the cost time-wise, but still pay more total than needed.

@Lamesy: Maybe, but I doubt that the games will go down in price that much if at all. Willingly, stock will be somewhat plentiful by spring of next year. The launch games could be $40 by that point. True, I still lose $20, but you have to take a risk sometimes in life. It is the only game that I am going to buy before the console. I am not getting anything else. I am not going to invest in a TV remote or a 3D headset until I have the console. This is how gaming is. If you want to make the best moves financially to play video games, then wait 5 years and get everything second hand. You can get all the big games for dirt cheap. It is not like I am buying a PS5 when I should be paying bills or something. It is money that I can part with. I am also building up credit, so buying the title at full price may have been beneficial for me tp do it so that I can have a bill on a credit card to pay off to say I used it.

This is going to be it for investing in video games for awhile. After this purchase that will last eight years. I may get the next Nintendo when it eventually comes out, but this is where the train stops.

Maybe now Sony will remove their thumb out of their ass and do something about the scalpers. I actually want a ps5, but only at a regular price so thanks Sony for being ignorant and ruining lots of peoples Christmas.

When I get my ps5 I will buy an extra controller a remote and a game, so that's revenue lost by Sony.

@jojo_01: Sony did change up their queue system today. They do seem to be trying to minimize the ability for bots to snatch up all the stock.

@jojo_01: Sony and assorted retailers will not do anything about the scalpers because, at the end of the day, a sale is a sale.

@Barighm: As someone who bought an Xbox Series X and has ****-all to play that isn't straight from my existing Xbox One X... I find it perfectly plausible someone bought a piece of console hardware and was bothered with the lack of specific software.

I can't speak for anyone else, but at launch it's about 'buying in' to the generation more than it is picking up a console for a specific game.

@skyhighgam3r: Then their buying habits suck. It's essentially "shiny new toy" syndrome which isn't much better than impulse buying.

And there is BC and digital gaming. How can anyone be struggling to find anything to play?

What if scalpers keep on buying to keep the price high? I don't expect to get a PS5 this year or 21/22.

@STrugglingFool: the market doesn't really support that for a host of reasons, not the least of which is that only a tiny percentage of people are willing to pay scalper prices, even less after christmas is over, that market will be saturated quickly, especially as more shipments roll in, and they'll have no choice but to unload their stock. At $500 a pop hoarding ps5's and xsx's is a big investment to just sit on waiting for buyers.

@STrugglingFool: The stock usually becomes far more readily available around the summer. So i'm expecting there will be more then enough for everyone around june.

This was my experience with a PS4 atleast. Was damn near impossible to find one at launch in my area. But by july or so every store basically had 3-4 of them in stock at all times.
