PS5 UI Will Be A "100% Overhaul," Sony Exec Says
In a LinkedIn thread, a Sony VP says that the console's dashboard will be completely redesigned from the PS4.
We saw a glimpse of the new OS for Sony's new console during the PS5's reveal event last week, but one company official has offered some fresh details about the look and feel of the console's dashboard. In a LinkedIn thread, Matt MacLaurin, a vice president of UX design at PlayStation, said that the console's UI is a "100% overhaul of the PS4 UI and some very different new concepts."
“As it’s UI it’s practical first, but it’s a whole new visual language and a complete rearchitecting of the user interface,” said MacLaurin, as spotted by The Verge.
The PS4 used a design that was similar to the XMB interface of its predecessor, the PS3. That front-end has remained consistent throughout the generation, unlike the Xbox One dashboard, which has received numerous changes over the years.
According to MacLaurin, Sony will show off the new OS soon. Additionally, the PS5 will allow players to customize its hardware as well as its interface. This overhauled approach is a sharp contrast to Microsoft, which has indicated that it will focus on making small tweaks to the existing Xbox One dashboard for the new Xbox Series X. We still don't know how much the PS5 will cost, or the PS5's full line-up of games, but odds are likely that more details will come out over the coming weeks.
