PS5's Exclusivity Period For Deathloop, Ghostwire Tokyo Revealed

A lengthy montage that shows off upcoming PlayStation 5 games revealed the exclusivity period of several games for the PS5.

Now that the next-gen consoles are out, console manufacturers Sony and Microsoft are working hard to show off the games that will be coming to the Xbox Series X/S and the PlayStation 5 over the next year or two. A new montage from Sony has revealed some details about exclusivity periods for notable games like Deathloop, Ghostwire Tokyo, Gran Turismo 7, and more.

For example, Gran Turismo 7 appears to be a true PS5 exclusive, with no apparent plans for any other releases, even on the PS4, whereas the stylish shooter Deathloop will be exclusive to the PS5 (and not other consoles) for one year after its release date. However, it will be available on PC at launch.

Ghostwire Tokyo has the same deal as Deathloop, with one year of PS5 console exclusivity and a simultaneous PC launch. Project Athia will also be available for PC at launch, but it will be console-exclusive on the PS5 for two years after its release date. The montage also highlights already-released PS5 exclusives like the Demon's Souls remake and console-exclusive Godfall. I bought the Series X for my next gen console, and I don't want titles to be released exclusive to the Series X. Exclusives are terrible. I want games to be released on the Series X because it's my preferred platform and I love the way the system runs, but I don't want them to be limited from other consoles. Many of my friends have other consoles. A game being restricted to Xbox doesn't make it any better for me.

Why would I want my friends, and other games, to have less options to access the same games I enjoy? That would be irrational, pettiness for its own sake. I hope all titles release for every format possible.

@izraal: Fisrt party exclusives(those made by studios owned by the platform holder) and second party eclusives(games that have been funded by the platform holder) I'm okay with. That said, outright buying timed third party exclusivity needs to go the way of the dodo. I don't care which platform we are talking about, it's just a practice that needs to end.

I go much further in my views on exclusives. I believe all exclusive titles are against the consumer's interests, ie all exclusives are by definition anti-consumer. I don't expect the practice will stop any time soon, but I don't have to like it either. Whether 1st party, or paid 3rd party, exclusives are a very poor tactic to add value to a console.

When I hear about the exclusives you can only play on a certain console, that makes me feel less favorable towards the product, not more favorably, because it seems they have no confidence in the value they offer and have to rely on exclusives as a crutch. When I hear about the list of exclusives you can only play on Playstation or Switch, that makes me less favorable towards Sony and Nintendo. When I hear about exclusives you can only play on the Xbox Series consoles and PC, that makes me feel less favorable towards Microsoft.

The more exclusives you have, the less favorable I am towards your product. Your product should stand on its own merit, not create artificial value by walling off a handful of games from alternative consoles and PC options.

@izraal: That is a very reasoned and rational point and I can definitely understand your point of view. That said, I will still disagree, only due to the platform holder footing the bill for the game even being made. When it comes to games, the first and second party exclusives are part of the platfoms merit, not just the hardware.

What I will say though, is that the platform holder would still stand to make money from the games if provided to other platforms.

Kudos to you for your reasoning though. More people need to understand the phrase "Agree to disagree". It would make the world a much better place. 👍🍻

@bryanweary:

Thank you for your kind words as well. I see your position, and it's understandable. Nice to have some actual discourse instead of talking past each other, as is often the case in such things here, and elsewhere.

Still waiting on FF7 Remake PC release, glad to see Project Athia will release on PC at launch. 1 year wait is fine, 2 year definitely sucks.

Sounds about right. A year is a long time, and then Xbox people could enjoy it after. Two years for Athia is a nice score though. That game has potential from the bit that was shown.

Surely there must be some sort of mistakes, as folks on the internet have been asserting that all Sony Exclusive Bethesda titles would automatically become Microsoft Exclusive after the Bethesda was acquired by Microsoft!

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: I’m pretty sure MS even said that deals already in place will stay in place. Nothing to see here.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: Yes, but MS will enjoy the royalties it will get and with them coming to PC there is no need to wait for it to come to Xbox. In an way MS still benefits even if it does not come to Xbox for an year.

With the major deals that have been going on over the last few months (Microsoft with Bethesda for example.) I have a feeling the "timed exclusive" will become more of a thing this gen than ever before...
