PS5's UI Will Let You See Game Missions, Multiplayer Without Launching Titles

"Multiplayer game servers will provide the console with the set of joinable activities in real time."

Sony continues to gradually reveal new details about its next-generation console, now officially called the PlayStation 5. In an interview with Wired, the company opened up about the system's release window and some new features it'll boast, including improvements to game installation and user interface.

According to system architect Mark Cerny, PS5 will boast a "revamped" UI that will make it much easier to, say, see what multiplayer matches you can jump into or what single-player missions are available without having to load a game. As Cerny explains:

"Even though it will be fairly fast to boot games, we don't want the player to have to boot the game, see what's up, boot the game, see what's up. Multiplayer game servers will provide the console with the set of joinable activities in real time. Single-player games will provide information like what missions you could do and what rewards you might receive for completing them—and all of those choices will be visible in the UI. As a player you just jump right into whatever you like."

As Sony had previously confirmed, the PS5 will also be ditching a standard hard drive in favor of a solid-state drive (much like Microsoft's next-gen Project Scarlett), which will dramatically reduce load times. That isn't the only way Sony will be improving the user experience, however. While game installs will still be mandatory on PS5, Sony says players will have more control over which aspects of a game they wish to install.

"Rather than treating games like a big block of data, we're allowing finer-grained access to the data," Cerny says. An example Wired mentions is only installing a game's multiplayer component, or installing the entire game and then deleting the single-player portion from your system once you've completed it.

PlayStation 5 is slated to launch Holiday 2020. There is still much we don't know about the console, but Sony recently confirmed that the PS5 controller will have haptic feedback, and porting specialist Bluepoint is working on a PS5 title. So… I’m a little confused by this.

-As per usual, Ninja.-

I think the bulk of my confusion stems from the “without having to load a game” portion. Is what Cerny insinuating something to the effect that gamers would just turn on the console and it would already have all the data of what matches are going on for one’s library of games?

If so, how would that work? Let’s say I’m playing TLOU 2 multiplayer but don’t have the game in the console (or for that matter loaded onto the hard drive.). Would I just boot up the PS5 and… what?

Ugh… I’m confused.

-Once again. Nothing unusual here, Ninja.-

-DAZED & CONFUSED NINJA APPROVED-

BluePoint is porting The Last of Us 1 & 2 "Remastered" for PS5 if I took a good guess at what they are doing. I've never seen them do anything on their own yet, so if they are working on their first IP or w/e Sony gave them, we shall see. But, I think it's a PS4 trilogy port or some remaster/remake. I dunno how far the remaster train will ride during the PS5 era with backwards technology. I can just re-download my entire digital PS4 library (which is HUGE btw) or other peeps can just pop in their PS4 discs. The devs will patch those PS4 games to better take on the PS5 technology and they can't charge for it bec peeps will be pissed, so IMO - remasters are gonna disappear into more like what Square Enix is doing (true remakes) or remasters/remakes of games from PS1/PS3/PS3 era if anything (like MediEvil or games that haven't been made, remade or remastered just yet).

@phppapa: too soon for the second one, albeit it'll release on 4 & 5. My guess would be an uncharted series remaster

Also, remember that last gen, The Last of Us 1 (TLOU1) came out the same year the PS4 launched and if I'm wrong, then it was NO less than 12 months prior to the PS4 getting launched and we got a The Last of Us Remastered with DLC dang fast for PS4.

@aproxinate: That would normally be the first thing I'd say too, however... BluePoint Games already remastered the entire Uncharted trilogy (U1-U3) but omitted the PSP game(s). I think there was just one Uncharted game on PSP, but there may have been two. I know there were two God of War PSP games that I'd like to see on PS5 with ALL 6-7 God of War games in HD and 4K all REMASTERED (like how they put the work into "MediEvil" or "Final Fantasy 7 REMAKE" would be even better- not simply just a remaster, but a remake... like the new Ratchet & Clank on PS4 also fits into that category)... But yeah, I don't see BluePoint Games once again remastering the Uncharted Trilogy for PS5... we already got one and a simple patch from BluePoint for the PS5 version will simply do and most devs are prob gonna do that... patch their game so if you play it on PS5 it'll look and play better and take advantage of the haptics/better triggers & rumble and better buttons and speaker mic and audio in DS5 controller, plus the "PlayStation Assistant" (like Amazon Alexa kinda), etc., etc. etc. and so yeah- it'll prob just be like the PS4 version of the Uncharted Trilogy Remastered Collection (aka The Nathan Drake Collection), which is still really good IMO but patched- not a new PS5 game altogether. No would would buy it tbh bro. Bro, PSN/PS4 digital games AND PS4 physical discs will play with absolutely no problem (true backwards compatibility) so devs are just gonna patch ps4 games and PSN games and maybe even PS2/PS3 remasters that are on the PSN might just get patches for PS5 too (if they are popular enough). I would LOVE to see InFamous remastered (ALL OF THEM) for PS5 (partially "remade" too, like MediEvil/Ratchet & Clank Remasters/Remakes). It'd make sense since Sucker Punch will be busy on a new IP or new project for PS5 by now since they are wrapping up or prob already finished Ghosts of Tsushima, another title that'll prob be cross-gen (PS4 to PS5, like last gens games were). TLOU2 will be cross-gen and so will FF7 Remake.. Already confirmed for both of those and I think CD Projekt Red said Cyberpunk 2077 will be a PS4 title, but it'll get a patch or a remaster. I think we might get more patches this time around bec of backwards compatibility. ;) Think 'bout it...

Xbox One already provides that, since exclusives with expanded multiplayer components is much more prominent on that console. It is nice to see that Sony is following Microsoft's example just like they seem to be doing with back compatibility(with PS4 at least) and with the addition of a 4K HDR blu ray player.

Hopefully Sony gets on Microsoft's Azura network soon, so PSNow gamers don't have to deal with the max 720p resolution they get on streaming and will be able to match the max 4K output on Google's stadia and Microsoft's XCloud streaming services.
