PS6 Launching In 2028 "Feels Right," Former PlayStation Boss Says

"If the next PlayStation comes out in 2028, that feels right to me."

The PS5 is currently riding high, but everyone always wants to know what's coming next. It's been reported that the PS6 is in the works, and according to former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, the system launching in 2028 feels "right."

Speaking to VentureBeat, Yoshida the last console cycle was about seven years long, and if that holds again, the PS6 would debut in 2027, and he said that feels "a bit too early." Stressing that he has no inside information about the PS6, Yoshida said, "If the next PlayStation comes out in 2028, that feels right to me."

He added that the next Xbox might be planned for 2028 as well, based on a leak from Microsoft, but of course, this may not be true and plans can always change. In any event, Yoshida speculated that there is a chance that the next PlayStation and Xbox devices come out in the same year.

This would be in keeping with tradition, as the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S debuted in not just the same year but the same month back in November 2020.

Yoshida went on to say that the PS5 generation was "slowed" due to manufacturing issues pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic and component shortages. The PS5 just had its biggest sales quarter yet, propelling the system to more than 75 million sold. PS5 sales are up compared to PS4 sales in the US over their first 50 months, while Xbox Series X|S sales are down compared to Xbox One.

It was reported in 2024 that Intel made a blockbuster bid with Sony to have its own chips help power the PS6. However, Sony is said to have opted to go with AMD instead. AMD currently helps power both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Yoshida left Sony earlier this year after 30+ years with the company. Now that he's left Sony, he can arrange his own interviews and speak his mind, and he is certainly doing that. He also recently said he had "no choice" but to take a job inside Sony focused on indie games. He says he was told he could accept this position or leave. Yoshida also reacted to the Switch 2 reveal, saying it lacked surprises. Additionally, he offered up a theory as to why there is no Bloodborne remaster and revealed that he was surprised that Horizon: Forbidden West didn't sell all that great.

Off-topic, but on-topic.

Instead of worrying about the PS6. Can you guys worry about making and developing more AA single-player games, like Dark Souls 1 was with your high-end studios? Because Jesus Christ almighty this gen feels completely barren With all these stupid multiplayer games that die out in about a month.

@MigGui: He said it "seems" like it's disappearing. The only reason it seems like that is because most if not all game companies would rather drop billions trying to make the next big live service game, instead of making a game that will keep the studio afloat. This is because every company has this "Go big or go home" gambler mindset with game development nowadays. it doesn't help that all the advertisement goes towards those types of games as well. Just like at Concord.

In short: the market is disappearing because gamers aren't buying. It's disappearing because companies aren't developing games like that. There is a massive difference.

Plus, gravity Rush isn't a great example that they used. Because that game is a little bit on the niche side. Even though it was pretty fun. Also, it's company studio heads. They don't care about the IP unless it's making Fortnite money minimum.

@illegal_peanut: I don't think it's only that companies are the only culprits here. A whole bunch of great AA games flopped hard in the past few years, championed by Hi-Fi Rush, which deserved a lot more sales than it got. I don't know what were the sales expectations for that game, but even though it has 97% rating on Steam, its studio got smoked.

There is definitely some incompatibility somewhere, and if the studios themselves are saying these games don't make sense, since I can't see their numbers, all I can do is point to the facts. There were games, sales (whatever the number) were frustrating, and companies are focusing on having one big winner.

My bet is that the whole gaming space is too condensed now. People spend more of their free time on their phones, and a handful of games have a REALLY long tail which also harms the discoverability of new games. Yes, there were always games like Counter Strike and Diablo and WoW, but they were somewhat niche. Now waaaaay too many people are still playing Roblox and Fortnite instead of moving on to the next thing.

If the average gamer is playing fewer games per year, I'd say the AA scene is the first one to go, because studios are going to focus on inexpensive indies that, if flopped, have mild impact, or juggernaut AAAs that have more oomph to try and carve a space for them in this bloated medium

@MigGui: They don't invest in these AA games, period. That means the development of the games, which means you can obviously see the budget cuts in the game itself. And two, this is the most important part, advertising gets heavily cut on these types of games. Hifi Rush didn't do good because it didn't have any advertising at all, like, AT ALL. As a matter of fact, it was shadow drop without any form of announcement. It just dropped out of the blue, like a brightly colored meteor just falling out the Sky One day and crashing into a park. And even after launch Microsoft did a really bang-up job not spending a nickel on advertising.

And to make it even worse. Game developers expect AA games to deliver sells on par with AAA games. Putting them at a heavy disadvantage in the gaming space. Hifi Rush, which is a lower budget video game, and a extremely unique IP, was expected to sell more than the 2 million copies it did. Putting it in the similar space as AAA games would be in sells. All while still being on game pass. That is an uphill battle like a mofo.

For basic context, 2 million sells would easily warrant a sequel.

I can't wait. By then we will finally get LAST gen Horizon, God of War and Gran Turismo games actually built from the ground up.......... for PS5, like we should have got YEARS ago earlier in this gen.

PS6 will be a complete waste for its first 4 years at least.

@raph21: Crazy when there are thousands of games on PS5 right now and double compared to another console that launched in the exact same month in 2020.

So the same as Xbone and PS4 at any point in their console lives.

Why does everything that happened during COVID still feel so recent? The PS5 is not new, but definitely feels like it.

@Cikatriz_ESP: IMO, it's because there hasn't been several killer games everybody just *has* to have. There have been a handful of good/very good games, but not multiple really groundbreaking/killer games. The only game this gen that might fit that description is GTA 6. To me, it's less about COVID and more about the games, or lack of them. Regardless of console, it feels to me like each gen (assuming we get multiple more new gens) is going to "feel" shorter than they used to.

@WarGameJunkie: I think that's absolutely true as well, can't think of a single "must have" experience that was PS5-era exclusive. But also, 2020 still seems like it just happened to me. I guess if no one else feels that way it's just a result me getting older lol. There's actual science behind this, too. As you age your perception of time changes, probably as a result of a lack of new experiences. The days just seem to go by faster for me and it honestly sucks.

@Cikatriz_ESP: I was at my local GameStop the other day picking up a game and the topic of PS2 launch came up, I said man I remember back in 2000 skipping school to go get mine, and the associate says. "That was the year I was born". Reality sat in REALLLLLLLL quick ha-ha.
