PSN Pass, Resistance 3 bundle outed?

Logo for possible new online program spotted on box for not-yet-announced 320GB compilation pack; Sony mum on both accounts.

No Caption Provided Source: A Konsolentreff forum posting by user Darko.

What we heard: During E3 2011, Sony announced two new Resistance 3 bundles: one that bundled a copy of the game with a 24-inch 3D television for $500, and one with a PlayStation Sharpshooter gun peripheral for $150. According to a new report, however, September's sci-fi shooter is bundling up again, and it is doing so with an all-new online initiative.

According to a post on the German video game forum Konsolentreff, Sony is readying a Resistance 3 PlayStation 3 bundle that will include a copy of the sci-fi shooter and a 320GB slimline PS3. A price for the bundle was not offered.

It appears Resistance 3 is bundling up and kick-starting the PSN Pass program. Image credit: Konsolentreff.
It appears Resistance 3 is bundling up and kick-starting the PSN Pass program. Image credit: Konsolentreff.

Additionally, the bundle's box art shows off something called PSN Pass. Last summer, Sony's Andrew House said the company was "broadly supportive" of making online portions of a game available or unlocked for a fee, further noting that Sony was exploring an Online Pass equivalent.

Now, it appears that initiative may begin with Resistance 3, which is due out exclusively for the PS3 on September 6. Unfortunately, specifics concerning the PSN Pass cannot be determined by the logo alone, as all that can be read is, "network features only available in countries that have the PlayStation Store."

The online passes bundled with new copies of EA Sports titles, as well as Homefront, Mortal Kombat, and others are seen as an effort to make buying games new more attractive than buying them used (a sale that puts no money in the publisher's pocket). Typically, secondhand users must pay a nominal fee ($10) to access all the features new purchasers receive with Online Pass-enabled games.

Additionally, it is uncertain whether the PSN Pass--if real--will be punitive or appreciative. It is not known if the PSN Pass will bar secondhand gamers from some or all of a game's online component, or if it will grant new purchasers bonus material, like Mass Effect 2's Cerberus Network.

The official word: As of press time, Sony had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment or clarification on the matter.

Bogus or not bogus?: Both the Resistance 3 bundle and PSN Pass are looking not bogus. Given that the Resistance shooter series is one of Sony's biggest first-party franchises, it comes as no surprise that it would offer a bundle for it.

Further, the fact that Sony has gone on record saying it was looking into adopting an Online Pass makes it similarly believable that kicking off that endeavor with Resistance 3 this fall would not be out of the ordinary. However, it is unclear as to what form the PSN Pass will take.

@ellez you're in the world of subsrcibing to cable companies, bruh. that's more akin to onlive. i'm talking about buying a movie, or season 1 of whatever show on dvd/bluray, & it's mine. i can sell it back to hastings if i want. also, the royalties are in the contract the 'producer' signs. that's up to them & their career. they can be owed royalties for the next ten years, and the dvd cost stays the same if they sale 1, or 1 million. it should not effect me. Gamestop doesn't owe the publishers a dime. why should they just give away their money cuz others think it's a good idea? if that were the case, Activision would give everything to charity & just cease existence as a company, lol.

@twztid13 The car example isn't the best example. There's a word called "royalties", syndicated television producers get them all the time. Just because the show is seen once, doesn't mean everything is paid for and doesn't mean that show could be sold off by someone else for a huge profit margin just because it's "used". Publishers should have contracts with Gamestop about royalties, you dont just give away your shows and have whatever station air them anytime they want for profit.

@ishan9 I don't think anyone disputes that it's ok to buy used. Even the Supreme Court of the United States has upheld that (called the "First Sale Doctrine").

The only question I have for Sony is, "Will all your 1st games be using this PSN Pass option in the future?" If so, then that is going to suck hard. Microsoft doesn't even need to go this route, because we're already paying for online. Even if the 1st party game is used, the gamer would still have to pay to play the game online. I think it's stupid that gamers will have to pay twice to play a used Xbox 360 game online. If publishers want extra month, they need to start their own trade-in system. Buy buy old games and resell them yourselves.

The argument about security is complete boloney, it's obvious that the real reason is to prevent/Slow re-sale value. The argument about this being used to support online networks needs to consider the lost in not only the retail but the ability to reinstall down the line. The cost of paying MS for XBL's yearly fee compared to what Sony's proposing! It's a no-brainier Sony is doing what they do best, looking for that last dime to squeeze out of us. It's just one more train wreck to the demise of this console... I own all three and I love Resistance; UnCharted and I prefer to buy PS3 titles than Xbox or wii. With this move I don't see any backward compatibility coming for the next gen either... It makes me wonder if this isn't going to be a new trend will eventually see on all consoles soon!!! (I don't play muti-player games, but I do care about the resale value of my games). This move will make me wait and buy a used copy assuming the copies are actually playable after the initial install...)

@normsta @blackface But when you sold the car... Did you drive 200,000+ miles? THEN sell it to the next guy for 3 dollars less then what you paid for? Cuz that's what's happening with stores like gamestop... You should be crapping on the distributor(middle man) not the developer... F*&K I hate middle men... Also.. when you refer to the "dealer" you mean gamestop... the manufacturer is who created the game... (GOOD= Everyone is happy developer->publisher->retailer->customer (BAD= retailer rips everyone off in every way imaginable) customer->retailer->customer ************************************************* In my example the dealer would be the publisher (ie. Toyota = Activision). This has nothing to do with Gamestop. Everyone knows Gamestop's trade in system is a ripoff. I never trade my games in to them. I sell all my games on EBay or Craigslist. I'm not crapping on the developers, I'm crapping on the publishers. They are the ones initiating these online and content passes that lockout access to online gaming and certain content. I would rather the developers get the extra money if anything. I'm tired of seeing publishers laying them off. It's the developers who create the game. The manufacturer is hired by the publishers to package the games and ship them to the retailers. The publishers pays for almost everything, which is why them want the biggest return and the extra money. Understandable, but they shouldn't block content and force gamers to pay fees to get to it.

@Nightrain50 I hate Resistance anyway but if they pull this Sh** with Uncharted, I guess I'll be waiting until it's in the bargain bin. Screw you Sony. ************************************************************* That's what I've been doing as of late. Instead of paying full price $60 for these games, I'll get them new for $35 or less. I picked up Tiger Woods Masters on sale for $34.99 at Target. I would have normally have gotten this used on EBay for the same price or less. This Online Pass crap needs to stop though. I like to buy used games for cheap, but I don't want to pay fees to play online because the publishers think they need to get extra money. If anything, I would rather the money go directly to the developers since they do most of the work.

I've just realised.. If I'm buying games I want on release as soon as they come out then actually (technically speaking) this pass nonsense shouldn't make that much of a difference. However.. It is going to kill trade in the long run. The amount of business that rely on trade-in sales are going to be hit hard.. real hard. I've bought loads of second hand games.. it's part of gaming.

Seriously people? You buy the game used and give 0$ to the developers, who are running the servers for you to play online and maintain them, and sort out bugs and patch the game so you can play online without trouble. You give them nothing, and you demand they give you their servers without wanting any money? How are they going to maintain them? Use your brains before you talk people. Go bash Gamestop and other shops who buy your games for 20$ and sell them for 45$, not the developers who don't get anything out of this. When you don't give them money, don't demand anything from them, simple as that.

Looks like sony has confirmed folks. You need the pass for online play. << LINK REMOVED >> I can also can confirm that i'm canceling my pre-order and waiting till it hits thirty or under. Any game with the online pass is not worth full price in my book.

I say boycott this stuff. It has already gotten too large as it is. If people don't buy it, they'll stop doing it. Seriously, if you don't like the idea of an Online Pass, then DON'T BUY IT! That's the only way the trend will end.

I plan on getting the R3 Move bundle. I just got Sports Champions and still waiting patiently for Sorcery. I hate the Online Pass crap. Why do publishers feel they need to get paid twice for a game already purchased at full price? When the game was sold, the publisher got paid. Why do they need to get paid again on the same game? That's dumb. Here is some exampled. I buy a BMW from the deal. The dealer get's paid. I sell the car to a friend and get paid. Should the dealer get a cut too? This goes with anything we resell IPod, HDTV, Blu-Ray player or bicycle. If I resold my IPod, should Apple block all the apps and have the new owner repurchase them?

@ Samox I don't play though all 6-8 games at once duuuuuh. unlike some gamers I have a life. Hell I'm just getting to Portal 2 now and I brought it on release day and I don't play my videogames hours on end I'm too busy during the day. If I get a chance to play videogames I play them its a hour or two in the morning before work or after I get back and after dinner before I crash out for the night round 9pm or so.

@HiramJ866 If you're playing through 6-8 games a month, you're not working. And lol @ a "budget" of "only" 200 dollars a month towards video games. Obviously you could afford to buy new much more than the average person, yet you continue to throw your money at gamestop. That's your prerogative though. In the end you're only hurting the companies that make your games by buying used.

@ Samox Hey dill hole shhhhhhh. Some of us other gamers have other things in life to pay for besides videogames, I for one pay for my own room & board $250.00 a month + I help chip in on other house bills sometimes. Besides that I pay for my own Health insurance every three months that runs me about eight hundred and twenty-five dollars. I give my self a budget of two hundred dollars a month for Videogames that only 3 games brand new. If I get used/pricedrop games I can get any were from 6-8 "new" to me games. let this be a lesson to some of you yonger kids out there whos mommy or daddy pays for there games. and to all the other teenagers who can't afford any games and that there folk won't buy any games for them you need to manage your own money better. PS: i'm a 25 year old gamer with a Job and I plan on gaming till I die.

Yes the used-market sucks for developers. They probably lose a good chunk of potential new game sales on used games (although I buy many used cheap games I would never buy new). But should a developer sell one copy of a game, and then make more money off the SAME exact copy of the game they already profited on just because it was sold again? I don't think so. And no other medium works this way does it? Not cars, cds, artwork, books...If you sell a painting i painted and sold to you I don't keep getting money every time its sold. So I find it weird that they want cash on one copy every time its sold. The only reason Ive heard that can kinda back this practice up is the "server maintenance" cost for publishers. But that is really kinda weak since its not MORE gamers online; you already paid for the server use with the first copy sold. (If 100 new copies are sold, and they make a server and run it for those 100 people to play on for as long as they want; selling all 100 copies to new people still only has 100 people on those same servers - and the original owners could still be playing their 100 copies for no new charge, so it didn't actually cost them any more on servers. 100=100. Maybe direct downloads? But how many games have those?). They still sell more map packs and DLC with a used game too. i think Online pass for any company is garbage but I do understand why they would want to do it.

@ishan9 - i thought about that too, why not just make gamestop give some profits from the used games back to developers? I came up with a few reasons why they cant do that. First it would probably be a logistical nightmare. But what about garage sales and flea markets and ebay? Are regular guys gonna pay developers when they sell their own games used? Doubt it. So why should Gamestop? And what if its a really old game and the developer or publisher is out of business? Its a good idea, but i don't see how it could really work? Too many loopholes etc...

@ishan9 "cant they make a law where dev get 30% from sales of used games" A law as you describe wouldn't end with video games, no, every company from Apple to Hasbro will try to elect a similar law for their industry. Imagine trying to sell some of your used books online but you have to pay the author (or publisher) 30% of what you sold the books for. Imagine selling your old HDTV and Samsung comes knocking at your door for their 30% cut. Why not limit the law to companies who sell a lot of used video games? Again, it wouldn't stop there. These corporates would claim it is unfair to them that they are levied a special "tax" and it could damage their businesses. They would use any political turnabout to get out of it and if they can't, they'll make sure we all suffer from the same law. In the end it is the developers that have to make us want to buy new again and this means adding in extra value. Like making DLC free for those that buy new or creating special exclusive events/contests for people who purchase their game new. The truth of the matter, these companies want to be able to charge us an arm and leg for both the game and DLC while trying to force us to buy new. This is rightfully legal, but we, the gamers can change things if we vote with our dollars. The question is, are we willing to stop our purchase of the next great Triple-A title to show we are tired of this?!

OPINION: I only buy new games anyways because I enjoy supporting this industry. The online pass is a reasonable strategy to allow the developers to actually get Some money out of a used game when you were effectively using their servers for free.

Anyway you try to spin this, it's just more milkage of the consumer. They want to basically try and stop the used games market and this looks like it's going to be their main method of doing that, which is a shame because there are much more better options. While nobody knows the what the exact features of this online pass is, I'm going to guess it's alot like the stupid EA pass and the Mortal Kombat one, where if you buy the game new you get a code to unlock some extra stuff or to access online play. Still it's better than Xbox Live PSN and Steam FTW!

Honestly, if you can't swing the couple extra bucks for a new game, or can't afford the (assuming it's similar to other passes) $10 for the online pass, you probably shouldn't be gaming.

**** the online pass and **** thoughs greedy developers/publishers. Once the first wave of buyers come and go they should have enough money period. I just got one thing to say. Sony meet EA, Activision & THQ and who ever I forgot include. Everybody meet sony. I use online pass codes for TP and thats about it. If you wanna stop people from buying used heres is idea drop the new games prices from sixty to fifty to fourty. Nothing out there today is worth the full sixty dollars period not even those run of the mill first person shooters. Well i'm out i am off to buy more games used. buying used FTW !!!

@ishan9 People who have the money to spend on leisure activities like video games aren't dying for $1. and if they are then they really need to get their priorities straight. $10 is not a huge matter to most of us.Hell most of us drop that much or more on carry-out/fast food on a regular basis. If you're buying a game used the publisher/developer gets no money from that sale. Servers cost money to run and maintain. If you're going to be using their servers it's not unreasonable for them to ask that you pay a little something for it.

I feel dumb. This is just to play multiplayer if you buy the game new you have the card to be able to play online. Where if you buy it used, you have to pay the 10$ to get online. Nvm blew up for no reason. This sucks for used games but if I can get a used game for 17$ and the new version is 20$, I will just get the new one anyways.

It would be nice if the PS3 slim was one of the second generation Slims (Which is a tad lighter and smaller then then current slims) PS3 Slim 320GB ver 2. The Psn Pass is upgraded on-line well if it is secure and safe should be alright.

I remember very vividly going into Babbage's and paying $85 for Street Fighter II Turbo Championship Ed. on SNES back in the day. $60 in a terrible economy is tough to swing a lot of the time for most of us, but it's still better than $85. I might add that that $85 could get you a whole lot more in the 90's than it can today. Just putting things in perspective...

@nima_metal90 It's a code that comes with new games, and lets you either access more content (Mass Effect 2's Cerberus Network) or play the game online (Mortal Kombat: Kombat Pass). If you don't buy the game new, you have to buy the pass, which is usually from 5$ to 10$. Not all games have it, though.

@jshaas I agree with you, besides, whatever this pass offer it is an OPTIONAL purchase. Don't want to pay the extra fee? Just don't, it's that simple. @neosantana That's right. I can't stop wondering what type of extra content could be offered. :P

Wow, people really need to read the article before posting. Also, they don't need to assume so much about something that's not even official. Used game sales are killing developers/publishers. They get ZERO out of it. Having people pay for access to online features if the game is a used copy is not a bad idea. As the article suggests... it encourages buyers to buy new games, not used. All-in-all I think the "PSN Pass" is a good idea. It will cause vendors like Gamestop to reduce the prices of used games... I'll spend the extra $5 for a new copy. Of course the already low trade in values will go down as well. @warhawk-geeby... The COD Elite is free for most of the content offered. There will be a premium version as well. I'm also not sure what you're referring to with MOH... other than the online pass code. But, again that something to encourage people to buy new.
