PSP2's existence confirmed - Report

EA senior vice president admits in British interview that Sony has revealed device to developers, promptly clams up.

In addition to the apparently leaked pictures of the PlayStation Phone, rumors of the PSP2 have been percolating all year. This week, though, an executive at a major publisher appears to have let slip that the device does in fact exist--and that developers have already been exposed to it.

A dearth of information hasn't stopped amateurs from mocking up the PSP2.
A dearth of information hasn't stopped amateurs from mocking up the PSP2.

Yesterday, UK-based gaming site CVG released details from an interview with Patrick Soderlund, senior vice president of Electronic Arts' European operations. While chatting, the interviewer asked the executive whether or not EA had had any "exposure at all to the PSP2?"

"Well, obviously, as a developer we have had that," he admitted, referring to EA's myriad European studios. Then, he quickly added, "But I'm not allowed to talk about it." In September, an unconfirmed report in Develop magazine said that Sony has already widely distributed PSP2 development kits.

Rumors for the PSP2 have bounced around since early 2009, when reports of a new UMD-less device presaged the arrival of the PSP Go reveal at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. More recent reports have the device sporting a larger screen, dual analog sticks, a touch-sensitive pad on its rear, and indeed being UMD-free. Though Sony will not comment on any PSP2 reports, the aforementioned rumor has it arriving during the 2011 holiday season.

@MontyPython4-r, Sony will give us discounts. If not, well, what can we do? Besides, the only reason to buy PSP2 is because of improved tech., new gameplay it'll bring, and the new games.

@LondonGamer986 The PSP 3000 was/is a decent system. It is by no means grand, but I think the reason it wasn't received as well as the DS was because the PSP didn't have a remarkable game library, although it did have more 'violent' games than the DS. The main reason I bought a 3000 was for the game 'Monster Hunter Freedom Unite', which is an awesome game to play. This PSP2 should be better than its successor, though.

@Threesixtyci That won't happen, at least not for a while, because cell phone hardware isn't specialized enough for gaming tasks to better a purpose-built handheld, and the form factor leaves a lot to be desired (gaming on the iPhone, for instance, sucks without buttons). Not only that, but the extra functions of a phone make the devices a lot more expensive. Yeah, you could subsidize your purchase by signing up for a 2-year contract, but then you're stuck in a contract, and your phone will be obsolete by the end of it. Handhelds are cheaper and have longer product lives. Not only that, but there's also the issue of the sheer number of different phones out there. While most of them are migrating towards a variant of ARM chips, there's no actual hardware standard (some chips might use the same ARM design, but the SoC itself utilizes a different GPU), and thus game developers are unable to extract the most out of the hardware, lest they leave some gamers out to dry. An actual, purpose-built game platform offers stability and conformity of system specs that allows developers to capitalize on their programming abilities, and allows them to serve their products to their best customers at a premium, because the experience is significantly better. And nobody really seriously games on their phones... it's usually a temporary diversion when people find themselves waiting for something.

I think, Cell phones are going to end up dominating the handheld gaming market when it's all said and done. Unless the PSP2 can make a phone call, I suspect it's going to be another Sony failure.

@MontyPython4-r, you can get most all your PSP UMD games in PSN, and what does loosing entire used games market suppose to mean? PSP UMDs are not the driving force of the used game market. Most PSP games are pirated, and played illegally. PSP UMDs have little effect on the used game market, and you'll get games cheaper in PSN after the release of PSP2. No way Sony is sell PSP2 games for $40 dollars. They'll be too stupid to do that.

MontyPython4-r if you did about 2 mins of research you would know the console is being designed to handle 'memory-stick' based games. Why would you be upset about the lack of UMD anyway? It's an archaic technology, bulks up the system, is fragile, slow and pathetic by current standards. lol @ external UMD drive.

Why does it have to be UMD-free? What will happen to the trading of used games now? They better release an external UMD drive, or I'm not buying it.

@gshell PSPGO digital was a test on whether to release PSP2 digital only and I believe it has failed. Rumor has them using something similar to SD Card/DS Card technology.

honestly i'm really a little annoyed about the umd/digital thing but i'm learning to cope and deal because sony isn't going to create a solution for those of us who spent a lot of money on the obsolete format. However with that being said, sony should just treat the psp2 as a totally new console with digital distribution and treat the psp's with umd's as perhaps a starter portable console for younger gamers in the 5-10 age ranges. don't even release the same games on either platform. just create umd games for the psp's that have umd's, and create totatlly different games for the psp2. it would suck but i can accept that scenario more since apparently they are moving away from the umd format and going digital

So wheres the confirmation? An EA dev says "oh yeah we've had exposure to a PSP2" if he hasnt had a list of information or specs then its still as good as smoke. Misleading article is misleading!

Good to know PSP2's existence is known, too bad the actual handheld hasn't shown itself yet. I like the idea of having game format on memory stick though with the sacrifice of UMD, it would really make a few gamers unhappy since some of their favorite UMD games are still not available for purchase at the PS Store.

@qubeley Probably not. Look, I'm not a Steam user and I'm not very familiar with it but I have read that Steam is a pretty good service and it's all about digital download(might be wrong on this, not sure). It's suppose to be an excellent service because there are so many good deals involving downloadable games and PC gamers love it. Well, this is what I have read about it. My point is that if Sony could do something similar to Steam, Sony could also have a better online service, digital games could be more popular and people would not complain so much. Digital games are expensive, for instance, last time I checked, PSP Dante's Inferno is still 39.99 USD on the PS Store, still the same price since it first came out. If I knew more about Steam, I'll be able to explain better but I can't.

The issue here is not whether it is more powerful or not but the price point. The failure of PSPgo is a good example and I didn't buy my PSP until it went really down in price. It is a great console but the price points are not customer friendly. Sony should have learnt that from PS3, PSP and PSPgo by now and hopefully they will rectify that with PSP2.

I wonder if the psp2 will be able to compete with even the ds phat, because the first one certainly couldn't. In fact, the first psp didn't even come close to rivaling the gba. I don't even think their sales came up to the original gameboy either. Stop sucking so horribly sony and maybe I'll buy your crap. Until then, embarrass yourself all by yourself in a corner.
