At press time, funding stands at $2,037,838, which is 61 percent of the game's $3.3 million target. The campaign launched on December 3, so there are 35 days left to raise the final $1.3 million. The campaign raised its first $1 million in just 24 hours.
Of the $2 million that's been raised so far, $1,049,000 has come from traditional pledges, while $998,000 has come in the form of investments. Fig, unlike Kickstarter or Indiegogo, allows people to have a monetary stake in a game, meaning if the game does well, they'll get to share in that success.
The $3.3 million budget is far less than is actually needed--previous estimates suggested the project would need upwards of $10 million to happen. The Fig campaign explains that Double Fine is "putting up a significant portion of the development funds" itself, and an unspecified "external partner" is also chipping in.
Psychonauts 2 was officially announced on December 3 during The Game Awards. The game is slated to arrive some three years from now in fall 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
In Psychonauts 2, Raz--the hero of the first game, released in 2005--finally realizes his dream and gets to visit the Psychonauts Headquarters. But upon arrival, everything changes.
"He finds it's not the perfect place he expected and quickly realizes that the Psychonauts need him more than he needs them," reads a line from the game's official description.
