Double Fine's latest crowdfunding campaign is already off to a strong start, with Psychonauts 2 having attracted more than $1 million since it launched last night.
As announced during The Game Awards, Double Fine is handling this project through Fig. This is the new crowdfunding platform that allows the public to invest in game projects and earn money on the back end, rather than simply giving money in return for pre-defined rewards. Of the $1 million that's been raised so far, roughly 40 percent has come in the form of investments, with the rest being more traditional pledges.
Double Fine is seeking $3.3 million to make the game, and it will only receive the Fig money if that goal is reached. While the first dozen-plus hours aren't necessarily indicative of how things will go from here, the campaign is off to a promising start. It runs until January 7, leaving plenty of time for the remaining $2.3 million to be raised.
The $3.3 million budget is far less than is actually needed--previous estimates suggested the project would need upwards of $10 million to happen. The Fig campaign explains that Double Fine is "putting up a significant portion of the development funds" itself, and an unspecified "external partner" is also chipping in.
Psychonauts 2 is expected to release at some point in 2018 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4. For more on how the project came about, check out our extensive chat with Double Fine's Tim Schafer.
