Psychonauts 3 Isn't In Development Right Now, Double Fine Confirms

It looks like a third entry isn't happening soon.

Double Fine Productions has confirmed that it's not working on Psychonauts 3 at the moment, dashing any hopes that the franchise would see a new entry soon.

In an interview with Cressup, Psychonauts creator Tim Schafer said, "I'm not working on Psychonauts 3. We're kind of at the 'Willy Wonka closed doors' phase. But soon we could open and cause a lot of harm to a lot of children, just like Willy Wonka."

It seems like Schafer is hinting that some information may be revealed at a later date, perhaps related to Psychonauts. Last month, Xbox Australia posted a picture on Twitter that seemed to tease Psychonauts 3, with the words "Psycho" followed by three Xs. However, the account clarified that it was just a joke based on the British game, Noughts and Crosses. Psychonauts 3 wasn't revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase 2023, either.

Schafer also said last year that he was keen to pursue a new original game as the studio's next project instead of Psychonauts 3. Considering that Double Fine is now part of Xbox Games Studios, whatever the studio's next game, whether it's an original IP or Psychonauts 3, will almost certainly launch on Xbox Game Pass.

Psychonauts 2 launched in August 2021 for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The first Psychonauts was released in April 2005, which is a 16-year gap between both entries. Hopefully, we won't have to wait that long for another game in the series.

In GameSpot's Psychonauts 2 review, we said, "On the surface, Psychonauts 2 is an engaging, ambitious, honed-in take on colorful 3D platformers. However, the most rewarding aspect hasn't just been mastering its platforms or combat, but peeling back the layers to see what's beneath it."

I think Schäfer said once that he likes to work on new titles and not so much on sequels.
Double Fine thinks often outside of the box so it will be interesting to see what they will come up with this time.
