Quake Champions Is PC-Only for Launch, But Console Versions Not Ruled Out
"It's a PC game. No excuses. No limitations."
Id Software's new shooter, Quake Champions, will be released exclusively for PC at launch, though the developer has not ruled out a console version down the line.
"It's a PC game. No excuses. No limitations," Id Software boss Tim Willits told GameSpot in an interview today at E3 2016. "We're going to focus on one platform."
Willits went on to say that he still "love[s] [his] console fans," and teased that, "We're not totally shutting the door on consoles." However, it's too soon to say if the game will ever come to consoles.
"We drew lines around this game to make the best game we can within the scope," Willits said about releasing Quake Champions on PC only for launch.
We also asked Willits, id Software's creative director, about how beefy of a PC fans will need to run Quake Champions. He said the game is being designed to run on a variety of systems.
"We want to make sure that we have as many people as we possibly can," he explained. "You'll be able to turn down your specs and get a decent game at lower-end. But we want to shine on good systems."
The game runs at 120hz and also sports an uncapped frame rate.
Quake Champions is currently without a release date. Willits said id Software is not going to rush the game to release, in part because balancing the game (only four characters have been announced so far, but there will be more) is not so easy a task.
"It's going to come out after a really, really long closed beta. I'm telling people now, it's going to be a long beta," he explained.
Quake Champions is one of a handful of games Bethesda announced this week; the others included Skyrim HD and a new Prey. Bethesda also announced more DLC for Doom and Fallout 4.
More details on Quake Champions will be announced at QuakeCon 2016 this August.
