Quake Champions Is Permanently Free-To-Play Now

The free-to-play period has been extended forever.

At QuakeCon 2018, Bethesda announced that Quake Champions would permanently remain a free-to-play title. Originally, anyone who downloaded the early access game within a limited time window got Quake Champions for free. Bethesda has just extended that deal indefinitely.

Announced in 2017, Quake Champions is the long-awaited sequel to 2005's Quake 4. A class-based first-person shooter, Quake Champions features heated firefights across an assortment of battlefields and arenas. The game is one of our most anticipated exclusives coming to PC in 2018, launching sometime later this year.

Even though Quake Champions is free, downloading the game won't net you its entire roster of diverse champions. If you want to start Quake Champions with everyone unlocked, you'll have to buy the Champions Pack.

Also during QuakeCon, Bethesda showcased new gameplay trailers for Doom: Eternal and Rage 2. The Doom: Eternal trailer displayed new weapons and abilities, as well as exceptionally visceral combat. The Rage 2 trailer offers a more in-depth look at convoy takedowns.

So is this game now pay to win, or a freemium game? or are the microtransactions purely cosmetic?

I understand that they need to make money, and support that, as long as I can lose based on my lack of ability, rather than lack of credit card. If its all cosmetic, i am all in. And will gladly drop a 20 every now and then so i can play quakebarbydressup.

2 things will lose my support instantly.

In game advantage that requires a real money purchase.

Real money purchases that bypass ingame mechanics that also give an advantage in gameplay.

Examples.

500 kills unlocks weapon skin but can bypass by spending $5.99 (or premium currency that costs $$) = Im fine with it.

500 kills with weapon unlocks increased ammo capacity mod or bypass by spending $5.99 = will probably play, but will never give them my money.

Get exclusive 10% faster reload with exclusive $5.99 support pack. = wont touch it ever.

If its just purely cosmetic, irregardless of if it can be unlocked for free....or only available by cash investment Its fine.

I even support new characters/avatars behind a paywall, as long as they have NO advantage over the vanilla chars.

@gord0nd: You can buy the champions pack($30) which will give you all current and future champions forever(so buying the game basically). Otherwise you can purchase champions separately or with in-game money akin to LoL if you are cruising on the free version. Note that the champion that comes with the free version is top tier, though as a quake game, champions barely matter compared to skill

Other items are purely cosmetic
