Quibi Streaming Service Calls It Quits

The streaming platform has opted to shut down.

Quibi is the little short-form mobile video streamer that could not, as it turns out. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that amid mounting problems, the service has opted to shut itself down. Thus ends a year full of high-flying expectations for the entertainment start-up that raised $1.75 billion in capital.

Earlier in the year, Quibi was being hailed by founder Jeffrey Katzenberg--and many media outlets--as a revolutionary new combatant in the streaming wars, with its emphasis on short-form content specifically geared for mobile devices. But as Katzenberg explained in a call to investors, he was forced to shut down the business due to flagging viewer numbers, disappointing download numbers, and also an ongoing lawsuit from technology firm Eko over the ownership of the company's streaming technology.

As recently as September, Quibi was reportedly exploring options to stay afloat by seeking an acquisition, but as the recent announcement signals, that did not pan out.

The service abruptly shuttering itself leaves in its wake tons of cued-up shows that are now effectively left in pipeline limbo. Shows like the planned Legends of the Hidden Temple reboot are now up in the air, and it would be reasonable to expect some sort of definitive announcement on how these shows might find another lifeline--as well as how to watch seasons of other cult hits that have already been broadcast, like the Quibi season of Reno 911!

I think it would be better when parts of it are sold off and put into the right hands. I mean, if they had like a creepy-pasta type of horror one with short horror ghost stories, like instead of sitting around a campfire telling the stories, you can fire up the app and select a short ghost story.

or short black-mirror type of stories, maybe even interactive.

In the context of short ghost stories etc it could be quite cool! Or a place instead of watching guides on youtube on how to beat games or get through levels etc, a guide can be broken down into many videos and put into a playlist then, so for example you wanted to see a guide on luigis mansion 3, it would be there, and the playlist then would be all of the strategies, levels, bosses etc, and each would be within that 10 min timeline so you aren't having to go through youtube ads, or longplays that could spoil further into the game for you etc

When their big-ticket shows are stuff like a sex doll coming to life, saying things like 'we are all sex dolls until we destroy the patriarchy' in the commercial that is supposed to make you watch the show this news is not surprising.

It bombed because of COVID. Had this released a year before it probably would still be around.

Shutdown mostly due to the litigation. Low viewership and download count has never stopped a silicon valley startup this early in their lifespan.

This is another reminder to all of us would be entrepreneurs that if you use something, make sure you properly pay off the people behind it.

Another streaming service, another failure. This one especially deserved to fail as it was for the ADD Generation.
