Rage Updated Impressions - Multiplatform Demonstrations and Dead City

id Software shows off a bit more of its upcoming action game and confirms a release date for September 2011.

The 2010 QuakeCon event is still going strong in the spacious halls of the Dallas Hilton Anatole, and that means panels, special presentations, and lots and lots of cheap applause in exchange for free T-shirts. One of the most exciting presentations at the show so far has been today's special demo of id Software's Rage, which was shown in the grand ballroom not only on three distinct monitors, but on three different platforms. The leftmost monitor ran the PS3 version of the game, the center monitor ran the PC version of the game, and the rightmost monitor ran the Xbox 360 version of the game (which, incidentally, crashed once).

Roving gangs of bandits will make your life in the wasteland challenging, to say the least.
Roving gangs of bandits will make your life in the wasteland challenging, to say the least.

The idea behind the simultaneous triple demonstration was to show the level of visual quality on all three versions of the game as being comparable while id staff played through the exact same areas, and to the game's credit, all three versions looked virtually identical on a big screen from a seat several rows back, even though we know there will, in fact, be real differences between them (in John Carmack's keynote address this year, the technical officer cited that the console versions of Rage won't have antialiasing on the level of the PC version, for instance).

The demonstration briefly touched on desert exploration--very similar to the content we covered in the press demo at last year's QuakeCon--as well as a visit with the inhabitants of Wellspring and also a sewer battle against the Ghost Clan, a faction of pale-skinned, acrobatic bandits, both being areas we covered at Bethesda's press event this past May.

The demonstration ended with a brief visit to a brand-new area called Dead City, which has been overrun by vicious mutants and from which no one has ever returned. According to lead designer Tim Willits, you visit the area in the game as part of a mission that requires you to scour the zone for some sort of evidence, though as we saw, you'll be in for a fight here. The entrance to Dead City looks like a bombed-out business district, with flattened skyscrapers bent around a shattered freeway overpass, and the rubble offers many places for nasty monsters to hide.

At first, we were attacked by the scrawny, club-wielding mutants we'd seen in last year's demonstration in the Mutant Bash TV area--these weren't much of a threat, and a shotgun shell or two put each of them down rather easily. However, a new group of these little nuisances popped up from another pile of rubble, supported by a much larger mutant carrying what appeared to be an enormous backpack-mounted grenade launcher, which was carried two-handed like a minigun. We kept our distance from the brute, which worked out just fine for it, since it periodically lobbed an explosive round in the air to come raining down on our head. We watched the id staffers skillfully dispatch the lesser mutants and then pull out an assault rifle and shred the grenade launcher mutant with concentrated fire.

And then, of course, there are the mutants.
And then, of course, there are the mutants.

Just when we thought it was safe to take a breath, an even bigger mutant the size of a high-rise came marching out from behind a fallen office building and let out a fearsome roar. The screen then faded to the Rage logo, but the crowd at the presentation apparently liked what they saw and erupted into thunderous applause, second only to the applause they let out when Willits again took the stage and announced, for the first time in id Software's illustrious history, an actual final release date for one of its games: a US ship date of September 13, 2011, and a European ship date of September 15, 2011, for Rage.

Is this going to have multiplayer? What would that multiplayer entail? Co-op only like Borderlands? I would prefer to be able to engage in some sick PVP action if you wanted. Alliances would be a choice.

@TKTOWA Keyboard and mouse on consoles is not a clever idea. Keyboard and mouse are simply superior for control. This gives those with keyboard and mouse a very clear advantage over controllers. This means games would be very unfair to those using controllers (especially in multiplayer) and single player campaigns would be significantly easier using keybaord and mouse. As a result, if you wanted to win, using a keyboard and mouse would become mandatory. And this completely defeats the purpose of owning and playing a console game. Consoles are all about ease of use, fun and pick up and go. Not sitting down on a desk with a keyboard and mouse set up. If you want keybaord and mouse, you have a perfectly good, viable and excellent option . The PC.

@TKTOWA I could just tell you to buy a PC but instead I'll point out that Staples carries PS3 compatible keyboards and I believe there are youtube video's of people getting mice to work with the PS3.

More than anything, I want keyboard and mouse support on PS3. Though FPS have come a long way, the keyboard+mouse setup will always be superior. UT3 did it so it's obviously possible. I see no reason for more developers to do it. Maybe Sony wants cash for controllers? Make Sony mice! I'd buy them!

Why are people talking about Gears of War on a Rage topic? May aswell add my 2 pennies on the graphics matter. Gears of War 3 is pushing the 360?!?! ARE YOU MAD! It couldnt even handle GoW2 with all that graphical pop in and the slow down...hate to see what pushing it actually means :P Rage uses a new engine that renders everything on 1 texture, so there is no pop in anywhere since it loads EVERYTHING at once since technically there is only 1 thing to load. Pretty clever, it will make console games...look nicer. Pop in and long load times plague both 360 and PS3 (it takes 15-25 seconds for example to start a new game of Just Cause 2 on the PS3, it takes under 3 seconds on my PC) so if more companies adopt this idea everyone wins i guess.

@ jordironchetti1 still, that's a first person shooter, not exactly original. Fun and quirky spin yes, but not truly original. My point is that people need to stop complaining that a game isn't original. It's hard to make an original burger, it's still going to have buns, a burger patty and dressings. now what type of buns, what kind of patty and how tasty the dressing are can make an fresh and delicious video game.....wait was i talking about games or food just now....damn now I'm hungry. I'll be back.......

@Fusco1980 : What you said originally was that Gears 2 pushed the limits of the 360...which is not the case at all. Gears 3 might, yeah, but Gears 2 certainly didn't. And you can pretty much toss out any hype that the game devs say, they all claim to push something to it's limit, it's part of the hype rhetoric.

@Max_Wulong what kind of price was that card going to cost you? because that is still a good card, one of the first ones to support DX11. It's not at the tip top, but its close and would run anything you threw at it, as long as u have the other hardware to back it up to.

@rpgnutt The role-playing portion of Borderlands was very prominent, just as prominent as the FPS portion. The level up and points system, the constant upgrading of gear and weapons. The different buffs that were present, the questing and tons of side-missions, granted it didn't do anything innovative with the role-playing, but it took all the major staples one expects in an rpg and did them very well. Same for the FPS part, it didn't do anything drastically new or different, but it set the par with the quality of play, and sheer number of weapons and weapon variants. I'm not saying you have to like it, everyone is intended to an opinion. But I do feel that Rage will be great, mainly because it looks like it is a super-realistic version of borderlands with a more open-ended approach. And I do agree with you in not wanting Rage to be like FO3, honestly I couldn't find any fun in that game at all, I tried playing it several times and just didn't like it, I was wanting it to be like Oblivion to badly.

@Decardcain Rage was in development and shown before borderlands years ago. Rage isn't an rpg it's an action based fps with admittingly some rpg-esque elements like collecting materials/ammo to build/use weapons. To add to what gideonkain said borderlands is average at best. Replayability value does not equal playing the game over with the only difference being the same exact enemies have more health and damage output. That's monotony and the laundry list of problems with that game is too long to tell. If you want to compare graphics take any high quality video of borderlands and compare it to any rage video and you'll see a fairly vast difference not only in graphics but in character animation. The game industry doesn't lack new ideas, it lacks incentive to risk putting money behind new ideas when most people these days are perfectly content with buying the same kinds of games over and over and over. I'm sure you could find plenty of great games if you actually looked or strayed beyond a certain genre/console.

@DecardKane "Tell my why should play rage instead borderlands " Well for starters, Borderlands has as much depth as a bath tub - it is completely unbalanced if your not playing with friends, it has no story what so ever, no character development, to travel to different sections you click on a freaking monitor, iD Software basically invented and revolutionizes the FPS genre every single time they make a game.

@Fusco1980 : Gears 2 push the 360's limits? Wut. There's much much more impressive graphics to be found on that system, and most other games actually have physics worth mentioning. Poor choice of an example, there. ;-)

Yes I agree with most people, Consoles is where developers will find sales potentials and to increase profit. But I'm pretty sure at the same they will provide what we call 'values'. And these values will be gained exclusively by PC owners. And don't worry: even though consoles are really affordable, even PC components are affordable as well. As we don't need SLI setup to crank the graphics to the max. Even single card GPUs are long lasting enough to cater most games. So I agree with @Fusco1980. @santinegrete: DirectX 11 has not been fully exploited yet, but by comparison they are better.

@fusco1980 It's about making money, not supporting the high end PC's. High end PC's are only affordable to those making a lot of money, or those that have serious addictions. Gaming industries are being smart, by catering to consoles, because that's what the majority of us have in our homes.

tell my why should play rage instead borderlands in my opinion borderlands has more coblex and the rpg system gives the game more replayabillity... they seem so similar games ... even the graphics look the same...if we consider that borderlands make its appearance at the last months of 2009 and rage will show up two years later its pretty easy to make the conclusion that the game industry lacks of new ideas...

@Fusco1980 I am terribly sorry for the misinterpretation, my friend. Indeed, many times the extra bit of sacrificed money is well worth the saved labor. I thank you kindly for the complement, my computer appreciates it as well :) On topic, on a respectable level I, too, can agree that it is disappointing in a way when playing a top of the line game, yet only half of one's processing power is being used. If only the other half was able to help with the work load, how great of a display that would be! As such, I can see the lacking points in Rage's visuals. Especially now- let alone in yet another year. Who knows what type of graphical advancements might develop by then! I am certainly looking forward to see. Best regards,

Completely agree with Gyroman665. Consoles play the game, without installing and without the need to upgrade any software and hence, are dominant for game developments and sales.

@Fusco1980: As a half time PC gamer with low resources -SLI and crossfire are dreams for me- I think the reason of companies not releasing games like, for example, the PC punishing Shattered Horizon is because there's few (or very few in my country) people that could have a respectable gaming rig that could run it. That is a barrier for selling it to most consumers, and a company can't stand that in times like these, or even in a system where what matters is profit. Stupid but sincere question: does Directx 11 looks far better than 10?

@naylol Basically its not what you expect. Think, Motorstorm, Fallout 3 and Doom all crammed into an epic game. And I dont know if you have seen any of the videos of the software they use to create this game but its practically a fully handmade game down to the tiniest rock.

Well, at this stage , consoles are pretty much computers dedicated to gaming or media. Developers surely can more easily craft a game that will be supported by multiple platforms, and unless some marketing crap gets in the way of multiplat releases I don't see why they shouldn't try to benefit from the added sales.
