Rebellion finalizes Core buyout

Studio purchased wholesale, although Eidos to retain name and intellectual property.

In June 2003, following disappointing sales of Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness and a very scathing, very public attack on the game by the producers of the movie Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, Eidos Interactive took the franchise away from veteran UK studio Core Design and handed it instead to US-based Crystal Dynamics. It also released a statement, detailing its intention to reevaluate the position of Core within the group, leading to speculation it would be sold or disbanded.

Three years later, during which time an ailing Eidos was itself bought up by SCi Entertainment Group, the situation has finally been resolved. UK outfit Rebellion, just over a month after buying up some of Core's assets, has now finalized its purchase of the rest of the company, including the staff and premises. The move comes after a bit of industry speculation surrounding Rebellion, who earlier this month denied that a possible purchase of Empire Interactive was on the cards.

Rebellion and Eidos have some history, having worked together on Rogue Trooper, and ties between the companies will remain close. Rebellion's newly acquired team will continue to work with Eidos on a currently unnamed new project. The deal will also see Eidos retain the Core Design name and all intellectual property associated with it, although significant releases under the Core banner have been scarce since Angel of Darkness.

Am I the only one that thinks AoD is one of the best Tomb Raider games? #1 Tomb Raider (best story, characters, Lara, levels, music, enemies, bosses, graphical design and voices - not enough weapons, no vehicles and the graphics could've been etter) #2 Angel of Darkness (best graphics, best controls and hottest Lara ever, Lara's voice is good again, ability to kick ass without weapons, use stealth and Lara isn't dead anymore! - no jungle levels and unnessesary graphical, control and game bugs, no vehicles and no dual pistols) #3 Tomb Raider 3 (like the first one but with better graphics, more weapons, use of vehicles etc. - there is a lot of going back and forth in levels to advance in the game, Lara's voice still sucks) #4 Tomb Raider 2 (the Tibet and underwater place were good levels, good weapons, introduces the use of vehicles and changing clothes depending on environment - horrible story and characters, graphics looked worse then that of the first game in most parts of the game, music was crap and the most of the levels were boring and ugly, Lara's new voice is horrible)

What's up with the "does this mean a Tomb Raiders sequel" stuff? Crystal Dynamics is making Tomb Raider games now. So where in Rebellion's newly acquired team (Core) and Eidos working together on a game does "maybe they're making a Tomb Raider sequel come up?" This also brings up the point that Crystal Dynamics also develops the Legacy of Kain games. If the game Rebellion and Eidos is working on happens to be Tomb Raider or Legacy of Kain, then hope that Core has manage to acquire the ability to not suck.

Hmm...interesting. Rebellion did not make a strong start with Rogue Tropper. And Core Design has not been very active since Eidos 'dumped' them from Tomb Raider besides Smart Bomb, the awful puzzle game for the PSP. Maybe this purchase can make Rebellion better. Rebellion is new to the gaming industry and still has some potential.

Good news for both parts; I hope that they can take advantage of the expertise they have, so they can make great games that sell well

Am I the only one who, when reading this article, is amused at the concept 'Rebellion buys Empire'? ;-)

High time they release another Legacy of Kain game... the games are getting better and they story has to be concluded, otherwise it's just disrespectful towards the fans of the series

This basically means no more Core created lara croft games, which is fantastic. Talented people, just couldnt grasp what the public needed from that genre of game, hopefully they can hit their stride with something else.

I hope they're not making a sequel. It's best left to Crystal Dynamics at this point.

They should start making the characters look more lifelike...I know it'd be a change but it might be a change for the better.
