Recent World Of Warcraft Changes Are Part Of "Building An Inclusive And Welcoming" World

Blizzard is offering insight on recent WoW changes that have altered or removed older content the developer says is inconsistent with its values.

World of Warcraft's patch 9.1.5 is currently being tested on the game's public test realm, and each new test build brings more changes to older game content that could be seen as inappropriate or offensive. Now Blizzard is offering insight on why those changes are being made and what fans can expect in the future.

In a new blog post titled "The Evolution of Creative Content in World of Warcraft," the WoW development team says the changes are part of a goal of "building an inclusive and welcoming game world."

"In a game that has thousands of art elements and a word count in the millions, we recognize that these updates will amount to very few total changes overall," the blog post reads. "Nonetheless, we believe these changes are worthwhile. World of Warcraft is meant to evolve over time, and every day, new players from every walk of life and every corner of the world experience our in-game content for the first time. As a team, we want the world they see to stand as an expression of our talent and principles."

Recent changes outlined in the PTR include the removal or alteration of crude or suggestive emotes, name changes for certain items and NPCs, the removal of in-game references to former employees, renamed achievements, and more.

"Goofy jokes and occasional mature innuendos are part of WoW, and probably always will be," the blog post continues. "Still, we want to remain mindful of whether certain elements of that world are welcoming to all players. In short, we want our jokes to be inclusive and not punch down."

Blizzard goes on to clarify that they don't plan to make any alterations to player looks or cosmetics, saying they want players to be able to express themselves. In outlining additional changes that will come post patch 9.1.5, Blizzard says it will be creating an incubus demon which can be added to certain parts of the game to replace the scantily-clad succubus demon model. Warlock players will have the option to summon either the succubus or the incubus through the game's glyph system.

The changes all come in the wake of multiple lawsuits, investigations, and allegations regarding widespread harassment and discrimination towards women at Activision Blizzard. Those allegations have seen numerous Blizzard veterans leave the company, including former Blizzard president J. Allen Brack.

Blizzard recently announced WoW Classic Season of Mastery, which will add seasonal servers to the old-school version of the MMO alongside balance changes.

Activision Blizzard are in a bad way right now, and it is all self-inflicted, but I do have to admit I appreciate the wording used in this response, especially after that horrible response to the use of the Quran. It doesn’t change anything about their current situation, but it does seem a bit more self-aware. I particularly liked that they went farther and spoke about fixing more issues in the game that have aged poorly, though they could have left out the “pity me” part about there being millions of words in the game.

Can always count on Gamestop to give us more lame Blizzard WoW news. Scantily clad Sucubus is all of a sudden too much to handle? No, this is clearly Blizzard giving into something so idiotic it hurts.

It's a sad day on Earth when a lawsuit and crazy women are shaming Blizzard into such silly, idiotic changes that no one even wants, needed, or asked for. Epic fail by the women who are complaining, which I haven't seen any, and even more so by Blizzard.

Band-aids on a bullet wound. WoW is losing out to FFXIV now, and everyone knows Blizzard is the single most toxic development house out there. The magic has evaporated, and everyone knows it.

@Faellin - You ain't even wrong. They're trying SO hard to distract people with this open SJW bait it's actually funny. Unfortunately, the majority of people care more about what's happening in the real world.

@Thanatos2k - Indeed. No one cares about the games' content, especially not a game like WoW that's slowly dying. People want to see what is going to happen to make the Blizzard development environment more welcoming, not the games. Honestly, I'd be surprised if Blizzard weren't just dismantled in a few years. They've clearly outlived their usefulness to Activision.

@YukoAsho: toxic because you're a pansy and can't handle ANYTHING so you have to complain about EVERYTHING? Sounds about right in 2021. But please, go join something that has no such thing as freedom of speech.

@bpmike83: Isn't keeping up that conservative victim complex all the time hard work? Seems exhausting.

What a crock. It was fine for 15 years but suddenly it's not.

I think your company settling for tens of millions of dollars for sexually abusing your employees shows you need to make your company a more inclusive and welcoming place, not your games.

Yet they aren't doing anything to "Building An Inclusive And Welcoming" IRL where it actually matters.

This is all coverup PR speak that does nothing. Censoring a game does not suddenly fix the attrocities they've put their staff through for years.

I don't know what you guys are gibber jabberin' about. This is the most savvy move in the history of gaming! If the game doesn't have any players, there's nobody to be offended! Match point, Blizzard...

Pfft -- new MMO players? No one wants to spawn into a WoW game and immediately be forced to spend hours running into nature nearby to hunt low-level wild animals.

They'd much rather play something new and fresh, Like The New World, where you...uhh... hrm.

Yeah.

I find all these petty reparations more disturbing than what they're supposedly trying to "fix". It's like somethin a sociopath would think is the good thing to do. I guess that really is more "consistent with their values", lol...

So, when are they going to address China's cultural genocide? Oh, right. Addressing that little carbuncle would be a tad more financially risky then removing a few fart emotes.

@sexypoot: Same here. I normally avoid social media because of how toxic, offended and opinionated everyone is. Thank God I had a childhood where people rarely ever got offended. They dealt with things like mature adults, even as children (this generation’s adults handle things worse than children). At least I can look back on the good times. This generation (and the future altogether) isn’t for us, man.
