Red Dead Redemption 2 Boasts Huge Sales At Launch, But GTA 5 Still Beats It

That's a lot of horsepower.

9 Comments

It seemed likely that Red Dead Redemption 2 would be a hit, but Rockstar claims it has surpassed even lofty expectations. The company announced that it achieved $725 million during its opening weekend, making it one of the biggest launches of all time--not just in video games, but in terms of all entertainment.

In the announcement, Rockstar boasted that this is the "single biggest opening weekend in the history of entertainment," outpacing movies like Avengers: Infinity War which made $257 million in its opening weekend. (Of course, movie tickets cost significantly less than a new game at $60-100.)

Now Playing: Red Dead Redemption 2 Has Huge Launch, But GTA 5 Beats It - GS News Update

This puts it in second-place for sales in its first three days to another Rockstar game, Grand Theft Auto V, which achieved $1 billion. But since those first three days started on a Tuesday, it isn't an opening weekend, which is the spin Rockstar is using to boast about Red Dead. Take-Two previously said it expected Red Dead to fall short of GTA5 sales. Other achievements from the big launch include several records for digital sales on PlayStation Network: the most pre-orders, biggest day-one full game sales, and most sales in the first three days.

If you're still on the fence or deciding on a platform, read up on which console performs better, and check out GameSpot's Red Dead Redemption 2 review. "Red Dead Redemption 2 is an excellent prequel, but it's also an emotional, thought-provoking story in its own right, and it's a world that is hard to leave when it's done," wrote critic Kallie Plagge.

Well no shit, GTA almost appeals to every single gamer out there, Red Dead not so much, Westerns are an aquired taste and I'm glad, GTA was and is shrouded by morons and children.

@sephirothswing: They are still some of the best open world games in history, though, no matter how bad the community around them might be (or how bad it has gotten since GTA Online). IV was simply astonishing in 2008 and still is now in many aspects, compared to other non-Rockstar open world games.

@Berserk8989: I definitely agree. GTA Online's community is purely toxic. Grand Theft Auto IV was, and still is, my favorite in the series with Vice City following closely behind.

Well deserved. If you like these type of games I encourage you to buy it.
This is in my opinion the most realistic detailed and immersive world created for a video game.

Games always feel like games, but with RDR2 they were able to make it feel less like one. All because of a living world where characters walk and behave like they should. In this game, there are multiple NPC interactions happening around you at the same time. Small events that you can interact with or dismiss them.

If you think something should be possible to do, it most likely is.

One small detail that surprised me. I was near a road skinning some wolves that had attacked me. As I was doing it a guy passed by and reacted to it complimenting me for the kill.

This is the type of spontaneous interactions that happen around you.

@joalopes:

I completely agree. Absolutely emersed in the world and every so often you notice something that just blows you away.

I was in the hotel in valentine last night and aa I was leaving the room down the corridor, either my movement or the wind blew the curtains as I walked past. It seems an insignificant detail, but it is part of this amazing world they have created

@Prats1993:

I was thinking this exact thing the other day. Best games I have played this year are single player.
