Red Dead Redemption 2 Comes To PC and Google Stadia Next Month

Finally, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online come to PC.

Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to PC and will be released on November 5, 2019. Rumors of a PC version have been floating around for a while now, but Rockstar and parent company Take-Two executives have been very coy in discussions about it. But we now know it really is on the way (as is a Google Stadia version) and with visual improvements and new content.

Rockstar says the PC version of Red Dead 2 will feature improvements to take advantage of the hardware--"a range of graphical and technical enhancements for increase[d] immersion" will be available if you have a capable PC. Screenshots and system requirements for the PC version will be shared on October 9. [Update: As promised, Rockstar has delivered these details and more, detailing the required specs, sharing more about the new content and graphical improvements, and revealing the first screenshots of Red Dead 2 on PC.]

Beyond a better-looking game, there will also be new content in story mode. This will consist of new bounty hunting missions, gang hideouts, weapons, and "more." Red Dead Online will also be included with all of the content available in the PS4 and Xbox One versions.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Steam Version Coming Later

Red Dead 2 will be available through several different PC retailers, but not Steam, at least initially; it'll be released there in December. Pre-orders will begin through the Rockstar Games Launcher on October 9 and will include special bonuses if you purchase by October 22.

Red Dead Redemption 2 PC Pre-Order Bonus Games

Not long after debuting the Rockstar Games Launcher on PC, the company will now have a major game to help push it. While it will not be exclusive to the launcher, it is the place where you'll find the most robust array of pre-order bonuses.

In addition to the free game you can already get by installing the launcher, pre-ordering Red Dead Redemption 2 will net you two free games from the following list:

  • Grand Theft Auto III
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • Bully: Scholarship Edition
  • LA Noire: The Complete Edition
  • Max Payne 3: The Complete Edition

Rockstar also notes that "free upgrades" to Red Dead 2's premium editions are available by pre-ordering; the Special edition and Ultimate edition will each be $20 off their regular prices (international pricing is not available yet). Whichever version of Red Dead Redemption 2 you pre-order through Rockstar, you'll also receive the following pre-order bonuses:

  • Outlaw Survival Kit for story mode
  • War Horse for story mode
  • Treasure map for story mode
  • Cash bonus for story mode
  • 50 gold bars for Red Dead Online

Pre-orders for Red Dead Redemption 2 begin on October 23 through Epic Games Store, Green Man Gaming, Humble Store, GameStop, and other retailers. If you opt to pre-order through those retailers, your bonus comes in the form of 25 gold bars for Red Dead Online.

The Road To Red Dead Redemption 2 On PC

In June 2019, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said launching Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC would be a "layup." He added, "There is no downside to releasing the game on PC."

The first Red Dead Redemption was not released for PC and this was somewhat of a sore spot for Rockstar Games fans on the platform. However, given the massive success of Red Dead Redemption 2, as well as the fact that it has an expansive multiplayer mode in Red Dead Online, a PC release for the sequel has felt like an inevitability.

Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar's previous release, was also made available on PC well after the initial console launch. Its accompanying multiplayer game, GTA Online, has been incredibly lucrative and both Rockstar and Take-Two will no doubt be hoping Red Dead Online performs similarly.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has shipped over 24 million copies, making it one of the most commercially successful games in history. Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 are also two of the best selling PS4 games of this generation, according to NPD. GameSpot's Red Dead Redemption 2 review praised it as an "excellent prequel" with an "emotional, thought-provoking story."

Given that RDR2 is a prequel to RDR1 (I think that's right), I wonder if they do a semi-remastered version of RDR1 for PC sometime in the future if this is successful. I hope so.

What about RDR1 for PC? I won't play 2 without having played 1 first.

@Roman217: you know this is a prequel, right? Maybe they are making a remake of the 1 in the engine of the 2, meanwhile, you don't need to know anything about the first plot to play this one.

@Antarte: That doesn't matter to me. Many times games make significant improvements to game mechanics in the next game (even if prequel) that if you play the earlier games they aren't fun. I don't want my experience of RDR1 to be ruined by getting used to RDR2.

@Roman217: numbers should be banished of games. Only few, very, very few exceptions (came to my mind Baldur's Gate 1 and 2), have sense, and are 'real' continuations. The rest are different games with the same lore. I've started with Fallout 3, when I played Fallout 2 for first time, it was a 'different' pleasure, I never expected the same, they are radically different.

I understand the delay, they sold to current consoles, then a better version to PC and next consoles, as they have done with GTAV, remember? (consoles paying double again).

What I don't understand are... the cries of those "PC haters"... If you really enjoyed a game: Don't you want to have the possibility to re-play it again properly modded? Or to still playing it in the future when your console (or the entire branch) will be no more? You really like so much to depend of a single branch for all? So easy is for a branch to have virtual cattle today?

But worst... many of you have been saying that Uncharted 4 and God of War on PC won't be enjoyable at 30fps... aha... so.. Why aren't you hyped for finally be able to enjoy this game at 60fps?

Love the "worthless" preorder bonuses where developers offer free copies of popular, old games that I already own or online currency for a game that I don't plan on playing online. I'm sure it'll be of some value to others, but this is actually a step lower than useless pre-order in-game item cosmetics or weapons that are useful only for the first level.

Rockstar might have an exemplary reputation on console, but their rep for PC is that they _do_ release amazing games, however, they are usually not optimized well for the PC platform, and many times, the modding community has stepped in to fix and address issues rather than expecting an even lax update schedule post-release.

A lot of console gamers I know can't recommend the game any higher; so I'll probably get the game based on the reputation alone. I like the anti-Steam business move of releasing on a platform at a later date. If I was adamant about only getting the game for Steam, I would return a move like that by not buying the game on my platform of choice until the game price went down; because if you're going to wheel and deal with distributors and prove to those behind 1 platform that you value them less than others, I can do likewise with when I'm willing to part with in order to buy a game from a company that partakes in such a business practice.

Regardless, looking forward to seeing what all the hub-bub is about. HowLongToBeat boasts _impressive_ numbers for how much content the game has, but doesn't hint at whether a lot of it is redundant.

If I remember correctly, the initial launch of the PC version of GTA V was really buggy; I already own this on PS4, but these games I get both versions. I will wait for the reviews of the PC performance.

@dmblum1799: Single-player was fine on PC as far as I can remember. It was online that had issues.

The best part was when they lied about it pretending like they weren't making it for PC.

@bigbluebustn: Pretty sure they said there were "no plans" - when clearly that was a lie because they were definitely working on it.

@Thanatos2k: Can you link where Rockstar said “no plans” cus I can’t find anything and don’t remember them saying that. Pretty sure they never gave a definitive answer.

@doomsdayhell01: Are you being sarcastic because this "issue" is a meme at this point. People boycotting games over free launchers that only launch when you decide to play the game, oh my word get a real problem.

Oh hell yes! I quit playing on PS4 right before John.....well, it doesn't matter when I quit.

I can't freaking wait to experience this on PC. I just wish the Steam version wasn't coming later, as that is what I would prefer, but the Rockstar store versions come with awesome bonuses. Max Payne 3 and LA Noire for me!

I was expecting this game to be better, or on par, with Red Dead Redemption, but from all reviews and comments, it seems like they didn't manage to. I'll probably buy it in a few years, I'm not in a rush to play it.

I will say though there is potential for this to be better than the console versions. I felt the controls on PS4 were too clunky and necessitated the auto aim system, which made the actual combat easier than it should be. Major room for improvement there.

Game was more immersive than it was fun. I don't think I have any interest buying this again.
