Red Dead Redemption 2 Gameplay Trailer Released; Camp, Activities, And More Detailed

Wicky wicky wild wild west.

Rockstar Games has finally shown off a gameplay trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2, giving the many eager fans out there the first opportunity to see all the new mechanics and what playing the sequel will be like when it launches in October. The video provides a deeper look at the game world, how players can interact with the Van der Linde gang, build a reputation for main character Arthur Morgan, and much more. Check it out above and continue readying for a full breakdown.

"In the late 1800s, America was evolving, on its way to becoming the most powerful country in the world," a voice over in the trailer states. "New immigrants arrived, thriving outposts became towns, and civilization was spreading into the huge, wild, and lawless frontier. With Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar Games aims to create a living world that's not simply open, but deeper, more interactive and detailed than ever, combining action, storytelling, and gameplay in new ways as you live, ride, and fight to survive as an outlaw in a notorious gang."

Now Playing: Red Dead Redemption 2 - Gameplay Reveal Trailer

As shown in the trailer, Red Dead Redemption 2 features a vast American landscape that encompasses everything from harsh mountain trails and dense forests to untamed swamplands, sweeping deserts, rugged livestock towns, and cities that are undergoing the process of modernization. Players will be able to move between these locations seamlessly and each one provides a variety of activities and missions to engage with.

As Arthur Morgan, you roll with the Van der Linde gang, who are being pursued across America by Lawmen intent on snuffing out the age of outlaws. The way players interact with fellow gang members is key to Red Dead Redemption 2's narrative and its gameplay, so they are always available to talk to, either for general chit-chat or to get missions and activities from. You can also take your compatriots in crime out with you to hunt, go drinking, or rob.

The Van der Linde gang has a dedicated camp that evolves over time. Players will frequently return to the camp to take on missions and activities, as well as build their relationships with other members of the gang, as previously mentioned. Here, the group can eat, sleep, perform chores, and play games together. The camp needs to be maintained and each member of the gang is involved in that process. For upkeep, the camp needs a regular supply of provisions, be it food or cash. Although players can choose not to contribute and leave it to others, helping out will lead to Arthur being rewarded for his efforts. Interestingly, camp locations will change as the story progresses, which makes sense given that they're outlaws on the run.

Red Dead Redemption 2 also lets players interact with the majority of other characters in the game world, and these interactions will change depending on the situation and context. Since you're an outlaw, you can choose how to approach the world, either behaving like an upstanding member of society or choosing to cause trouble. Depending on the approach the world and the people, around you will react accordingly. In the trailer Arthur is shown calling out to a passing rider, smack talking tough guys, and reasoning with a sheriff. He intimidates a witness into silence by beating him, and also talking someone else down from getting violent.

The horses are another big pillar of Red Dead Redemption 2's gameplay, as they are as much a companion for Arthur as it is a transportation option. As with the first game, wild horses can be tamed and ridden, but this time will behave differently depending on their breed. Some may be better suited to traversing certain terrain, while others may get spooked easier when around action. To build a bond with horses, players are able to feed them and groom them, and if they're upset, you can ease their stress and calm them too. As the player, and Arthur, deepens the bond with a horse, its stamina and speed develops, and it also becomes easier to calm it.

Needless to say, horses are also pretty handy for carrying equipment. Saddlebags can be utilized to hold extra weapons, killed animals, and pretty much anything else that Arthur isn't able to stuff into his pockets.

Arthur, who is a senior member of the Van der Linde gang and, as a result, has the confidence of its leader, Dutch, joined the gang when he was a boy and treats its members as family, inspiring deep loyalty from him. Given that the life of an outlaw is all that he's known from a young age, he's desperate to protect his lifestyle and his family, and make sure they're taken care of. Despite being an outlaw, the player can define how honorable Arthur is through actions. The way they choose to approach missions and activities, as well as their general conduct in daily life in the open-world will dictate the level of honor Arthur has. This, in turns, opens up different opportunities and has varying consequences.

In terms of shooting and combat, shooting and fighting have been improved to make combat feel "deep and engaging at all times." Guns now have unique characteristics with realistic reload and recoil so the action feels grounded.

Up until now Rockstar has provided precious few details on Read Dead Redemption 2's gameplay, opting instead to release three cinematic trailers that deliver some insight into the story of the game and set the mood for it. Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place in America in the year 1899, at the end of the wild west era. Lawmen have begun hunting the last remaining outlaw gangs, killing off those that don't surrender.

"After a robbery goes badly wrong in the western town of Blackwater, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee," Rockstar explained. "With federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation massing on their heels, the gang must rob, steal and fight their way across the rugged heartland of America in order to survive. As deepening internal divisions threaten to tear the gang apart, Arthur must make a choice between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang who raised him ... Red Dead Redemption 2 is an epic tale of life in America at the dawn of the modern age."

The story follows outlaw Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang as they fight for survival by robbing and stealing their way across the heart of America. A previous trailer confirmed that the first Red Dead Redemption's protagonist, John Marston, will make an appearance.

After delays, Rockstar's parent company Take-Two has said Red Dead Redemption 2's release date won't change again, and it will launch on October 26. Currently it is set for release on PS4 and Xbox One. Although a PC version hasn't officially been confirmed, a programmer working on the game has indicated that Read Dead Redemption 2 could come to PC.

Rockstar's last major game, Grand Theft Auto V, was released on PC and has seen massive sales, so much so that Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said it would be unrealistic to expect Red Dead Redemption 2 to have similar sales to GTA V. Nevertheless, the company is confident in what the game will achieve, saying it is "yet another creative milestone" for Rockstar and that Red Dead Redemption 2 aims to "redefine our industry" and "captivate audiences around the world."

No thanks. Knowing Rockstar and how they handled GTA V, the online portion of the game will completely overshadow the single player experience within the first week and all of us solo gamers will be left with no updates and no new content unless we plug up an ethernet cord and partake in the online nonsense that is GTA Online, soon to be Red Dead Online, with flying horses that shoot laser beams out of their eyes and Horse Cards microtransactions and every lobby will be filled with little kids or stoned teenagers who think they're cool.

Why set so late in the days of the West? Set the time earlier, make it more raw and wild. Also knowing rockstar there will be plenty of shops taking sharkcards.....

@EliOli: Yeah, you wouldn't need the 'dead eye system'. We have a mouse and can aim.

@hornspiller: Don't "need" it, but I would still want it. Dead Eye is fun at times, it's like playing the John Woo's Stranglehold (Great game if you haven't played it), you can go the whole game without bullet time (Despite forced scenes) without issue, but it is cool to use it.

I could never get into these ‘fantasy’ type games in an unrelateable world. Fantasy, westerns, sci-fi, middle earth, anime, etc. I enjoyed Far Cry 5 strangely enough though. It holds more realism to me. Yes it’s over the top and wacky at times, but it’s in a more familiar world which I enjoy.

I’m at an easy pass here.

@Sevenizz: And yet, just the other day you were looking forward to updates to Sea of Thieves.

Also, western is not fantasy. At all. It is a real period of history. Rockstar do not do any fantasy-themed games.

@good_coop89: He can never get into fantasy type world because Phil's cock is into his a$$. he is just salty cuz Rockstar has some exclusivity deal with Sony. If they had it with Xbox, he would be sucking off whole Rockstar employees too.

@Sevenizz: to each his own. I don't categorize this as fantasy as much as historic. Fictional characters but based on a real time in our history. I seriously tell you that you're missing out. But you probably really like call of duty and racing games and I grew apart from those. Still with you on Far Cry. 5 was pretty damn good! Can't wait for Battlefield 5 too which as well is part of our past history brought back to life.

Game looks great. Massively annoying and immersion breaking voiceover to the video though.

Alexa, ramble on patronisingly about RDR2 and basic gameplay systems for an hour please

None of my worries covered.
- Will snake bites be extremely dangerous?
- Will weapons and ammo be very limited?
- Will hunting and selling be worth shit?
- Will health regenerate in 2 seconds?
- Will stuff like heat, water, sandstorms play any role?
- Will NPC's be aimless bystanders?

Looks like this will be another interactive Western movie, not the Western simulation

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: Czech out red dead redemption 1 and best the piss out of it before this comes out. It just got a reskin for 4k to upgrade an old console classic. Seriously one of my favorite games. Late in the games when your robbing stuff you don't need to hunt. Early in the game you'll hunt everything you can for the fun of it and sell pelts for new guns and upgrades. Snakes weren't horrible. I don't recall health regeneration but I recall dying more times than in some games. Ammo can be bought so it's only as limited as not looking for it. Weather does change they say but I doubt it will he life or death or effect much other than looking spectacular

@alex33x: Would'a could'a should'a. But if you want to cowboy properly you need a Pro or an X. I primarily game on consoles (I own two of each current gen, so I can game online with the wife) because most of my favourite games this gen aren't even on PC, RDR2 seems to be joining the lot. I can't remember which colour I preordered, blue or green case- but I am amped the eff up and every day before launch is agony.

@dr_vancouver: I'm the same. 2 ps4s (1 pro). Can't get my wife on the PC to game and so I don't have to build a 2nd crazy priced rig for her. Also can't convince her that we need a sexboxoneX for 4k movies. So for now 2 TVs adjacent living rooms everything is bought digital on ps4. (Only 1 4k TV anway).

I do have to agree with Alex'and not just because we have the same name. Neither Red Dead in the past came out on PC and they almost didn't do GTAV on the PC. It should be done this time.

The game looks fantastic considering the footage shown was on a console. The animation is quite updated and looks great. Look at the train scene and the characters response and details, then you will know what m talking about. They didn't even mention RDR online so expecting fully fleshed out campaign with a rich storyline.

Now people bitching about it looks the same, did you expect a western setting game look like cyberpunk? Story will be different, world is already looking 1000 times better than Other open world games and you can see there's depth in the world's AI and characters.

2nd type of people are those who are "PC elitists" bitching "oh this should come to PC". I wanted it too but guess what not gonna happen until rockstar officially announce it. That doesn't mean you should talk down a game that is getting better with every reveal. If you can afford a $1000 graphics card I hope a $200 console is chump change to experience exclusives that never come to PC and play titles like these which come very late on PC.
