Red Dead Redemption 2 PC Crashes: Try This If You're Having An Issue [Update]

You'll want to try out DirectX 12, Safe Mode, and updated drivers to solve the problem.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has just launched on PC, but many players are facing issues of getting it to run reliably. The game has been subject to crashes, sending players back to desktop--myself included. In my experience, I would either get the "exited unexpectedly" message from the Rockstar Launcher or a critical error message from Windows when either loading into the story mode or a few seconds into gameplay. Rockstar hasn't yet released any patch or much in the way of official guidance, but here are two possible fixes if you're encountering Red Dead 2 crashes. It's a major pain, especially for those who have been anticipating the game for a long time.

Update: A Rockstar Games Launcher update was released on Tuesday that addresses some of the problems, so ensure that is up to date if you're encountering any issues--this resolved issues for at least one of us here at GameSpot. Additionally, Rockstar has followed this up with a new patch on Wednesday for the game itself, though it has not yet released patch notes detailing what changes it makes. It also has acknowledged the problems on Twitter, which you can see below. The original story follows.

Now Playing: We Played Red Dead Redemption 2 On PC

I was able to get the game running stably after a few tweaks. If you get a crash, the Rockstar Launcher will ask if you want to run the game in Safe Mode; you can do this then tweak your graphics settings back to what you wanted. Granted, you'll have to restart the game again to apply certain graphics options. One option you'll want to have set is for the game to use the DirectX 12 renderer--by default, Red Dead 2 runs on the Vulkan API.

A third step isn't so much a solution as it is just good practice: update your video card's drivers. Nvidia users should download and install GeForce driver version 441.12 since it's specifically tuned for RDR2 and the most recent software for Nvidia GPUs. AMD users will want to do the same and install the latest graphics drivers, Radeon software version 19.11.1. Rockstar has acknowledged the situation and offer driver updates as a solution, too. Additionally, it's suggested to make sure Windows launches the game with "Run this Program as Administrator" and "Disable Fullscreen Optimization" set.

It's hard to say which one of these are the definitive solution, but if you're encountering crashes in the same manner, we suggest you follow these steps. Your mileage may vary as every PC is different and it's not yet clear what exactly is causing the crashes. I'm currently running a PC with the following specs: Intel Core i7-7700K, Nvidia RTX 2080, 16GB RAM, and a 2TB m.2 NVMe SSD. I cannot speak to whether or not there are other issues that might be specific to AMD setups.

For more information on the situation, you can read our story the Red Dead 2 PC crashes people have been encountering. If you're up and running the game stably, be sure to check out our previous coverage below.

Another problem could be apps that has an overlay. I had ReShade installed previously and had to disable it to make the game work properly. My brother also had a problem but in his case it was RivaTuner that was causing problems with the game. After disabling it his game worked properly. I would advise disabling any software that has overlays, or disabling the overlays in the apps if possible.

No issues at all on my end with either the launcher or the game. Averaging 80-90 FPS with a 2080 at 1440p at max balanced settings. Loving it so far.

Charging so much money for a title that is basically in a BETA state on release is poor showing by RockStar. Making the release a public BETA and incrementally fixing issues is just shoddy.

Also, make the devs play the game on a minimum spec PC. It might give them context for the much needed optimisations.

@maralzo: great games should be playable in as much platforms as possible. Even great exclusive games like The Last of Us run in in at least 2 platforms (maybe 3 in PS5 future). No gamer or dev can afford one platform for one game anymore. Not even Nintendo.

Pc Master Race: crickets*

There will always be a good number of people that like to come home, plop in a game and not give a seconds thought as to whether it will work right. Ahem, console players.

@XventureMN: You take the PC elitists too seriously bro, yea from time to time we gotta put up with BS like this but once people get this game running properly on PC it's gonna absolutely obliterate the consoles in performance and quality, it's not that hard to beat 1080p sub-30fps lmao. To each his own man, I enjoyed the PS4 version of RD2 very much. The thought of being able to play on my pc again is an easy buy for me once I hear news of the kinks finally being ironed out.
