Those eager to get an idea of what to expect from Red Dead Redemption 2 don't have much longer to wait. Just ahead of the game's release date, RDR 2 reviews will start to appear online this Thursday, October 25, at 4:01 AM PT / 7:01 AM ET, Rockstar Games has confirmed. That's 12:01 PM in the UK. If you live in Australia, you can start reading reviews for RDR 2 at 10:01 PM AEST. [Update: The embargo has now passed, and you can read our thoughts in our Red Dead 2 review. For a broader look, check out our review roundup.]

Red Dead Redemption 2 itself launches at midnight local time on October 26, so there isn't much time between when reviews begin to show up and when you can play the game for yourself. You can expect to see and hear much more about the game once the review embargo lifts.

Now Playing: Red Dead Redemption 2 - RDR Full Story And Character Recap

Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar's first game built from the ground up for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (GTA V was initially released on PS3 and Xbox One before later launching for the new systems). A prequel to 2010's Red Dead Redemption, the sequel puts you into the cowboy boots of an all-new character, Arthur Morgan, who is a member of Dutch Van der Linde's gang. You can expect to see a number of familiar faces as your gangmates, including RDR 1 protagonist John Marston.

A lot of the discussion around Red Dead Redemption 2 recently has related to the allegations of "crunch" and other overly difficult working conditions at Rockstar Games. The studio has since stated that it doesn't force its employees to work overtime.

To refresh your memory about the story of the previous game, you can take a look at our Red Dead Redemption recap or watch the video above. Also be sure to check out our Red Dead Redemption 2 impressions for more information.

Look, if someone can convince me that the incessant long, boring pony rides of holding (or worse, tapping) down the button are gone, then I'll buy it.

it's going to get solid 10s and 9s across the board like every rockstar game -- not that every rockstar game deserves the scores and praise it receives. gta iv was lackluster and red dead 1 was certainly one of the most over rated game i have ever played.

@Xristophoros: I agree though replaying Red Dead 1 on Xbox one X is a heck of a lot better than what it was like at release. Smooth and stunning. I agree about GTA IV though as only the DLC for that game was truly excellent for single player. GTAV has a pretty amazing single player experience though with a lot of variation and excellent characters you get to swap between.

I like when developers/publishers are confident about their product, Santa Monica Studio with God of War is a good example, Rockstar isn't.

@gzaface: lol.. You REALLY believe Rockstar isn't confident about their product? Come on, let's be realistic here. And while God of War is indeed a masterpiece, the "dad of war" or "walking sim" complaints ran rampant. The only bad thing anyone has had to say in regards to RDR2 is "omg the devs are working too many hours".

Good attempt at being edgy, though.

@ClericIdola: I'm kind of glad to hear people complain about the "walking sim" that is GoW. GoW has been my favorite franchise since the first one, but I'm having a helluva time getting into this one. It's so slow!

@93ChevyNut: Felt the same just overrated nonsense. Might make an OK Netflix movie but as a game it is terrible in latest iteration. Feels too much like an interactive movie with bolt on fight sequences.

Apparently the babysitting crap is due to the staff having babies or something and being all protective and luvvy duvvy so they subjected that torture in game to the player.

@ClericIdola:

GoW is excellent to be fair and anyone that didn't enjoy it probably didn't play it.

I think it is more likely reviews are held back for spoilers more than anything else. From what I've seen and heard so far, this could be amazing, but for sure some will try to knock it somehow.

@barcaazul: That's good explanation of the embargo of the reviews until on day before release, but..... does that mean they care about the players and not only about the money?

I hope the game is going to be good, but for an extensive game like this, they have showed very little, and many of that little isn't greatness by itself (taking baths, ride horses, so many horses types), i'm pretty sure the media is going to acclaim (alas BotW, CoD4BO, ACO) this game but that doesn't mean it's really good.

@gzaface:

Well there are several ways to look at it. Yes they have probably invested huge amounts of money in the development. However they make worlds that are great to play in.

Sometimes not knowing every detail is better to experience than to see up front. The game looks amazing and the previews have been glowing about the game. You can always wait for the reviews of course. I will be really surprised if it isn't a really good experience.

Only Rockstar would allow reviews to be released a day before official game release, they're like "go ahead, it'll only add fuel to the already frenzied hype".

Ubisoft be like: "

If it wasn't Rockstar, I'd be a bit worried about a 'day before' embargo
