Red Dead Redemption 2 Sales Slowing Down As Online Mode Leaving Beta Soon

Rockstar's open-world western on PS4 and Xbox One is seeing sales slow down

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a huge hit, though sales appear to be slowing. Take-Two Interactive, which owns developer Rockstar Games, announced today that the open-world western has now shipped 24 million copies.

That's up from the 23 million figure that Take-Two announced in November. Growth for the title seems to be slowing. Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped 17 million copies right at launch, with a further six million coming by November. One million copies shipped since then is impressive but it's on a slower pace than before.

Red Dead Redemption 2 also makes money from Red Dead Online's microtransactions. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed on an earnings call that Red Dead Online will exit beta during the current quarter, so it should happen soon. Red Dead Online launched in November as a beta, and it has remained in beta since then with Rockstar supporting it with new content regularly.

The signs are looking good for Red Dead Online to continue to be a huge success, as Zelnick said Red Dead Online is performing better than GTA Online over similar periods of time after release. "We have very high expectations for that title going forward," Zelnick said. This is specifically related to various engagement metrics that Zelnick did not expand on. He did add that Rockstar learned a lot from the release of GTA Online, lessons that were applied to RDR Online.

A PC edition of Red Dead Redemption 2 is rumored, but nothing is confirmed at this stage. Whatever the case, launching on PC would presumably help improve sales, which might be what Take-Two is looking for given sales of the game on PS4 and Xbox One are slowing.

Take-Two also announced in its earnings report today that Rockstar's previous game, Grand Theft Auto V, has now shipped an astonishing 110 million copies sold. It was also confirmed that NBA 2K19 has now shipped 9 million copies.

@JustinGoSka: It may still, if next gen consoles are around the corner, you could easily see a GTA V move, where a year and a half later it comes out enhanced for next gen and PC. Or it could simply hit PC around the holidays this year. Never know.

@thelostscribe: after gta v its really hard imagine why rdr2 wouldnt come on pc. back during rdr pcs were kinda struggling and rdr was one time investment so maybe they chose not to spend resources. but now they have their p2w money maker ready for grinding

perhaps theyre even considering making their own launcher. rdr2 would be pretty good attraction

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: I think they use the starve tactic. Get all the money they can from consoles, then dump it onto PC after they think they've reached their peak selling point. Plus, they really optimized GTA V for PC, so they may just want to make sure the game runs well and is able to draw people with all the extra graphics options and the like.

Not sure why they wouldn't though, GTA V did well on PC from what I know.

To be honest, I haven't really played RDR 2 Online, but I've put a ton of time into the single player. I'm not a huge fan of griefing and I heard it was pretty bad for awhile. Now I hear it's leveled out. I'll have to get on and give it a try.

It's great to see Rockstar's hard work really paid off, they had been working on RDR2 for around 10 years. 24 million is a huge pay off for that.

Completely agree, I think it's fantastic.

I tried online a while back and was put off by the lack of talking to interact with people. The single player game was so interactive, it felt empty in comparison. I also suffered some griefing as well and will jump in one I get 100%

Completely agree. The single player was just amazing in my view. The companion app tells you how many days and hours now and in around 180 hours, and will worth the money.

Even now I still find random events

I have bored-quit RedDead2 TWICE NOW..

I blame myself as I was so miserable in RedDead1 once I crossed the river into Mexico.

so repetitive & shhoting on a stage coach or on a train was just stale..

BUT I do hope RedDeadOnline has good modes like GTA online..

*My fav GTA Online is the Jet fighter VS the dirtbike.. so much fun on either side..

@sippio: I agree. RDR2 was horrible. I really cant believe that people like it so much. I had to stop playing it, couldnt take it anymore. So tedious and boring.

And I was a huuuuge fan of the original.

@sippio: Red Dead 1 was Red Dead Revolver. Red Dead Redemption is the 2nd game.

@sippio: Learning how to fast travel increased my enjoyment of RDR 1 exponentially. I loved the world and the detail, but traversing it back and forth a hundred times did get tiresome. Fast travel really helped with that.

I've loved RDR 2, I think the world is much more engaging and diverse than RDR1. That said, I can understand why some people may find it boring. I just ended up really loving it.

I think it is a masterpiece in gaming. I have been playing since day one and only not long ago finished everything. I have spent 180 completely enjoyable hours in that time, admiring the world, the random encounters and investigating strange goings on. Even now I find paths and things I haven't been before.

I know it's not for everyone, and feel sorry that it didn't bring them the same experience I have had. For me its the game of this gen, and there have been some fantastic games this gen, but it's a world I'm not ready to leave, and I'm at 92% and looking to get 100.

@barcaazul: God how?? There is like nothing to do besides completely boring, repetitive missions and hunting and fishing. The world just seems to empty to me.

I started playing Skyrim again recently and was amazed at how I forgot what real sense of exploration is and how alive the world really can be..

@barcaazul: RDR2 has definitely been one of those rare games where I just enjoy RPing being in the world. I'll just wander around, end up in a town, get in a tussle in the local saloon after partaking in games and beverages. Then running out and setting up camp, cooking a meal and brushing out the horse. Most other games it's always seemed like a chore to maintain, but Rockstar hit a perfect balance for me.

The story is incredible too, and even though it's got some unprecedented interaction with fellow outcasts, I wanted more because the characters are that intriguing to me. I will say sometimes I feel that there is so much interaction, major characters don't get quite the attention they should have in terms of history and overall story, but it is still a history I want to know and characters I want Arthur to interact with. No other game like it in that sense for me.

Yeah the same for me. I don't want to leave the world it's so full of life. So many things that you notice now even, just looking for stuff that you missed first time around.

For me its complete immersion in the charges and world. Random encounters like clean members seeing themselves on fire or brewing shine. Finding new animals and birds. I just find it amazing.
