Recently, Elixir Studios, a UK-based development house founded by Theme Park cocreator Demis Hassabis, opened its doors to the public and revealed details of its upcoming strategy game named Republic.

The game is based on the old Junta board game, and it gives players the choice to take on one of five different roles: politicians, businessmen, criminals, religious leaders, or generals. Republic takes place sometime in the 1990s and focuses on the fall of the Soviet Union and its neighboring republics. It's the players' task to oust the leaders of the small country of Novistrana by building up political power, influencing the people, garnering strong military forces, or by using Gestapo tactics like brainwashing, blackmailing, and so on.

Fifty towns and cities are included in the game, and their level of detail is incredible. Republic's engine, called the Infinity Engine, is capable of pushing in excess of 20 million polygons onto the screen. This attention to detail is vividly portrayed in the attached screenshots, none of which are pre-rendered.

We'll have more on this ambitious game from Elixir in the future. Republic has no release date yet.
