Resident Evil 4 Remake Revealed, Releases In March 2023

My journey to play through the Resident Evil franchise for the first time through remakes continues.

The June 2022 PlayStation State of Play kicked off with a banger, revealing a remake of Resident Evil 4 is coming to PS5 on March 24, 2023. While the stream focused on PS5, the game is also coming to other platforms, including Xbox Series X|S and PC. The reveal was immediately followed by more Resident Evil news, as Resident Evil Village for PSVR2 was announced.

The Resident Evil 4 remake announcement was accompanied by a trailer for the game, showcasing how the 2004 action horror game has been updated aesthetically. Unfortunately, we don't get much idea as to how it's been changed mechanically. The trailer is embedded below.

Now Playing: Resident Evil 4 Remake Teaser Trailer | Sony State of Play June 2022

In a PlayStation Blog, Capcom promotion producer Edvin Edsö said, "[Resident Evil 4 Remake] is being developed to achieve state-of-the-art quality for a survival horror suitable for 2023, while preserving the essence of the original game. We aim to make the game feel familiar to fans of the series, while also providing a fresh feeling to it. This is being done by reimagining the storyline of the game while keeping the essence of its direction, modernizing the graphics, and updating the controls to a modern standard."

The blog post goes on to describe the set-up for RE4 Remake, which follows all the same beats of the original RE4, so it's not immediately clear what about the game is changing in this remake. The trailer does seem to hint at a spookier vibe, so perhaps RE4 Remake will be a more survival horror take on the more action-y horror RE4. But we'll have to wait and see as to whether that's the case.

I like the remakes, but I'd rather see code veronica. RE4 is less horror more action, downhill of RE franchise, not a bad game itself, it just aint the best horror game(which I read in a GS article that it is) not even top 100 if I have to say so myself. But this remake might make this game some justice on that department.

I get that they remake the old games, but RE4 was already modern 3rd person. Where is RE1 remake?

@ember_to_flame: Honestly, don't think there is going to be one of RE1, because there's an argument to be made that they already did with the HD remaster of the remake of the original from 2002.

I don't even think this game needs a remake...it's just a cash grab......I've only just played it in the last few years....albeit I did play through it 3 times....that's how great and fun it was.

This game was so awesome.....I really think they will be hard pressed to equal it. They are taking a big chance remaking a game of this caliber, that still looks great and plays so well.

They'll probably even get rid of the President's daughters jiggling:)

I do agree....Code: Veronica should have been remade instead.

This being another RE remake, the real question is: how much content is Capcom cutting out?

@knifebeater: I would hope that this isn't such a shot-for-shot remake content could feel like it's missing. I want new content, some of which is recognizable as a reimagining of an area or sequence in the original RE4.

RE4 was an ambitious game for its time, so I have my doubts that Capcom will keep everything intact. It's probably going to get content cut off and most likely censored as well. The original game still plays pretty well so I'm confused why RE4 gets a remake and not Code: Veronica.

@cboye18: When Capcom released a fan survey a while back, one of the questions was for what remake we wanted next. RE4 was one of the options. In all likelihood people chose that one more than any other options.

Very exciting.
Although I hope they don't lean so hard into the survival horror this time.
i.e. not lean as hard into it as RE2 Remake.
One of the best things about RE4 was its combat flow.
It felt deliberate, arguably even slow, but it was so smooth, and felt great.
The melee attacks drew you into the action, like Glory Kills from Doom Eternal.

People like to say RE4 wasn't horror, they like to say it's a 100% full-on action game,
but I think that's low-resolution bandwagon thinking.
While it was far more action than any RE game before it,
it was still more survival horror than action, in many ways.
Horrific enemies with one-hit-kill moves, extremely tight situations that can take several do-overs, light puzzle elements, strategic ammo use (with magnums), can't buy ammo, can only buy one health item, able to run away from almost everything, many situations where you're clearly meant to, resource /treasure hunting, knife reliance.
Especially back in 2005 when no one knew the tricks and secrets.
The way we play this game has been hyper optimised over the past 17 years.
If you can find videos from back then,
most people looked like they were playing the game with one hand.

We actually have quite a lot of survival horror games these days, believe it or not.
I really hope RE4 Remake doesn't just turn into another running-away simulator.
Besides, it doesn't have the level design to do it well. At least the original didn't.

@naryanrobinson: The thing I liked about RE4 was that you can't shoot and walk at the same time. It feels antiquated nowadays but to make quick decisions to either fight or flight was quite thrilling. The ability to do both in the games afterwards made the gameplay lose tension imo.

@cboye18: Shooting gallery mechanics. A lot of people failed to understand that was a deliberate design decision.

@cboye18: Exactly. Couldn't have put it better myself.
But younger players will whine if they do it these days.
They'll say it's not realistic you can't aim and shoot at the same time.
When in fact it's the exact opposite of realistic to line up a head shot while running.

So I'm going to get this game, hopefully expecting them to get the message that I'm also with RE Code Veronica getting this treatment.

No doubt I am thrilled to be getting a new RE. But man, my only complaint is that it is not instead RE Code Veronica. That game is long overdue for a ground up remake. But RE4 will have to do, I guess!

Make no mistake I will play this game and likely enjoy it immensely. However I can't help but wonder why, the other remakes are old dated PSX games with fixed cameras, so I get remaking them for a modern audience.

Whether as Resi4 holds up remarkably well and is playable on all modern platforms. The VR version of the OG released last year with stellar reviews too showing it aged like wine not milk. If you ask me Veronica needed this treatment over 4.

Looks like it's going to be more horror but I dunno, they're playing with fire with this one.

@RSM-HQ: No complaining from me on the remake, but I agree RE:CV needs some attention. Replaying the Code Veronica Xbox 360 HD version on a 120 in. projector screen right now. Still an enjoyable experience.

@ticklemepink: RECV is all I've been claiming about since I saw how they managed with RE2 remake. Not 3, not this one. CV.

I'm not taking a piss on any remake, just to be clear.

@santinegrete: I agree with you but still found both remakes to be excellent. They are similar in terms of game mechanics and graphical style. Re3 remake if I recall correctly drew some criticism due to being full price and kind of on the short side. I actually found it to be a pretty good length, and still better than most games priced the same way.

@Sam3231: RE3make's advertising explicitly stated the game would be much larger with a far more expanded city section to explore, so in this case the criticism is warranted.

@santinegrete: As a comparable to RE4, RE3make played better though. If any play style would fit 4, it would be RE3make's. If RE4make was essentially just RE2make set in Spain, I'd be royally pissed. RE2make was nice and all, but if this is supposed to be a remake of RE4, then I WANT RE4 damn it.

I loved to play RE 4 but the controls were screwy for me. I did not like RE4 for PC which was terrible. I hope the controls will be better than the PS2 or PC versions.

@lonewolf1044: the ubisoft port of RE4 was a disaster. But the RE4 remaster is alright, and they throw it in capcom bundles in HB. If you miss it, it is a great way to try it, with functional mouse aiming I mean.

Nice. They are finally remaking it.

However, there is something about these post RE7 games I find absolutely soulless and boring. Like the graphics are too dark.

They are going to ad next gen nonsense like holding down a button gauge to interact. Whatever they do just try to be a shiny remake and that's it? This is probably the least necessary remake.

My body is ready!!!!

Even though I would have loved for them to release a Code: Veronica remake instead more Resident Evil is always a good thing in my books.

I will say this however, of all of the remakes I am expecting this one to be less of a jump than the others. RE4 was the first foray into the over the shoulder 3rd person camera view and in many ways it could be argued pioneered that approach in the videogame genre.

As much amazing things RE4 did for gaming it was in a sense the beginning of the downward trend of the genre into a more action based title rather than what it originally started out as; survival horror.

It will be interesting to see what changes the team make to this next entry, though.

Hopefully it has the same impact the original did all those years ago.

@videogameninja: I’m kinda excited for this one because it’ll sort of be a new experience for me. Resident Evil 1, 2, 3 and Code Veronica (originals and remakes) I’ve played countless times. I love good old fashioned RE survival horror and puzzles. I played through RE4 once and don’t remember much about it. I always say I’m in the minority when I say I didn’t like RE 4 at all. Like you said, it was the start of the downward trend for the series into a more action based genre. I didn’t like that at all. Don’t get me wrong, RE 4 was a great game, I just didn’t think it was a great RE game at all. However this one looks like it’s re imagining the original and making something different, maybe more akin to classic RE. Either way, it’s Resident Evil and I am totally in, one way or another. Been a fan since 1998!
