Resident Evil 5 Gets Steamworks Instead of Games for Windows Live, New Content

[UPDATE] Capcom clears up some confusion around DLC compatibility.

[UPDATE] A Capcom representative issued a new statement to GameSpot today, confirming that GFWL users will not lose any content. The full statement is below.

"Previous Games for Windows Live users will NOT lose any DLC content because the GFWL version for RE5 didn’t have any DLC content, so Steamworks users aren't losing anything. The Gold Edition content is entirely new to PC. If you already own regular RE5 through either Steam or a boxed retail Games For Windows Live, you can acquire a free Steamworks copy and then purchase the new Gold Edition content for $14.99."

The original story is below.

Resident Evil 5 can now use Steamworks on PC instead of Games for Windows Live for its online features, Capcom has announced.

If you purchased the game on Steam, you'll be automatically upgraded to the full Steamworks edition so you don't have to use GFWL anymore. If you originally bought a retail package GFWL version, you can use the GFWL activation code on Steam to redeem the Steamworks-enabled version. The game also has a built-in tool to allow you to transfer save data and Achievements from the GFWL version to Steam.

Sadly, any DLC content you bought directly from Microsoft's GFWL Marketplace store will not carry over to Steam due to the lack of a CD or activation key.

If you want, you can also just keep playing the GFWL you have installed.

The new Steamworks version also adds the Gold Edition content that was released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Available for $15, the Untold Stories Bundle adds a versus mode, four new costumes, Mercenaries Reunion, and two new story-based chapters.

The game was pretty good until the very racist and stereotypical portrayal of African tribes just past the Crocodiles or Alligators - not that making fun of race cannot also be funny - just the game became boring and tedious as can be.

There needs to be more horror in survival horror and in case you cannot remember - there was always a strong story element to Resident Games - because no matter how many zombies you shoot in the head - a spooky story will always be remembered more.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Indeed, RE6 was pretty awful. I didn't last long before abandoning it forever. However, at least you don't have an annoying sidekick the entire way through. That's pretty much what killed RE5 for me. Well, that and Chris Redfield's gargantuan biceps.

Hey Spencer. If you really give an F about PC gaming , then you need to do something about the GFWL live fiasco. I realize that it's not tour mess, but it is your job to clean it up.

I love how people conveniently forget that RE5 Gold Edition and Super Street Fighter 4 were initially created to make PC gamers feel bad about piracy.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's because it was just an excuse not to try. I have to wonder if they'll try to pull off a RE 5 Super HD version for PS4 and XBO. I don't care about graphics, so if Capcom want's to take advantage of PS4 and XBO gamers, I say let them.

Basically capcom thinks that nobody is into her insidius plan to make people buy the DLC twice. Hell by now this content should be free.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's a technological issue and has affected many games that used GFWL. Some games can't even be played anymore at all.

You are free to continue to play your DLC with your version you bought. But if you want to do the steamworks version it requires you to purchase it again. Annoying? Sure, but hardly some evil ploy.

Am I the only one on the planet who never had issues with GFWL? Or is GFWL just one of those things that people hate because its what all the cool kids are doing? Used it for ages. Installed many games on my pc's as well as that of clients that used GFWL. Never had one issue with it. Never had a client call with an issue with it. Yet, every time it is mentioned on the net, it is the worst thing that has happened to the human race since the plague of 1347.

Same goes for Origin. Sure its not needed with Steam already out there but, I've never had an issue with it either. Yet, according to the internet, its a plague on gaming as well. I mean, omg, you have to launch a service to play a game. Shoot me in the head and stop the misery.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well I have not tried GFWL and/or have not needed any of its features - but me and a few of my friends have had serious issues with Origins EA client. Beyond the issues of privacy, (including Origins sending search data back to third parties as found by German industry just last summer 14'), or the runaround just trying to access your games, my issue is that Origin running in the background uses ram and resources for no apparent reason. While my rig can handle this, I see no reason this should be going on.

And our biggest issue is sometimes not having access to games- either due to downtimes, connection issues (either ours or theirs), and Origin client problems that require a re install. I could understand this if it was an online game like MMORPG but a single player RPG or just some friends that would rather play a LAN game in the same living room without Origins ads.

<< LINK REMOVED >> GFWL truly did suck. You had to sign into an account, in addition to signing into Steam, and it often deleted saves. For instance, my Fallout 3 saves? Gone. No idea what happened to them. There went a good chunk of my life.

Origin, on the other hand, really isn't that bad. At least it has an easy return policy, and when I had to call about something the customer service was excellent.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Oh, it's not like gfwl offers no protection against hackers, right? It's not like you can lose your save files, right? It's not like it may be a total pain for newbies to make a game run (I had to PIRATE bulletstorm even though i HAVE the game on steam simply because i couldnt play because of this stupid drm). And every time you format your pc you have to lose some time just to manage to play the game. Plus, just the fact that is a secondary drm while you play on steam is already bs enough, Making it harder to manage to play your games and keep yourself is what makes it atrocious. Just because you claim it didnt happened to you nor to your clients (i really doubt that, really. I always have some trouble to play gfwl games everytime i format my pc. Not even uplay nor origin manages to be a pain in that aspect,) it doesnt mean it was great for everyone else. If it was, a much lower number of people would be celebrating it's riddance.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> lol, there is no reason why you would have to format your pc because of a video game client. That's just silly. I've heard of more people having issues with Steam - myself included - than I have with Origin or GFWL. But, that is simply because more people use Steam than the others.

I own a pc business. If there was a serious widespread problem with a piece of software, I would hear about it. You can google ANY piece of software on the planet and you will find numerous people who are having issues with it. However, roughly 50% of the time I've dealt with software issues for a client, it turns out to be an issue with something other than the software. Sometimes a conflict with other software - especially anti-virus software, sometimes a hardware or resource conflict, sometimes user error.

I'm not saying you didn't have problems with the software. I am saying no software exists that nobody is going to have problems with. There are just too many hardware and software variables for any one piece of software to be reliable for everyone all of the time. I was talking about the exaggeration that has gone on with GFWL. Does it have issues? Of course it does. So does Steam. So does Origin and any of the many others. The hate for GFWL in particular is more than it warrants. There is much worse software out there that has received little to no criticism. Its like Gamers are a special kind of jaded when it comes to software or something.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Have i said i formated it because of gfwl client? And i dont know for other gamers, i know i had my issues with gfwl and it was enough for me to never buy any game using this drm again (everything i said but hackers happened to me with gfwl, never had any problem with origin and uplay besides the fact i dont trust ea and ubisoft). Luckily for me, re 5 and dark souls went to steamworks, just hope gfwl rots in oblivion just like outlook.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I can't speak for no one else, but I've had a problem with save games resetting in GFWL. I put in a lot of work in those games unlocking things and some of those things I used in co-op or multiplayer gameplay. That's something I wish I didn't have to go through. Sometimes, putting in my GTA IV product key again for some reason. I've had other issues as well, but I haven't had to use GFWL for anything in so long.

Resident Evil has always been good fun, most people just like to complain. it changed towards a more action oriented genre though, but it's still good.

Resident Evil 5 is one of my favorite games ever along with many other RE entries because they're very diverse instead of always being the same game all over again.

So where do I get the GFWL activation code. I tried the key I got originally on Steam but that does not work.

NVM, It seems I have to activate it through Digital River.

Time to reinstall the game solely to transfer my data from that archaic, save infesting DRM ridden platform.

When you lose your save data just because you changed operating systems, you know the DRM is bad. Good thing I learned from RF:G's Steamworks transition that my old 'corrupted' saves could be revived. Now if only all the other GFWL games transferred over.. Been wanting to replay a bunch of them.
