Resident Evil 7 Confirmed For Switch In Japan As A Streaming-Only Game

Capcom's horror game is headed to a new platform, it seems.

Resident Evil 7 is on the way to Nintendo Switch. Capcom confirmed today that a "Cloud Version" of the horror game is headed to Nintendo's hybrid system in Japan on May 24.

According to Nintendo Everything, it's called the Cloud Version because the game plays via the cloud, with a required download of only 45 MB. As such, you will need an internet connection to play this version of the game. Nintendo Everything added that you can play the game for up to 15 minutes for free, but after that, you have to pay ¥2,000 (~$18 USD) for a "ticket" that lets you play for 180 days.

Now Playing: Resident Evil 7 Confirmed For Switch In Japan As A Streaming-Only Game - GS News Update

The Cloud Version includes the base game, along with the Banned Footage Volume 1-2, End of Zoe, and Not a Hero expansions. You can check out the first trailer embedded above.

Resident Evil 7 launched in January 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC to critical acclaim, with reviewers praising its atmosphere, appearance, and narrative. Over the past year, it's also done well commercially: Capcom revealed recently that the game has passed 5.1 million copies sold.

These are very good numbers for the game, but it's worth noting that Resident Evil 7 has currently sold fewer copies than any other mainline Resident Evil game besides Resident Evil 3, according to data compiled by the Resident Evil fan wiki. The previous instalment in the series, Resident Evil 6, has sold close to 10 million units since its launch in 2012.

As of yet, Capcom has not said if Resident Evil 7 is headed to Switch in other parts of the world, and if so, if it will have the same cloud-based structure. Keep checking back for more.

This announcement comes just a few weeks before E3 2018, where more game announcements for Nintendo Switch and many other platforms are expected.

hm allot of h8 for this on here. i understand, game steaming services i do not like as well. but that being said in a handheld market, it would work. for larger hard hitting 3rd party games, when the handheld cant handle the game. the game would not even need to be worked on allot to be able to do this, like say witcher 3 on PC running to steam to the switch, dont need to port it to the switch. it could attract allot of 3rd party support for Nintendo which is not something any1 really says EVER. some of the game may even be able to look even better then if the switch hardware processed it. now i wonder which would take more battery life, using wifi for steaming, or processing the game via hardware. there are hurdles some will not be able to jump such as slow internet and data caps, but for those whom do not have the problem, it may work out well. just most defintiny NOT a timed pass crap, then the added perk of saving memory space helps in a handheld as well.

So, $18 for a 180-day game plus $4 (at least) subscription for allowing cloud save. And all you get is a livestream video, which means you and your spending is pretty much done f*cked, even worse if without Internet. Not to mention there are many possibilities that Nintendo would f*ck you up (no refund, game may goes deleted from library for no reason, getting banned, etc)

Meanwhile, with the same $18 you can get the same game (of course it's a used disc or bought from sale) permanently, play it offline with better visual and performance as well. Wanna play on handheld? Got it:

PC - GPD Win, Nvidia Shield and even mobile phone (Andriod/iOS)

PS4 - PS Vita

Xbox - Coming Soon

Bonus: definitely no extra cost for cloud saving (except PS4 tho), plus you can backup your save whenever you want with a thing called USB.

@djwood84: Well, the Xbox did not have a handheld console to begin with, and the main consoles are not yet available for streaming to portable devices either. Still, definitely they are thinking about streaming to phones and other devices that are Windows-based, it is just not right now.

Good for some people who just want to play the game and have a Switch. They're never gonna play it again after that anyway.

This is awesome and epic for the switch. Not only can you play in glorious 720p, obviously the definitive edition and better than VR and 4K HDR, but now you can have high input lag as a simulation to freezing in fear. The switch is bringing horror to a whole new level.

I knew resi7 would release on switch. Makes you wonder what lie they’ve been selling about “next gen” graphics on ps4 and xbox.

@Bread_or_Decide: tr0lling hard today :D

wait, so you guys bash ps now which is essentially the same thing... but a similar service is fine on the switch? capcom clearly doesn't want to waste its time porting the game to the switch, so they decided to sell you an inferior version which requires an always-online connection. how convenient for a HANDHELD lol. it will lag, have severe artifacting and lose connection without saving your progress more times than you can count. enjoy.

@Bread_or_Decide: the future of digital. were you rent a game for 180 days and just need an internet connection and no storage space required. ( which is very handy on the switch to be fair )

@s7eventhheaven: Yeah it's a cool option. I dig it. As long as they give me the option to buy physical I'm a happy boy. Digital and cloud streaming are for those that want it and that's a very good thing.

@Bread_or_Decide: NO. It isn't. Input lag will never be overcome. Have fun playing with 3 second input lag. There is a reason why PS Now isn't working and neither did any other streaming service. The only service where this works is where you subscribe and download the game locally, ala game pass. Everything else was, is, and will be, an abject failure.

@Bread_or_Decide: What you should really do is invest in a gaming machine with 4k HDR or VR capability and really enjoy RE:7. Make sure to set aside budget for more underwear. For the first, popping your pants in fear. If you play on the switch with a stream of the game, for pooping yourself laughing that somehow someone thought this was a good idea.

This is quite literally one of those “I’ve got good news and bad news” scenarios. On the positive side, at least fans of Resident Evil will get a chance to play what was one of the stand-out games of last year.

@lodoss900:It might actually be longer than on a normal Switch game, since the graphics chip presumably wouldn't be doing anywhere near the usual amount of work, and would just be pushing the image from the cloud servers onto either the TV or the Switch's internal screen.

@FallenOneX: I assume this will be the censored not Z-rated version of the game. So you shouldn't have much issue getting it. Playing it however might be a completely different problem, I assume it streams off hardware that will be located in Japan. It will either have minor input delay or basically be unplayable.

@mcnichoj: From what I've read, both versions are censored in Japan. Even in Grotesque, the blood is black, there's no decapitation, things like that. That said, your quality of life assumptions are sensible, methinks.

@asnakeneverdies: They're censored differently and were therefore rated differently. Z is Japans equivalent to the North America AO rating. Z games are prohibited from being sold to minors and they're not allowed to be stocked on normal shelves, they're supposed to be kept behind the store counter. They also have rules for Z rated games via digital distribution, at least on the Xbox platform you're required to own a Japanese credit card in order to purchase and download them.

I've never tried to digitally buy a Z game on PSN so I don't know if that's a standard rule. Would make sense though and figured I would mention ratings possibly being an issue.
