Resident Evil 7 Demo Hits 3 Million Downloads, Drops PS Plus Requirement

New heights for the horror game's demo.

The Resident Evil 7 demo has reached a new milestone. Capcom announced today that the Beginning Hour demo, as it's called, has racked up 3 million downloads since its release in June.

This is particularly noteworthy achievement, considering the demo is only available on PlayStation 4 and you have to have a PlayStation Plus subscription to play it (that's changing; see below). As of early July, the demo had reached 2 million downloads, which was good enough to set the record for the most-downloaded single-player PS4 demo in the first week of its release in North America.

Beginning Hour is a prologue, but will not be part of the full Resident Evil 7 game, which will feature a different protagonist. The demo houses a number of seemingly unsolved mysteries, one of which Capcom has debunked.

In other news about the Resident Evil 7 demo, Capcom also announced today that it's releasing a new version of the demo, called Twilight, on September 17. This will allow players to explore "more of the mysterious, derelict mansion" featured in the original.

A trailer for the Twilight demo has also been released and can be seen here. You can grab the current Resident Evil 7 demo from the PlayStation Store here--and you no longer need a PS Plus membership.

Resident Evil 7 launches in January 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Capcom recently confirmed the game will not have microtransactions, while a third DLC chapter has been added to the season pass.

Well the demo sounds cool, but the fact this game has a season pass means I can just wait a year for the "complete edition" or whatever.

Thats an interesting way to promote the game. Its kind of like if when silent hill 2 was released they decided to give away "born from a wish" on a demo disk first.

It's a great demo, but it feels too scripted. Games like P.T. feel scarier because what happens can be randomized depending on how you play it. You can be caught off guard easily because certain things will happen differently almost every time you play. With RE7, you already know exactly what's gonna happen after you play It once and that loses some of its "specialness" to me. That randomness in P.T. adds a different element to the genre that this game apparently doesn't have, which to me, is a shame. However, I think it will be a fun game.

@jayskoon93: PT was just a demo though, and I thought it felt scripted... because certain things only happen depending on the number of times you've gone through the hallway i think... maybe im wrong. i still have the demo lol, didnt delete it

@jayskoon93: There's randomness in RE7 demo. Theres a ghostly figure of a girl that randomly appears for jump scares around the house. . . well for some at least. She didn't appear at all for me but I have seen videos where she does.
