Resident Evil 7 Goes Back to Horror Roots, Will Be Announced at E3 - Analyst

A big announcement is on the way, apparently.

Resident Evil 7 is in development and will be announced next month at E3 2016, according to Japanese analyst Serkan Toto.

Writing on Twitter today, he also revealed that the game will return to the franchise's horror roots, and that Capcom has hired designer Jordan Amaro to work on it. He's no stranger to big-name franchises, as he also worked on 2015's Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

The existence of Resident Evil 7 would come as little surprise. In October last year, veteran producer Masachika Kawata told fans to "stay tuned" for news about the game.

"We're currently not at a state to talk about it," Kawata said at the time. "But please stay tuned."

In October 2013, a reference to Resident Evil 7 was spotted on a contract employee's resume.

GameSpot's Resident Evil 6 review scored the game a 4.5/10, calling it a "messy mix of annoying quick-time events and constant set pieces." Overall, the game was met with mixed review scores. Capcom shipped 5 million copies of the game, but said various "challenges" and "inadequate organizational collaboration" led to the title performing below expectations.

Some have remarked that the Resident Evil series has strayed from its horror origins in favor of focusing more on action. In that 2015 interview, Kawata seemed to agree.

"Since there's been more spinoff titles, I can see how it can be perceived in such a way," Kawata said. "And of course I believe that we should produce titles that bring out the horror. I'm thinking about it and also preparing for it."

Capcom has not announced plans to hold its own E3 briefing this year; historically, the company operates a booth on the floor, but does not conduct its own show.

Interestingly, just recently, Capcom announced that three "major" unannounced games will arrive by April 2017. One of these is expected to sell 4 million copies, suggesting it comes from an established franchise. However, nothing so far has linked it to the Resident Evil series.

The next Resident Evil game is shooter spinoff Umbrella Corps, which comes out in June for PlayStation 4 and PC. Capcom is also planning to release Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 on PS4 and Xbox One, though release dates for these new-generation ports have not been announced.

2016 is the 20th anniversary of the Resident Evil series. In support of this, Capcom has teased that it is planning a "full-scale offensive" to mark the milestone.

I wish I could believe that. It seems like they've been saying it will return to its horror roots ever since RE4 was released and each new game just brings it further away from that.

@nintendians: That really should happen. The RE goes back to being a horror survival game and Dino Crisis becomes their action franchise. Both the classic and modern RE fans are gonna be happy.

@erhre: it didn't felt like an RE game, the last good RE was RE4.. and after that the creator left to form Platinum Games

Finally, a RE game that's not a remaster.

But it'll probably end up like 6...

@xenomorphalien: well i think i have outgrowned resident evil. i'm more about story than just gameplay. the fact that they completely ruined the wesker storyline kinda ended it for me after 5. yes i played 6 and hated it. The whole Wesker Children story line was just stupid to me. and they still didn't resolve the ending to RE1 or the remake where if you have chris, Jill and rebecca survive or if you have jill Barry and Chris survive but in both of those it's like Barry and Rebecca just disappears in the others ending.

i'm still waiting on the RE2 remake hopefully they don't change it too much. cause for the most part it was perfect

This is almost exactly what they said about 6. That worries me more than anything. I shan't get my hopes up.

There are so many directions that they can take a franchise like this. They really should try taking elements from survival games like DayZ while using a city as a backdrop in a Dead Rising-style campaign only without the over-reliance on time. Make melee more of a viable 1-on-1 option, keep ammo to a minimum, and force the player to get creative when trying to deal with or get by hordes of zombies.

Didn't they say something like this with RE6? I'm super skeptical with them, however maybe they know better since the sales for the REmake remaster was a big success for them.

And we still haven't heard much about the RE2 remake either.

The franchise is too milked already. I wish for a reboot, back to Racoon City, baby. In old classic RE style, of course.

Back to the roots huh? So they are willing to make the next RE with fixed cameras and bring it back to an actual survival horror and not that pile of steaming garbage that was RE6? I sure hope so.

@jasonb520: I'm personally fine with fixed cameras, but I don't think it's necessary. If they had the camera and controls of RE4, but had more enclosed spaces, more puzzles, less ammo and recoveries, and have you explore a maze instead of having set pieces I think it would be fine.

If they want to let players be able to move and shoot/aim, make it more viable to shoot while standing still. Have a similar mechanic to bullet spread like Counter Strike, where moving and shooting will mainly be a waste of ammo.

One thing I've noticed with capcom and their resident evil sequels...has recently been downgraded in playability including sluggish motion capture when you run etc. 6 looked good on a big scale but it still lacked and the game engines were wrong after last gen consoles. Catch up on the systems today and make it good quality and get more quality team members to make the next lot successful. The remasters are keeping me happy but now is a good time to improve

I'm cautiously optimistic about Resident Evil 7, considering Capcom's recent track record too good to be true often is.

Zombie games are like military shooters right now...over-saturation. I honestly want RE to go back to its roots but I think Capcom has waited too long and produced almost nothing to get people excited about their games except remasters at this point. In the meantime, gamers have moved onto bigger and better things.

make it hard, make ammo scarce (like in the last of us), give us different means of disposing zombies (maybe some breakable melee weapons, but no infinite insta-stealth-button-kill), make it so that you have to really think about how to get past enemies (do i use the few bullets i have? can i safely run past? can i use the environment to kill them or sneak by?), have some great and difficult puzzles, that become harder to solve at higher difficulties and have random solutions, and lastly do not make it an open world game because there are too many of those already and the 1 thing open world games don't have is tension (make it linear in general, but with big maps to explore, kinda like the last of us or uncharted 4).

Yeah, 6 was also claimed as "going back to basics." It was basically just 5, but with character choice.

Good news. RE4 was a great game but nonetheless led the series in a very meh direction (5 was objectively a decent game I just found it very dull, 6 needs no words. Could not be assed playing Revelations). However I doubt they are actually making an old school tank control type game so I am curious to see what the game will play like.

Can't really be anything more than cautiously optimistic given the series history.
