Resident Evil 7 "Scaling Back" on Classic Cameos, Series Actor Says

Resident Evil's Leon actor says he isn't directly involved with 7 but would jump at the chance to reprise the role.

Not much is known about Resident Evil 7's story, other than the name of the protagonist, his mission, and a few other details. Now, Resident Evil's current Leon voice actor Matt Mercer told GameSpot the upcoming game is "scaling back" on cameos of classic characters, adding that he believes it's a good thing.

"As far as 7 goes, I think they're scaling back a little bit on throwing in all the classic cameos," Mercer said. "I can say that I don't have any involvement in 7 directly.

"But I think it's also good of them, especially coming off of [Resident Evil 6] and its lukewarm reception, to go ahead and reestablish their roots and maybe start an original story," he continued. "And if they decide that that does well, maybe they can then marry it in with the previous stories."

Mercer said he thinks that concentrating on the quality of Resident Evil's new direction is "paramount to maintaining the franchise." However, he says if Capcom ever sees a good opportunity for Leon to show up in Resident Evil 7 or a future game, he's "eagerly awaiting the phone call."

"Leon is a character I have a strong appreciation for," said Mercer. "I loved him when I played the series and being able to step into those shoes has been a huge honor. So any chance to jump into his shoes again, I would definitely leap at."

Mercer took over the voice of Leon in Resident Evil 6 and has since appeared in Resident Evil: Revelations 2 and two animated movies, including next year's Resident Evil: Vendetta.

Resident Evil 7 releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on January 24, 2017.

We chatted with Mercer as part of an interview for Critical Role, an online Dungeons & Dragons show that features multiple video game voice actors and, at times, celebrity guests such as Fast & Furious's Vin Diesel. The Last of Us actor Ashley Johnson was also present and said she'd love to return for a sequel to the 2013 video game.

Matthew Mercer did a good job in Resident Evil 6 as Leon, but I prefer Paul Mercier. His performance is what transitioned Leon from the young rookie cop in Resident Evil 2 to the trained veteran that he is in the later games. He also did a fine job in Darkside Chronicles, which was essentially a re-telling of Resident Evil 2's story in the form of a rail-shooter.

I feel the same way about Claire Redfield's voice actress Alyson Court. It was heartbreaking to not see her reprise the role in Revelations 2 after voicing her from Resident Evil 2 all the way till Operation Raccoon City, and frustrating because there is so much mystery regarding her replacement "James Baker".

Also most horror films lose their scare factor past the 3rd in the series for the same reason RE has. We already have and idea of what's going on. In the first game we saw zombies but we weren't sure what was going on for a while. Was it super-natural was it sci-fi? Were zombies the only threat?

It's a good idea to get outside the "classic" cast. Part of what makes a game or movie "scary" is the aura of mystery. RE has lost that, there's always an outbreak caused by Umbrella , or some sort of Neo Umbrella group. It's always zombies and the protagonists have already dealt with these Zombies for several games now. It's better to have a new threat with a protagonists who has know prior knowledge in how to deal with the situation.

People also form these attachments t these characters who have no real distinguishable personalities or characteristics. You can replace pretty much any protagonist in the RE games for one of the other "classics"with the same dialogue with a few alterations to who is referenced and there wouldn't be a feel of difference. Don't get me wrong Leon and Jill are my favorites, but why are they? Their character design...

The four characters Jill, Claire, Leon, Chris, - as with, all of the supporting characters, they have added over the years - do let you feel more intimate with the RE universe and the ongoing fight against Umbrella Corp. That is why they should continue using them in the story as often as possible. Please dear god give re7 a decent story.

There is a validity, that tensions and scares, are less if you feel they are not going to kill a lead character off. But is not true with video games as the player is always filling the shoes. I mean look at Tomb Raider games, we know she (LAra) is not going to perma die, but we still sit at the edge of our seats when she barely grabs that next ledge.

In my opinion, it should be a new game if you changed the character and the story. The only thing RE is great because of the boding story of each character. However, the game needs to move on to another story. We'd better wait for the game coming out, but now we shouldn't criticize while it not out yet.

You guys seem to forget that the only reason Resident Evil was great, was because of Shinji Mikami. Because after he left, the game went to shit. Oh and what do you know, his last RE game was 4 and after that, it started to completely suck!

He was the mastermind behind Resident Evil. He gets it. While these left over Capcom dummies are desperately trying to match his greatness and are failing miserably..they just don't get it..probably never will without him..I'm already expecting RE7 to be underwhelming because Mikami isn't involved.. Just like how Metal Gear is already starting to fail without Kojima with "Metal Gear Survive" lmao... They need the original masterminds of the games or it's going to underwhelm or fail time and time again.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result..Change the god damn game director! Or bring back Shinji Mikami damnit!

For me personally, this is very dissapointing to hear from Capcom. I have been a fan of Resident Evil since Resident Evil 2 on the N64. And it absolutely sucks to hear that there will be none of the characters that we have been playing as since the beginning making appearences in this title. Along with the fact that game will be first person and will be going more for a horror kind of style like Outlast, which is fine, but this is Resident Evil we are talking about, they started the survival horror genre and made it what it is today. I am going to miss the old school fixed camera angles, I just dont see or understand the road Capcom is heading down, when they said they are bringing it back to the roots of what RE1 was, I was not expecting this. Definitely not buying this game, rather have the Resident Evil 2 remake instead

@idkhow2play: Uh... the fixed camera angles have been out for long time. Also, don't expect the RE2 remake to have pre-rendered backgrounds either. As for going to back to the roots, I don't think they meant "roots" as in what the game looks like; I think they meant bringing back the survival element.

@idkhow2play: I am sure the new protagonists will be much better, and appeal to a younger dema... audience also. With a 'hipster' look and an 'in your face attitude', that have some cool moves like 'skateboarding' and 'parkour' over some zombies as needed. Maybe a few Mtn Dew product placements and Kia Soul car racing along the streets of RAcoon City.

Maybe a few X's in the name like REsident Evil Exxxtreme, because the extra xxx make it cooler. Maybe add in a popular star nowadays like Hanna Montana or maybe that Miley Cyris girl if the other is not available. And of course guns and lots of FPS shooting that is so popular ... maybe add care packages like Modern Warfare.. yeah gonna make this as cool as RE 6!

The characters from resident evil 1, 2 and 3 were played fairly well into the story.

But as the games went on, that story became something that was fairly acceptable to down right stupid.

I thought the parasite of re4 was interesting. But these god like powers was a bit much on boss battles.

Re5 was just a rinse and repeat of 4.

The main character that got on my nerves was Wesker. These silly villian vs hero storyline they added each game was just so far out the box they were pathetic.

Don't get me started on resident evil revelations 2...

I'm glad re7 has gone this route. Cut the ties with the previous characters and try to make some memorable chapter in the series and not a sour taste in our mouths.

don't really care if they get cameo as it is a reboot of the series.

Like a few people I am bias against FP (first person) since I do get a little dizzy from the camera movement. 3rd person (3P) or over the shoulder 3P the camera isn't as bouncy as FP.

The balance between surivial horror, action, puzzle, story and atmosphere, I like RE1 the best. Silent Hill came out a few months after RE1. RE1 had better action and it sold more. SH you have to beat up monsters with a pipe or whatever you can find back then. RE1, everything was new, graphic was actually good back (nice texture mapping of the wall) then, except for the tank control. RE4 comes in 2nd. RE2, 3, Veronica were really just the same formula but minor tweaks and more polished. RE5 was more action but It was done well. RE6 was like a military FPS no longer RE, but I did finished one storyline and didn't care to do the other storylines.

RE7 demo did feel like outlast (like other mentioned), really no action except, more just purer survival horror game. Maybe too slow for most people pace. Didn't like SH the room either that was FP. Love Heavy rain didn't like FP of Beyond 2 souls.

@xophaser: The fact they're perhaps making the game have little if any combat in the game is a worrying thing we all asked for change but we wanted zombies and I'm certain we still wanted combat but we wanted the setting of the game to fit that horror theme with the horror theme and being alone in a dangerous open world or linear whatever you will with sparse ammo and a lack of quick time events and things that make us seem overpowered gone by this I mean the spinning kick moves that were introduced into RE4 instead of a spinning kick maybe a standard kick or push that has a little bit of physics behind it but doesn't heavily delay the hordes of attackers that are going for you from getting to you and finally yes we wanted the puzzles and gore.

I don't think RE7 will deliver on what I said which is a shame because If it basically is a rip off of Outlast I won't be purchasing it.

I just don't get how IF this is the direction they're going in is the right way for the game they surely must be aware that to make an RE game a survival game it's pretty simple all they do is make the hostile enemies more powerful and limit the amount of ammo and add in the possibility of running away and hiding.

I'm happy we won't see the classic characters much in the new one, they got insanely stupid anyway as the games got more and more action oriented.

I know I know, RE never had intelligent or well written characters in the originals either, but since this is not a lore reboot, better to ignore them now that they are ruined.

For all the Playstation fans that dont understand why I think turning Resident evil 7 into a first person game could be a bad thing. My first concern is them going this route with future RE titles. Turning RE into a first person outlast type game totally goes against what the series known for. Of course it adds all the horror elements but are they the horror elements that true RE fans can respect. Just think of it like this. What if naughty dog decides to go first person with their next uncharted game, How would you guys feel about that. Re7 first demo was ok but the second one lets me know the extent of the situation. My reception for this game is the same feeling I get from seeing the Metal Gear Survive trailer. Fully changing Resident Evil is not what RE fans meant by going back to its roots.

@kentray1985: like i said in the last post the game has already been butchered anyway so at this point if they can revamp the franchise in first person so be it. The franchise is already past its expiration date anyway so this cant be that bad especially since we dont really know how the bulk of the game will play out. It might the classic RE just in FP skin so dont count it out just yet ya know.

@kentray1985: I'm surprised some people don't understand why 1st person could be a bad thing, as logic shows anything can be bad if used wrong.

First of all, why would you call it an outlast type of game? outlast doesn't have combat, it doesn't have puzzles or resource management other than the dumb batteries, and its heavily scripted and linear.

If naughty dog would change uncharted's camera people wouldn't like it for sure, but us RE fans lost the camera AND the core gameplay, ANDthe fundamental experience, AND the horror and tone of story and characters, we lost everything with RE4 already. RE7 seems to be bringing back most of that, except for the camera.

I do agree people who wanted the franchise to go back to its roots didnt want a 1st person camera, I don't want it honestly, but a game is more than just the camera system, thats the point, and if the deal is we get a new camera style but at least an attempt at going back to roots in every other aspect, then its great, and a major improvement over what we had in RE4 5 and 6.

I'd rather play a Resident Evil game in first person, than a linear action shooter with almost nothing of RE in third person, simple.

@yeah_28: I agree and disagree with you. You mustve missed out on the second demo showcasing whats actually in the game. In didnt show item management nor any weapons. It looked like a bunch of hiding like outlast. I dont want to see this type of stuff in a RE game. The first demo drawed me into the game as a first person in a way I could respect.

Re4 was the best all around Resident Evil with the perfect blend of action and horror. This tone Capcom shouldve kept up. Re5 was a great co-op game but I felt shouldve kept the tone of Re4 throughout instead of going all in with the action. Re6 shouldve never been made at all and completely shows that Capcom didnt know where to go with the series.

Re7 doesnt fit the type of horror thats been involved with the Resident evil series so I find it laughable that you huys are taking a huge dose of that PR talk about the game gaing back to its roots. What roots would you be talking about exactly because last time I checked RE started off as a more gory campy type of horror game. The setting of Re7 doesnt partially fit the horror roots of Resident Evil.

Capcom simply needs Shinji Mikami back which is someone who knows and understands what Resident Evil is because clearly the devs who have RE doesnt understand. So many fans feel the way I do so theres no damage controlling the obvious. Im just tired of fan boys ruining gaming with their biased opinions. They dont need to hype Re7 up like they did No man sky and Destiny. This only makes things worst when you brag on games that dont deserve it then the publishers will try to make more of a disappoining game. Dont want to see more first person RE titles and Re7 shouldve been a spinoff instead of being part of the series.

@kentray1985:

I didnt miss the second demo, you seem to miss what it actually was: It was content from the game, but its just a VHS footage from a character that's not the protagonist; you can experience these to get different perspectives on the story and events in the game, just like audio logs in Dead Space, but this time you play them, just like the director said.

Meaning you obviously won't see the core gameplay pillars in a flashback, as you dont see them in any game ever, like when playing Ciri in TW3 you can't get quests or upgrade equipment or learn abilities. If you don't know TW3, its a full blown RPG, yet if we would see and judge only Ciri footage, we would think its just a linear hack and slash game with nothing else. Thankfully it was explained the Lantern RE7 footage is just that.

I disagree about RE4, but I won't elaborate much, we all have different tastes. I'll just say I love RE because of setting, tone, AND gameplay; so RE4 being a simple linear action shooter with 4 chapters of village horror and the rest of...stuff, opposes most of the experience that RE was for me.

Like I said, I judge games in their full context and all their aspects. The horror style of RE7 is new and different indeed, not going back to roots imo. Yet on the other hand, it IS horror at least, unlike RE5, RE6 and most of RE4. Taking in account all of what RE is, at least some form of pure horror and most of the gameplay pillars in place (if they do it) is an improvement to RE4 had.

Shinji Mikami is a good developer who has shown more than one time that he struggles when evolving his games and franchises. Even RE4 starts good and falls apart tremendously as it continues. He might know how to begin, but when he needs to get deep everything ends up in simplistic action stuff, like The Evil Within too.

I'm not a fanboy and I'm not hyping anything, and I probably was one of the few people in the world who never even felt attracted to No Man' Sky or Destiny.

You just fail to see that of RE as whole, you probably never liked survival horror, you just liked shooting monsters in the face, thats what RE4 did better than all other REs, and so its your best. I like Remake and RE 1 to CVX, and Capcom never expanded that formula, never improved it, and just let it die in time and repetition.

Did I ever say RE7 was awesome or the best? no, so don't jump to bs conclusions. I analyze and theorize based on the little we have so far, keeping doubt as the only thing sure. It's not my fault you are convinced the game sucks already even though you never even saw what you will be doing 90% of the time in it.
