Resistance 4 Was Pitched But Didn't Work Out, Says Former Insomniac Boss

Blame timing and market opportunity.

According to former Insomniac Games boss Ted Price, a Resistance 4 game was pitched but ultimately wasn't made.

In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Ted Price, said, "We did pitch that one. It was a wonderful concept, and in terms of timing and market opportunity, it didn't work out." When asked whether Resistance 3's poor sales at the time impacted the decision to move on from the series, Price didn't answer directly.

"Resistance 3 was intended to end that chapter of the Resistance franchise," he explained. "With the way we ended with [protagonist] Capelli and closed a lot of loops on various smaller story items...we wanted to do that so we could have more options in the future, whether we would go ahead with more Resistance games or taking another turn."

Resistance 3 was released in 2011 for PS3. While Insomniac was an independent studio back then, the Resistance franchise was published by Sony. A PlayStation Vita entry was released in 2012 called Resistance: Burning Skies, but it was created by another developer, Nihilistic, (now known as nStigate Games).

Back in 2012, Price confirmed that Insomniac wouldn't be making any more Resistance games, but later said in 2013 that the studio "seriously considered" a fourth entry. However, Insomniac during that time chose to create the third-person co-op shooter game Fuse instead in order to avoid franchise fatigue. Insomniac Games went on to create Ratchet & Clank (2016), Marvel's Spider-Man, Sunset Overdrive, and Song of the Deep before being acquired by Sony in 2019.

Price recently retired from Insomniac Games and the studio is currently working on its Wolverine game.

didnt like Resistance 3 so much but R2 was crazy good, massive upgrade from R1, I remember the controller comfort playing R2 was the best I ever tried in any game(at the time).

Resistance 1 and 2 were pretty weak, but 3 was good, and I think a new game that used 3 as a starting point for its design could be cool.

@mogan: all the games were pretty well received, but R3 definitely leaned into CoD gameplay style. To each their own, but I couldn’t get into R3 very much, because it abandoned what made it unique and catered to the CoD machine. I think that’s also why it didn’t sell very well. It did have some high points, but overall seemed like a sidestep for the franchise, not an improvement.

I am surprised that they’ve never done anything with the IP since. Maybe that PSP game, but I don’t count that. I’m pretty shocked that they never remastered any of them. I’d love to play them in 4k@60fps. Or better yet, on PC unlocked.

To me Resistance wasn't all that great (not terrible either, it could be fun), but mostly a tech demo for PS3 and you took whatever you could get in the first terrible years of the PS3. I'm much happier we got Sunset Overdrive instead. And of course their Ratchet & Clank games were far more fun.

Like Guerilla dropping their increasingly stupid Space Hitler series... uh... Killzone, for the far better Horizon games, this seems an overall win.

I miss Resistance 2's co-op mode so much, that was such a wild experience. Just chaos and explosions everywhere with actual team mechanics that didn't encourage teamplay, it REQUIRED it. Was still playing it off and on right up to the server shutdown.

Dumbest thing is you can still play the co-op locally with 2 player split screen, but the mode requires 3 players to function (shielding tanky soldier, healing/rezzing medic, ammo supplying and dps spec ops), so letting you play that way is basically pointless. You can get like halfway through a stage solo as medic since their main gun doesn't use ammo but spec ops can't survive without soldier and soldier can't function without spec ops or survive without medic, so yeah, miss the big group of people nuking aliens.

All that's left now really are a few videos around Youtube. Keep hoping the games get that rumored remaster collection but you KNOW the multiplayer elements will be stripped out if it happens.

I think three main entries was enough tbh. After all this time, however, I would be interested to see what they'd be able to accomplish now. The online was a lot of fun too.
