Revealed: Nvidia's Next Flagship Graphics Card, the GTX 980Ti

New GeForce GPU carries 6GB of memory, costs $650.

Nvidia has divulged new details of its GeForce 980Ti, the latest addition to its line of premium-priced graphics cards.

Starting at $650 (and bundled with a copy of Batman: Arkham Knight), the GTX 980Ti carries six gigabytes of GDDR5 memory. That's about half the capacity of Nvidia's $1000 Titan X graphics card, but Nvidia believes the 980Ti can perform to a similar standard at about two-thirds of the price.

A gallery below offers a closer look at the new GPU.

Much like with the Titan X, the 980Ti has a 336GB/s maximum bandwidth. Its display outputs are 1x HDMI, 1x DVI, and 3x DP, while it has two power connectors arranged as 1x 6pin and 1x 8pin.

Meanwhile, the GTX 980, due to its drop down the pecking order, will now be sold at $500.

Nvidia's new GeForce prices follow:

  • Titan X: $1000
  • 980 Ti: $650
  • 980: $500
  • 970: $330
  • 960: $200

Mark Aevermann, a spokesperson for Nvidia, told GameSpot that the GTX 980Ti was built with DirectX 12 features in mind.

"This is, by all rights, our flagship GeForce GTX GPU, built on the GM 200 chip," he said, "and we designed it for a lot of the top-end PC features, such as 4K, VR, and G-Sync. These are the things that this card excels at."

More gimmicks from Nvidia. The difference in games in terms of performance at 1080p or 1440p resolutions between the 980 and the Ti will be minimal to zero. That was proven nicely during the time of the 780 and 780Ti. While people with the Ti were getting 70-80 fps, people with 780 were getting 60-70 at the same resolution. Look around Youtube and it has been proven. This is something the crocodiles at Nvidia don't want you to know. All they keep harping about is "30% faster this..." "50% faster that..". Nonsense is all I can say. My 980 is burning games alive and I don't need this latest toy from Nvidia. This is why console gamers despise us PC gamers so much. No point in shelling out 650$ for an extra 10-15 fps.

@starjay009: the 780ti was an unlocked version of the 780, the 980 is already a fully unlocked chip and the 980ti is a slightly cut down titan x, that performs almost like a titan x, the difference between the 980 and the 980ti is huge compared to the 780 and 780ti, they just went balls with the naming, they should have named it titan s or something cause it is based on the gm200 chip

@Alurit@starjay009: yeah the titan x has 3072 cores and the 980 ti has 2800 and change the 890 has around 2200 funny thing is the 780 ti has around 7800 cores but still has around 40% less performance compared to the 890

@starjay009: Comparing 780 to 780 Ti to 980 to 980 TI is very different. Both 780 and 780 TI used same chip GK110, 780 with 2304 cores and TI with 2880 cores. 980 and 980 TI uses different chips GM204 and GM200. 980 has 2048 cores and TI has 2816. 980 to 980 TI is a much bigger difference than 780 to 780 TI.

No need to try to justify buying a 980 by trying to downplay the 980 TI. I have a GTX Titan X, I don't need to justify spending a ridiculous amount of money for a small difference in performance from the 980 TI.

Not trying to push buttons, but are there any games out there right now on PC that can fully utilize these cards. Or is every game just going to run at ultra 120 FPS.

Basically is there a point to spending $650 on a graphics card when the graphics can't meet what the card can actually produce. So is there a game out there that would truly benefit from this card or is it all for just the extra gizmos the super hard-core PC gamer needs.

@IndependenceYou: Unless you're going 4k, there really is no need for spending this much I agree. You could spend $325 now on a card that will handle everything you throw at it. 3-5 years down the road another $325 for a new card that by then will do everything this $650 card could do and more.

Games are built with consoles in mind and without mod support for higher rez textures and more foliage (see Skyrim) there is very little need to spend tons of money.

@Deevoshun: Consoles AND lower tier PCs, which are by far the most common platform out there.

@IndependenceYou: The main reason is memory. Games are starting to feature uncompressed textures that require over 4GB of VRAM. As for processing power, I can't see running games at 120-144 fps is a bad thing.

@IndependenceYou: if you run your game at a higher resolution like 1440p or 4k then yes. However, not too many people do that. The vast majority of gamers on pc still play at 1080p. Its pretty much for the uber enthusiast. It would probably be smarter for most people those who play at 1080 to get the 970 or 290 and wait for a graphics card a few generations down the line.

No thanks Nvidia. Happy with my darling GTX 980 Superclocked. Besides, the 980 Ti is nothing but the GTX 980 with more video memory. That attributes to slightly better fps but nothing substantial. I also don't have a 4K monitor so I am not losing out on anything. Maxing out all my games at the moment at 1080p or 1440p. Will get it probably after an year.

@starjay009: "Besides, the 980 Ti is nothing but the GTX 980 with more video memory." That's NONSENSE. The GTX 980 has a GM 204 GPU, and the GTX 980 ti has a GM 200 GPU. So it's a different chip. The GTX 980 ti has about 800 more CUDA cores and performs about 30% faster.

@Wiro_: It's 20% faster, not 30%, according to the performance summary of many games in the Techpowerup review.

My GTX 970 is only about a year old. it has maxed every game that has come out with respectable frame rates . Though for the witcher 3 I have had to put a rather aggresive over clock on it to ultra the game and go into the ini files and turn the AA on hair works down to x4 instaed of x8 to get a stable 60 fps.

If I can wait another year or two the gtx 980, the 980ti or the titan will come down in price by another couple hundred bucks . or if anything pick up another 970 and sli them together . I am not a fan of sli but by the time I need it the 970 will prolly be like 150-200 bucks , better than droping nearly a grand on the next marginally better card

To do 5K at 60Hz you have to use two DisplayPort outputs. They're still using DisplayPort 1.2. It's taking a while to see DisplayPort 1.3, which would make running a 5K monitor more practical. In the meantime 4K is good. The Dell UP2414Q is beautiful.

The only true titan is the first-gen gtx titan.. the 2nd Gen titan black could be easily call a gtx 780 ti 6gb or gtx 790 6gb.. the 3rd Gen titan I could say the same it could be easily call a gtx 980 ti 12gb or gtx 990. Nivida is overusing the word titan when is really just a ram upgrade.

It will only last 1 year and next years flag ship is SOOOOOO much more powerful who would just throw away their money on these cards when they can wait 1 1/2 years for a much more powerful card.

@Ravenlore_basic: Gaming performance is debatable. While there will be improvement in other areas, its unclear as to what those improvements will look like for games. They also try to say look at how much faster x is and then the game performance increases by the same amount every year.
