Revealed: Nvidia's Next Flagship Graphics Card, the GTX 980Ti

New GeForce GPU carries 6GB of memory, costs $650.

Nvidia has divulged new details of its GeForce 980Ti, the latest addition to its line of premium-priced graphics cards.

Starting at $650 (and bundled with a copy of Batman: Arkham Knight), the GTX 980Ti carries six gigabytes of GDDR5 memory. That's about half the capacity of Nvidia's $1000 Titan X graphics card, but Nvidia believes the 980Ti can perform to a similar standard at about two-thirds of the price.

A gallery below offers a closer look at the new GPU.

Much like with the Titan X, the 980Ti has a 336GB/s maximum bandwidth. Its display outputs are 1x HDMI, 1x DVI, and 3x DP, while it has two power connectors arranged as 1x 6pin and 1x 8pin.

Meanwhile, the GTX 980, due to its drop down the pecking order, will now be sold at $500.

Nvidia's new GeForce prices follow:

  • Titan X: $1000
  • 980 Ti: $650
  • 980: $500
  • 970: $330
  • 960: $200

Mark Aevermann, a spokesperson for Nvidia, told GameSpot that the GTX 980Ti was built with DirectX 12 features in mind.

"This is, by all rights, our flagship GeForce GTX GPU, built on the GM 200 chip," he said, "and we designed it for a lot of the top-end PC features, such as 4K, VR, and G-Sync. These are the things that this card excels at."

@CaptainKrunch10@archav3n@strangerzzzzz: LOL! The PS4 is playing The Witcher3 at 20fps right now! No joke.

But PC gaming can cheap if you want it to be I was just playing GTAV @ 4K/60Hz with a i5-4690k + GTX 970. That's an $800 PC!

I plan on upgrading here from my old 750 ti, I am currently using a 500w Power supply and plan on going for one around 650. Any suggestions? I am not in with all the power supply brands, as it's always something that slips my mind if I wanna upgrade something (at least until I need it). 600W is recommended on the requirements, so I figured 650 would be safe. And I'll keep check in the power consumption to see if it's safe to over clock, but I just don't know Power supply brands off the top of my head.

@Renegade__angel: I recommend EVGA, Seasonic power supplies.

Don't buy Corsair, because have high failure rate and destroy your motherboard at all cost!

I can afford a 980ti right now, but after the Driver crap nivida pulled with the kepler cards in recent drivers since 347. to the current 352. It has really effects my interesting in their cards. If they are will to gimp kepler cards to make Maxwell look better.. who's to say they wont do it again. When a GTX 960 is faster than a 780 or 780ti in project cars and the witcher 3 something is wrong! Nivida after 80 pages of customers complaining has admitted there is an issue... that they are fixing.

Also I'd like to think gamespot for covering this issue.. Oh wait... they didn't. Sad when gaming sites need news so bad they give us crap coverage of mobile games by kayne west. But something actually worthy of notice is looked over.

Pricing has come out in Australia. Average price is $1049 ranging to $1199. Currency conversion doesn't add up, our economy is the worst ever. The cards should be approx. $850 to $990 max here.

980 @ $500?! time for an upgrade! or maybe not, it's hard to justify such an expensive piece of hardware. I gotta think about it.

@Ripper_TV@TheJamin: Currently 970 SLI myself ;) Moved up from 670 SLI and a 295 before then. SLI of mid range cards seems to yield best FPS per buck most of the time.

@Ripper_TV@TheJamin: I've been SLI for years. You're talking rubbish... Maybe in 2004 but not often these days. Most games you want decent performance in supports it and scales very very well. The only game that comes to mind is wolfenstein.

@saganage: AMd is junk, driver never release. Every time a new game is out it doesnt work right. Than AMD fan girls cry and complain how Nvidia sabotage AMD. Buy AMD and dont cry when shit doesnt work. Just like Witcher 3 right now, hairworks is superior to TressFX. if you see the hair physic on TressFX it look block of clay flapping around. When a game is being Develop, Nvidia sent their Gameworks team out to help optimize the game. AMD is too broke to do that.

AMD has gpu's and cpu's that look good on paper, but are usually poorly optimized. It doesn't help that nvidia and Microsoft work together a lot more than they do with AMD. I have a mobile AMD gpu, and would never buy their stuff again. Poorly optimized, and generates heat faster than a toaster.

@saganage: There's no true answer to that question. You'll have responses from both camps. It's like asking if Xbox One or PS4 is better (you've probably seen all console wars back and forth on these comment sections). Best I could say is that AMD cards usually give you more processing power per dollar spent over Nvidia cards, but because they use more power to run, you'll need a bigger power supply. The money saved is just transferred to the power supply. If you power supply is already strong, then the AMD will give you better bang for your buck.

If you buy games as soon as they are released, Nvidia usually have optimizations and driver updates that come out sooner than AMD.

I ended up with a AMD MSI 270x and have been happy with it. It's a mid range card, but can handle most games at 1080p near max settings.

@lion2447@saganage: Better bang for the buck count even if it work like crap on games?. if you google you'll see that a lot of games features doesnt work on AMD. Every time a new game is out, AMD best excuse is that Nvidia sabotage it. ROFL

So far, this card is proving to score a lot higher than the 980 on synthetic tests, but on actual games it's barely a gain.

So if you're considering nabbing one of these and you already have a 980, I wouldn't worry about it.

@suppaphly42@fvckgabenewell@suppaphly42: Really depends on what res you're playing at. At 1080p the 980 vs 980ti will have maybe a 5% bump, but at 1440p+ it will start to separate itself a bit form the 980.

@suppaphly42@turianshepard@suppaphly42@fvckgabenewell:

You just need a 4K TV with HDMI 2.0 or Displayport (although I have never seen a DP TV, only monitors). If you get an HDMI 1.4 TV, you will max at 30hz on 4K.

Might still need to SLI the 980Ti's to get 60FPS on most new games. 4K is really pushing cards right now.
