Rewatch The Assassin's Creed Valhalla Reveal And Artwork Stream By BossLogic

Acclaimed artist BossLogic spent hours putting together a piece that revealed the new Assassin's Creed Valhalla's Viking-inspired setting.

Ubisoft hosted an all-day stream that ultimately revealed the setting of the next Assassin's Creed game. The setting was shown via a unique piece of artwork produced by BossLogic, an acclaimed artist known for his awesome Street Fighter pieces and, more recently, his collaborations with Marvel and DC. The final reveal was the official title, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, confirming earlier rumors of a Viking setting. It was all streamed in anticipation of a pre-rendered cinematic trailer for the game, as well as a ton of news on the game's new systems and storylines.

The stream appeared to be leaning that direction long before the title was revealed though, as the artwork showed an icy sea, a central figure dressed in furs with and brandishing an axe, and prominent placement for a raven. The first trailer arrived today, April 30, and we learned more about the game's setting, story, protagonists, and how it connects to the rest of the series. There are several different editions of the game and it's coming to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia.

Now Playing: Assassin's Creed Valhalla Teaser - See BossLogic's 8-Hour Artwork In 5 Minutes

The Assassin's Creed franchise underwent a drastic evolution with Assassin's Creed Origins. The game, which was set in ancient Egypt, took on more role-playing design elements. Most notably, it introduced a large number of quests that players could choose to undertake. Its follow up, 2018's Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, built on this with more intricate systems, a vast open-world, and multiple protagonists, among many other additions. Ubisoft then skipped releasing a new mainline entry in 2019.

Earlier reports have speculated that the next game has been internally code-named Assassin's Creed Ragnarok. A domain registration for Assassin's Creed Valhalla suggested that could be the title, which turned out to be the case. A Kotaku report from 2019 also included mention of boats, which are seen in the drawing being streamed today, and The Division 2 even hinted at the setting with a series of posters shortly after its launch.

Given Ubisoft's investment in the technology powering this new iteration of the Assassin's Creed franchise, it's likely this new game will bear some similarities to Origins and Odyssey, with some fresh twists of its own.

Are we going to have 14 pages of microtransactions this time with the game taking 4x as long as a traditional AC game because they've put even more grinding into the design of the game in the hopes that you'll spend money to skip it?

When this is out, remember to compare it to God of War. Just focus on how generic EVERYTHING will feel like in Ass Creed compared to GoW.

@hardwenzen: would be no problem if ac went for serious virtual tourism. loved the old games for that. but as origins and odyssey threw that out for all out fairytale game i fear you might be right.

feels like even skyrim made this game worthless. skyrim has both magic dragons and lot of small towns with ppl in rags sitting by fire and drinking to stay alive

@hardwenzen: That’ll be easy. God of War, bought it day 1 and loved it. Sassy Creed Valhalla, never going to buy it, not even on sale.

Same crap, different coating. A different era won't change the poor writing, mediocre gameplay, a bloated open world and the microtransactions you always get from an Ubisoft game. They haven't released a good AAA game since Blood Dragon.

@cboye18: Their microtransactions have never been forced on me by Ubisoft. Far as agressive as EA does it. It is simply not needed.

@Sindroid: Sure they aren’t forced on you, but Ubi wastes resources creating all of those microtransactions instead of making their games better.

I'm not sure how assassins work in the brutal world of vikings, feudal Japan should have been next. Guess I'll wait for the trailer.

@Daian: you are aware Vikings do a think called raids right? there were MASTERS of stealth to accomplish goals. it is a myth they only did noble fights. so long as they won and got goods they did not care how they did it and often embraced not fighting a land battle to raid nearby towns in silence.
there is a good reason loki the trickster god is one of the main gods after all.

now I will say ubi 100% have ignored stealth recently but lore wise it could work.

When news of the next Battlefield for next gen was revealed yesterday I literally joked we would more than likely hear news soon of an Assassins Creed game and here we are, lol.

I’m sure all those Assassins Creed fans out there are more than happy with this reveal and for some who aren’t as big on the franchise perhaps switching up the location/timeline (much like they did for Origins.) will payoff big in terms of both critical acclaim and sales.

God of War seemed to have huge success switching to the Valhalla backdrop so y’never know. Maybe we might see some Thor action.

😉

I miss old AC games. When the holograms of Those Who Came Before confronted Ezio, and one of them called him Desmond... real hair-standing-up-on-your-neck moments.

Also: they used to have such good ambient music. Now it's silence... and ugh, I HATE that.

But I fully expect this to be another fetch-quest-laden, microtransaction-riddled grindy loot fest. :(

I dunno... something about having levels and damage numbers in an AC game just feels so wrong to me.

@tom_cat_01: The older games (AC1-4) had one of the worse combat system I've played in my 20 years of gaming. The cluncky controls made it a nightmare. It baffles me how this series managed to survive after the first game. So many limitiations within missions and plenty of fetch quests/collectibles made them feel extremely dated and boring as well.

The only memorable thing about these games were the music, Ezio's story and ship battles.

@Daian: Yep. And if your level isn't high enough, you can't damage certain enemies. Likewise, air assassinations etc won't kill if your level isn't high enough.

The games have changed a LOT

@openmind23: Odyssey is the best overall, in my opinion, before it was Black Flag. But Odyssey is truly well done, SO many hours of gameplay and a beautiful world. Origins was also great yea, Origins is a 3rd on my AC list..

Do we know what year it's supposed to be set? If it's closer to 1066 then it's going to be more about the death of the viking age, if it's anywhere between 790 to around about 1035 it's a different story.

But, the real question is, "Are they going to follow the story they set out to make back in 07. Or did they totally say f*** it to the main storyline? And turned AC into 'how many cool time periods we can put assassin's in.'"

Because I want to get back into AC. But, without the big journey, Desmond Miles was on. The series became hollow. And, with all the fantasy and magic they're adding to the new ones. It makes you wonder why didn't they just make another Prince of Persia.

@xenomorphalien: True but it's the main point of the game. Without it, it's just putting an assassin's into random time periods for no reason other then, "It could be cool?".

Plus the main point of AC was to slowly get to a modern era in the first place. Making a Modern Assassin's creed. Which they screwed up, and on top of that, they pretty much made a modern AC game, a.k.a "Watchdogs".

BUT! Even with all of that, I'm still hopeful.
