Ridley Scott Blames Millennials And Their "F***ing Cellphones" For The Last Duel Flop

It's these dang kids and their cellular telephones!

Ridley Scott's The Last Duel is, according to critics and moviegoers alike, a very good movie. The film has an 85% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience score isn't far behind. The movie tanked at the box office, though, and Scott says it's all because of smartphones (via The Hollywood Reporter).

It can't be that it's an ultra-serious period piece coming out during a very serious time in the United States and elsewhere. It definitely can't be the fact that theaters are still recovering from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, up to and including Marvel Studios movies. It's definitely not because Matt Damon has a really weird haircut in the movie.

"I think what it boils down to--what we've got today [are] the audience who were brought up on these f***ing cellphones," Scott told Marc Maron on the latest episode of the comedian's WTF podcast, which debuted earlier today. "The millennian, [who] do not ever want to be taught anything unless you told it on the cellphone."

"This is a broad stroke, but I think we're dealing with it right now with Facebook," the director continued. "This is a misdirection that has happened where it's given the wrong kind of confidence to this latest generation, I think."

The Last Duel, which stars Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck hit theaters last month with a dull thud, pulling down $27 million on an estimated $100 million budget. This isn't the first time the 83-year-old director has railed against Kids These Days. Back in 2017, Scott said that he would rather "keep making smart films" than make superhero movies, pausing only long enough to call his beloved sci-fi film Blade Runner a "comic strip," and to say that "cinema is mainly pretty bad."

Indeed, huge blockbusters have a big draw at theaters, but the COVID-19 pandemic has only served to exacerbate this. It's one thing to go to the theater for a known quantity like a Marvel Studios film or Ghostbusters sequel, but a period piece is going to be the kind of thing people are tempted to wait on--it'll be on streaming before too long, and there just isn't any of the FOMO associated with a standalone movie like this.

The director's next film, House of Gucci, which also features Adam Driver in a starring role alongside Lady Gaga and Jared Leto, hits theaters barely a month after The Last Duel, no November 24.

It's no secret more and more people, and not just millennials, are preferring internet videos and streamed TV series' which have more time to develop their characters and give us a chance to get attached to the story. I find 8 to 10 episode seasons of a show to be better than most movies and are certainly a better value than a 2 hour movie at an overpriced theater (which I can eventually rent).

And, frankly, I'm wary of any movie that is reviewed well. These days a well reviewed movie is just code for it having a politically approved message.

I know I'm sure as hell not going to a movie theater with high prices and maskless nutjobs coughing in my direction.

If this movie is good I'll catch it eventually.

Whatever their excuse — they’ve missed out on his best film since Gladiator. I’ll go see movies like this in theaters until they close the last one. Ridley still understands what cinema is all about.

That's not a very high bar. But I'm glad you enjoyed the movie! 🙂

@vatususreturns: I did enjoy Gladiator, but it isn't a masterpiece IMO. I've always thought it was very overrated, (Braveheart is leagues better).

I think movies like The Godfather 2, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, Goodfellas and Forrest Gump fall into the masterpiece category.

But like I said, that's just my opinion, I'm sure many would disagree with me. 🤷‍♀️

Going to the theatre was already a bad experience for many. The pandemic just made things worse because it taught millions that watching a movie on your 40"- 60" screen at home without having to tell people around you to stfu or people in front of you to sit down or pay $20 for 50 cents worth of flavored water and 5 cents worth of salt and cholesterol soaked popcorn is not so bad. I remember going to the theatre to watch The Sixth Sense. There was nothing scary about the movie but everytime the kid saw dead people, someone in the audience would scream. Then a guy behind me tells his girlfriend or wife the plot to the movie and everyone around him groaned and were pissed, me included. The seats are too close together. The rows are too close together. Sometimes you get stuck beside a person drenched in perfume or cologne who elbows you constantly or who has to get up and pee every ten minutes or a guy behind you who uses the back of your seat as a footrest. The only time I go to the theatre now is when the movie has been out for a month or so and I pick an odd time of day when I know the place will be empty.

@bdrtfm: Your words couldn't speak the truth more, unless they were in the bible.😊 I have NEVER understood why people always say that they want to be out amongst other people. When they are, more often as not, situations become stressful. Personally, I try to be where everyone else "ain't"😎 Hollywood, the entertainment industry and theater operators, always talk about "the movie going experience"😁 They should read your comments. My 7.1 surround sound stereo system, and 55" OLED TV give me all of the "immersive experience" I need to enjoy a film. By the way.. I hate to nit pick, but I think you left out crying babies, cell phone conversations or someone coughing like they have a serious medical condition. Nice rant though, and true story.👍👍😊

@tread33: Seeing threads like this, I just imagine people have really unfortunate movie going cultures around them. Where I live it is VERY rarely ever a problem to be at a movie. People aren't talking, people are;t being disruptive. There was one time when I was a teen 15 years ago, where some loud ass teen girls were running a big part of my experience.

Other than that and a few smaller issues, I don't run into the problems people constantly complain about. I feel really bad that that is your common movie theater experience. Mine are great.

@calinks: Thank you for your kind comments. I would say that there are any number of factors that impact any situation or experience. I stopped going to movie theaters for some of the same reasons that bdrtfm did, and also for the reasons I mentioned. However, geographic areas, local customs, and social standards all come into play. I'm glad that you have a good movie going experience, and hope that you continue to. I am not against the movie theater industry, or its customers. I do think that society is much different from when movie theaters provided the most entertainment outside of peoples homes. Radio, TV, and now movie theaters all have had to deal with changing tastes, and competition. Stay well.😊

For various reasons people just are not going as often to theaters to see movies anymore. It may recover to a degree from what it is today but not to previous levels. I for one hope Scott still has time to make a few more movies.

@jaguar10books: I would like to add.. "Reimaginings" of classic films, having the same "stars" in every movie, and a never ending list of prequals and sequels. Not to mention that many films are rated PG-13 to grab as many eye balls and dollars as possible.

Pandemic, bad marketing, the fact that most people will see it for free in a couple months had NOTHING to do with it. Its all them damn millennial's fault! I dunno if movie makers realize this, but they CAN retire.

Movie not withstanding, he isnt wrong about cellphones, but it isnt any specific group of people. A great deal of people are addicted to cellphones and honestly, its not making life better for them. Plenty of people cannot go a day, or even a week without using a cellphone.

Surprising that the current situation, the competition, the accessibility of the movie and market trends do not come to his mind before blaming people.

It's like when Gearbox blamed players for "not understanding" Colonial Marines.

Cott: your movie is great and scial media is garbage, yes. but you made a movie that is not for the masses. That's it.

I'm a big Scott fan, and somehow I hadn't even heard about this movie. Hey Ridley - whoever did the marketing for this movie failed. Either that, or I'm not really that big of a Ridley Scott fan. Now that I know no one's going to see it, I might check it out. I had to wait until the very last day to see Antlers because the theater was too full every night. I'm not sitting with a bunch of other people if no one's checking vaccination cards. Sorry. I'm sure the theaters have upgraded their air handling systems by now, but I'm not chancing it.

It's like he's forgotten how to make the kind of movie people will bother going to a theater to see. The entire premise of the film is one I would rather rent & watch at home, even before the pandemic. There can't be much that the "movie theater experience" adds to this sort of film. Disclaimer: Not a millennial, I'm GenX.

Never heard about it, not interested in it, and even IF I was interested in it I still wouldn't go to see it. I've already put off seeing movies I was/am interested in seeing (Jungle Cruise, Ghost Busters, Dune) in theaters due to living in a county that had the highest number of infections in California less than 3 months ago. Last thing I want to do is sit in a theater with a bunch of people I do not know nor trust.

@Raistlarn: Yep, I know I would watch more of these movies if I could watch them at home. We live in the era of 8k TVs and insane sound bars; why the hell would we want to go sit in a theater and deal with the crowds? Hell, even before covid, I didn't really like going to the theater all that much.

Is Scott saying that only Millennials go to the movies? I would assume that adults in other demographics would be a larger portion of the movie going public that would be interested in a film like this. I find it interesting that the older directors like Scott and Scorsese. Are so upset with the people that are buying, or not buying, tickets to see their movies. I have to think that people like them in the industry are egotistical windbags that are totally full of themselves. Any rational creative person in entertainment and any of the other arts, is going to understand that not everyone will like their work. Regardless of how "famous" they are. I love Clint Eastwood, but hated his latest movie "Cry Macho".

the irony being that this article is written in a style to sensationalize the couple of statements of a much longer discussion SO THAT IT CAN BE MORE EASILY CONSUMED VIA SMARTPHONE BY MILLENNIALS (and younger).

But I'm sure your goal was to get everyone to listen to the entire podcast of a discussion about how media consumption landscape has gone away from longform towards short, for the sake of commerce, errrrrrrright?

Tell me, who is gamespot appeasing by censoring the word "fucking" in the title? Is this crossing the line into "vulgar, and otherwise objectionable" behavior?

Do you object?

My question is why is it all being put on Millennials? If it's a serious and intellectual period piece, it should capture the attention of a much wider audience, much farther reaching than a single generation. If I had to put the "failure" on any single one thing, my bet would be, Ben Affleck. He ruins everything for me.

Also, I prefer that Ben Affleck, (who apparently has to be in every other movie), not be in a film that I want to see. Further, there's something about Adam Driver being in a movie that totally turns me off. He may be a very talented actor, and I'm sure he's got a big fan base, but I just can't watch the guy.
