RIP Mario? Why The Internet Keeps Talking About Nintendo Killing Mario

An internet joke about Nintendo's strange limited-time sales tactics has turned into a meme about Mario's public execution.

Mario died on March 31, 2021. At least, that's what large swaths of the internet are saying, thanks to a meme that has taken hold around Nintendo's sales practices. Depending on how closely you've been following the Mario 35th Anniversary celebration, you may be confused about why some people are talking about Nintendo killing off one of its most iconic characters. Here's what's going on.

Why is Mario dying?

The short answer is: He isn't. Mario isn't going anywhere, and Nintendo has already announced Mario games that will release in the coming months like Mario Golf: Super Rush. Obviously Nintendo wouldn't actually get rid of one of its most popular and recognizable characters, so we'll be seeing Mario in games for a while to come.

The longer answer is that while Mario probably isn't going anywhere, some of his games definitely are. And that's really where this snowballing joke began picking up momentum.

Nintendo's Limited-Time Plan

In 2020, Nintendo celebrated Mario's 35th anniversary. To mark the event, it offered a series of exclusive merch like a special-edition Game & Watch, in-game events in popular games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and two new game releases: Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Super Mario Bros. 35.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a compilation for Nintendo Switch that includes three of Mario's groundbreaking games: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Super Mario Bros. 35, meanwhile, is a riff on the classic 8-bit Super Mario Bros., making it into a multiplayer battle royale where players try to outlast each other in a series of Mario stages. It's offered as a bonus for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, similar to Tetris 99.

But unlike Tetris 99, Super Mario Bros. 35 came with an expiration date. So did Mario 3D All-Stars, the Game & Watch, and even other pieces of anniversary Mario merch. Nintendo declared that all of these would be pulled from shops on March 31. And the company seems committed, even indicating it intends to pull physical copies of Super Mario 3D All-Stars from shelves and the eShop. There's no word on what the company will do with remaining retail copies that go unsold.

Retailers reportedly still have plenty of stock left, and they're unlikely to pull them from shelves regardless of Nintendo's limited-time plan. But once those copies run out, they won't come back, and Nintendo has pulled the games from its digital store. While Super Mario 3D All-Stars owners can still play their copies, Super Mario 35 is unplayable now that its server support has been shut off.

Why is Nintendo doing this?

Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser says the move is intended to make Mario's anniversary feel special and unique. This isn't a strategy the company will adopt often, he says, but the limited time element helps make Mario's anniversary feel like an event.

"Super Mario 3D All-Stars has sold over 2.6 million in the US alone," Bowser added. "And so clearly, consumers have been able to jump in and enjoy that. And it's not a strategy that we're going to be using widely, but it's one we thought was very unique for the actual anniversary."

There has been speculation and criticism among some fans that the limited-time offer is to push artificial scarcity. There's no indication that's an intentional move on Nintendo's part, but intended or not it seems to be working. GamesIndustry.biz reports that sales of Mario 3D All-Stars have spiked in its final week on the market, according to UK sales charts. Some fans are clearly concerned that they wouldn't get another chance.

Fans have also speculated that Nintendo may bring these games back, in a new context removed from the Mario 35th anniversary. That could mean offering the 3D All-Stars games individually on the eShop, for example, making the compilation package itself the anniversary exclusive.

But the Memes

Regardless of what happens next, the internet dubbed the date as Mario's public execution. Partly to poke fun at Nintendo for the harsh move of killing off games that customers might want, this has been designated as the day Mario dies. And while he isn't really going anywhere, the memes continue.

Mario dies all the time. To a maximum of 99 lives. It depends on how many green mushrooms you gave him or how many hundreds of coins you collected.

This is an April Fools joke right? Who on earth would try to pull a Disney to two of their video games where constant buy patterns throughout console lifecycles keep maturing revenue streams.

Honestly, if Nintendo had someone absolutely BRILLIANT, they would kill Mario. Or at least... A Mario.

We've got Mario, we've got Paper Mario, and we've got Baby Mario. All separate Marios. Give us Ghost Mario. I have no idea what his game would be, what his gimmick would be, how he would be related to other Marios. But I think it would be brilliant.

Maybe he could be an antagonist to a Luigi's Mansion. Maybe he would get some sort of puzzle game revolving around phasing through objects. Maybe he'd be a loveable prankster who liked to scare people in some sort of universe where Toads and Koopas lived in peace, and needed someone to provide them some excitement.

Maybe even all three of those ideas. Have players switch between Luigi, trying to clear a small village of its ghost problem, and Ghost Mario, trying to scare toads into the right locations to allow Luigi more progress, unlocking more buildings, floors, tools, etc. Maybe at some point in the game you'd gain some Combo Mode where Ghost Mario can inhabit Luigi's Body to allow for more Mario-Style movement? Call the game "Super Luigi: Ghost Bros."

Yep, there we go. All we need to make it happen is one Dead Mario.

@zarpie: yea this was the first time i heard of this. they could make an article of every single marginal game related discussion somewhere in social media. would be sad funny if next time i open gamespot i see an article "have you ever thought whether superman or bugs bunny would win?" and its just repeating comicvine discussions and its totally game related

i open this in hopes of actual game news but 9/10 times i just end up clicking the most ridiculous article, post a comment and leave at least for 24 hours. and even e3 is cancelled so when will be the next streak of actual news?

as its today i was at least this to be an entirely serious article about how nintendo is killing mario with plausible sources but this doesnt work even as april fools

@Thanatos2k: Nah. Disney beat them to the punch when they should shelve their movies for 7 years and take them out of circulation in stores. One of the biggest bone headed moves ever. If this isn't an April fools joke, Nintendo, well, already lost their minds already anyway so par for the course for them to do something so stupid.

@Utnayan: Disney was doing that before digital distribution existed though. There is an excuse that continuing to produce physical copies has a cost they didn't want to pay.

With digital distribution there is zero marginal cost of production, and it costs nothing to continue selling these. So there is no excuse.

Memes aren't single pieces of work ("content"), unless they're the originator. They're the whole idea under a thematic topic. Everybody aping a thing, and giving their take on it, is the meme. (Look up memetics.)

Nintendo will probably create a bunch of auction site accounts and sell off their copies pulled from their Tokyo store - or dole them out to eBay partners, who knows. The retailers across the world will continue to sell 3D All-Stars until they run out. I expect auction site prices to go up steadily starting tomorrow!

@Jarrkha: Good news is All Stars was a joke and a horrible port with no redeeming value unless you didn't get the privledge of suffering through gut wrenching camera issues in Sunshine on the cube.

@Utnayan: I didn't play Sunshine on GC, as I never had that console, but I did play large swaths of Galaxy on Wii, and also played Mario 64 to death back in '96. I wouldn't have bought 3D All-Stars even if the ports were of better quality, simply bc I'm basically paying for one old game (rather than 3). If they had thrown-in the outstanding Galaxy 2, maybe. Never got to try that one.

Also wondering if they'll have a 3D All-Stars 2 with Galaxy 2, 3D Land (the 3DS predecessor of the 3D World Wii U gam), and maybe another we haven't thought of yet.

Idk why it would bother anyone. If you were interested in buying it.. then buy it. You had ample time. I love all those games but passed cause Id rather scoop up Galaxy 2 if they release it. Those 3 can stay happily in my memories as Ive played them to death. Still.. why be upset? If you didn't want it, you didn't buy it. End of story.

I'm amazed people care about this limited release, still. Who gives a shit if a company wants to sell a toy for a little bit, then stop making it, or supporting it in digital format. Just let it go.

@HAWK9600: Because it can sink an industry even further into a mindset to drive up prices and artificial demand when other publishers think, "Hey this is a great way to force people to buy our games even if they do not want them right now at a higher price and avoid selling at sale discounts". Don't think all eyes aren't on this just as when people starting paying for "Early access" when all they did was manage to sucker people into paying to play a game being developed or as an Alpha.

@climhazard5: I didn't buy it because it's a crappy port that suffers from the same camera issues as the originals and they didn't put any other effort into it other than run it via emulator on the switch. Sales numbers speak to that as well. This is a feeble attempt at creating artificial demand for a crap port anyway. It's unethical.

@Utnayan: I mean, that works out for you then. It wasnt something you wanted so you didnt buy it, no loss on your end. I can see where some people might want updated controls or visuals but imagine how many fans would be equally upset. You cant touch classic games like that. If you bump the visuals and controls up for Mario 64 its no longer Mario 64 which would cause riots. As for the sales numbers, you said it yourself that its legit just emulating these games. If this was a new game sure those #'s would seem way low. But how much do you think it cost Nintendo to slap three old games together and emulate them on Switch? Id imagine close to nothing, so thats mostly all profit.. which is awesome. Im not arguing just saying that I really dont mind what they did with a special one time collection. If I had wanted it, I wiuld have got it. Plain and simple. Id imagine that collection WILL in fact feel special to those who still have it years and years from now. So maybe it doesnt work for everyone but nothing ever does.
